DEATH OF M. J. DANIELS
Capt. M. J. Daniels of Riverside, formerly representative in Congress of this district, died at his home at Riverside Tuesday morning, after an illness of several months. Captain Daniels was 76 years of age and was a civil war veteran. He was formerly president of the Orange Growers' National bank of Riverside.
Capt. Daniels served in the Minnesota legislature before coming to California and was elected a member of the fifty-eighth congress from the Eighth California district in 1902. He is survived by a widow and three children. Of the latter C. L. Daniels is a Monrovia merchant and the two daughters, Mrs. P. S. Castleman and Mrs. M. J. Twogood, reside in Riverside.
FOR A CITY PARK
It is many years since the question of a public park was first agitated in Anaheim, and the longer the matter of securing a suitable site was delayed the more difficult that problem became because of the phenomenal increase in land values. But the advocates of a park have never relinquished hope of some day securing this much-needed improvement, and it now appears that their hopes will be realized.
The proposition submitted to certain business men of Anaheim Saturday by H. Deutsch places the matter within easy reach. Mr. Deutsch offers
ASSESSMENT ON COMMERCIAL PAPER
LOCAL BANKERS RECEIVE STATEMENT SHOWING AMOUNT COLLECTABLE ON DOCUMENTS
BANK CHECKS ONLY PAPER EXEMPT UNDER THE NEW "WAR TAX" MEASURE
The Anaheim banks received an official statement the first of the week giving a list of the documents that are to be taxed under the new emergency measure. Contrary to the general belief checks are not taxed, but almost every other species of paper passing between the bank and its customer, and between man and his fellow man, must pay tribute to Uncle Sam for the gracious privilege of transacting business among themselves. Here is a list of the assessments published verbatim et literatim et punctuatum as it came from the hands of the powers at Washington:
Bonds, debentures, or certificates of indebtedness of any association, company, or corporation, on each $100, of face value or fraction thereof...
On each original issue of certificates of stock, whether on organization or reorganization, on each $100 of face value or fraction thereof...

Anneheim, and the longer the matter of securing a suitable site was delayed due to more difficult that problem became because of the phenomenal increase in land values. But the advocates of a park have never relinquished hope of some day securing this much-needed improvement, and it now appears that their hopes will be realized.
The proposition submitted to certain business men of Anaeheim Saturday by H. Deutsch places the matter within easy reach. Mr. Deutsch offers a tract, admirably situated for the purpose, at a reasonable figure, and will donate $5000 toward its purchase provided it is used for park purposes. Air. Deutsch is not a resident of Anneheim, but he has been an extensive property holder here for nearly a third of a century and during that period has been vitally interested in the advancement of the city. In an interview Saturday he made the statement that he had always contemplated doing something for Anaeheim, and as he is now 82 years of age he thinks the time has arrived when he should do it while he is young enough to appreciate the improvement.
The site offered is a portion of the Deutzach tract on Lemon street, and being close in is the most suitable vacant ground in the city for the purpose. The market price of the tract is $16,000, but it will cost the city only $11,000.
CHICKEN THIEVES
Chicken thieves are again in evidence, a number of fowls having been stolen Tuesday night from the barn yards of Mr. Yeoman at West Anaeheim. Officer Germann was called to make an investigation yesterday morning and found eight heads which had been wrung from the bodies of the stolen fowls lying near the barnyard. He saw the tracks of the thief in the wet ground plainly. The miscreant made his way through an adjoining orange grove, his shoes slaking deeply in the mud, and later made off to the road at the south of the ranch where his rig had been hitched. The man drove off toward Garden Grove.
Germann states chicken thieves use a chloroform spray when raiding hen roosts, he having found one of the sprays recently after thieves had made a raid on a hen roost. The drug does away with an unnecessary noise on the part of the fowls, putting them to sleep immediately.

PLACENTIA GROWERS
The Placentia Orange Growers' association held its annual banquet on Monday at the packing house, electing the following officers and directors: A. Pierotti, president; L. P. Drake, vice-president; Wm. Berkinstock, treasurer; H. W. Schultz, S. W. McCulloch, W. L. Hale, E. D. Lang, Abe Pritchard was elected secretary and manager. Harry Maxwell will continue in charge of the books. Mr. Pierotti as president succeeds Major Klokke, who died the day before the meeting was held.
So far as the output is concerned this has been the most successful year of the association which was formed nearly 20 years ago. Oranges from that section recently sold in New York at $6 and $6.80 a box, the highest price received this year for any California oranges. A total of 313,621 boxes, or 784 cars of 440 boxes each were shipped by this association for the season ending November 15.
USE EMERY GAS
Housewives in Anaheim Fullerton, Santa Ana and Orange are now using some of the natural gas flowing from the great Standard Oil company's well on the Emory lease. For a year gas from that well has all been burned near the exit merely to get rid of it. At night the great blaze has proven to be a picturesque feature of a drive anywhere within miles of the place.
Some of the gas-that has been going to waste is now going to be used for cooking.
The Southern Counties Gas company recently contracted with the Standard Oil company for the gas, and Corwin Butterworth, county manager of the gas company completed six miles of pipeline from the well to a point on the main between Anaheim and Fullerton Monday.
The gas company will be unable to use anywhere near the output of the great well and for a long time some of it will have to be burned at the well to get rid of it.

of the year the concrete work was practically completed, as well as the greater portion of the back fill. On July 1, 1913, the construction of rebounds in accordance with plans prepared by a board appointed for the purpose and approved by the Secretary of War was undertaken, and they were completed, as well as the clearing necessary in connection with them."
The continued earth slides that checked the progress of the canal builders is described at length. The total amount of material removed in the dry from Culebra cut, the report states, from the beginning of American operations to June 16, 1914, aggregated 110,261,883 cubic yards, at a division cost of $0.1066 per cubic yard. Of this amount 25,206,100 cubic yard were removed because of slides, or 22.86 per cent.
STATE FORESTER
COMPLIMENTS COUNTY
Was the First In the State to Establish County Nursery
J. D. Schoeller of Sacramento, assistant state forester, was in this section the first of the week inspecting forest matters in general and making especial inquiry into the brush fire that burned over about 14,000 acres of mountainous territory between the Santiago and Santa Ana canyons.
Monday afternoon Schoeller went to the foothills to get some photographs of the denuded territory. These will be used in his report. He met Forest Ranger J. B. Stephenson of El Toro, who had charge of fire-fighters, and was given a detailed account of the damage done. Stephenson stated that about 1050 acres of private lands inside the federal forest lines had been burned over and 655 acres of forest land.
Schoeller was shown the Orange County Board of Forestry nursery, in which trees are being raised for roadside planting. He was greatly interested in the place, and declared that it

A wildcat measuring about three feet in length and weighing 50 pounds was killed last week in the Trauco canyon by H. Leach employed by the Union Oil company while nee and A. J. Gay were out hunting. The animal is said to have been hiding in a tree and Leach was able to creep within a few feet of it before killing it.
"Made to order," is what the ranchers of Orange county say of Monday night's rain. Barley lands are wonderfully benefited, while stock men are assured of ample food for cattle in the pastures and hills. At Santa Ana, up to 7 o'clock, 55 inches had fallen, making a total for the season of 3.75 inches. At Irvine, the guage registered .73 inches, making 2.43 inches for the season. At Garden Grove .67 inches was recorded, a season's total of 5.5. At Orange .65 inches fell, bringing up the total to 3.27 inches. Anaheim got .85.
A labor lien has just been filed against the ranch owned by Prof. Arthur Wells Smith, formerly of Whitler. The action was brought by Attorneys Forgy & Scarborough of Stanta Ana in behalf of B.F. Moore of Yorba Linda. The complaint alleges that Moore's labor account on the ranch has been running long over a year and Smith has failed to make a satisfactory arrangement for the payment of it. It has already developed that the title to the property was for several months not in Prof Smith's name. It is expected the case will come to trial in the near future.
Lack of war tax stamps disrupted business at the County Recorder's office and at the title companies in Santa Ana Tuesday. With the Federal law in effect requiring internal revenue stickers upon most of the papers handled by the Recorder and title companies, it was found that not a single stamp was to be had in the city. Orange County Title Company ordered $200 worth of stamps over a week ago, but they did not arrive. The banks that expect to carry them failed to get a supply. Consequently, documents that otherwise would have gone to the Recorder's office were held back. County Recorder Backs received but nine papers for recording. They were all executed and delivered before the law went into effect.
A county Sunday school rally or meeting will be held at the United Presbyterian church, Santa Ana, on Sunday, December 6, at 3:00 p.m. R.
