MUST PROTECT CALIFORNIA WILD LIFE
NEW YORK AUTHOR DECLARES MARKET MEN TRYING TO HOODWINK THE VOTERS
SLAUGHTER AND SALE OF GAME FOR PROFIT MEANS ELIMINATION OF ANIMALS AND BIRDS
William T. Hornaday, author of "Our Vanishing Wild Life," and no one of the trustees of the Wild Life Protection Association, writes a letter to the people of California relative to the referendum vote this fall on the Flint-Carey law, in which he says.
To the people of California:
A great conflict is now raging in your state, over the sensible preservation or the brutal annihilation of the game of California. The alien-born mis-named "People's Game Protective association" is urging you to write "no" on your ballots next November opposite the referendum clause to decide the fate of the ex-lating law prohibiting the sale of game.
The forces of destruction have money profits at stake, and they are making a hard fight to convince you that "the poor workingman" should be given a royal chance to buy ducks at vice per pair, and other game at proportionate prices. The game-dealers and market gunners are putting forth plenty of money and effort—to hoodwink the people of California at the polls.
Now men and women of California, whatever you do, don't let that alien association, headed by Corrion, Slischo, Channinl, and Campodonico, "pull the woo" over your eyes in this matter. Don't be hoodwinked by the game-destroying gang that cares only for "da trees that there seemed to be more of a crop than there really was. Could we count the nuts we would find less than 50 per cent, but their size brings the tonnage to 50 per cent.
The estimates of other counties which were so high at first have all been dropped to a lower level, making the crop in the state 70 to 75 per cent. Remember that Orange county is the leader in walnut production. According to the latest monthly bulletin of the State Horticultural Commissioner, the walnut crop of the state is furnished in about this proportion: Orange county, 39 per cent; Los Angeles county, 31 per cent; Ventura county, 17 per cent; Santa Barbara county, 11 per cent. It will at once be seen that Orange and Los Angeles counties are the determining factors in a crop estimate. All the other counties in the state reporting on walnuts furnish the remaining 2 per cent.
It became known just before the price was quoted by the associations that the French embargo on walnuts had been raised. While the knowledge of this had no doubt an influence on the quotations, the aim of the delegates was no doubt not to raise the price to a prohibitive figure, because it is beat that the crop should move off quickly without a hitch, and returns should reach the growers as fast as possible. As far as can be seen now the French crop, said to be quite large, will not reach this country for a good long time. The Italian crop suffered from drought, and nuts are small. They are quoted as low as 11.4 cents per pound, duty paid. While the crop is said to be large, yet the output is small, because the Sorrento district is quite small.

Now men and women of California, whatever you do, don't let that alien association, headed by Corrilea, Slisco, Channini, and Campodonico, "pull the woo" over your eyes in this matter. Don't be hoodwinked by the game-deestroying gang that cares only for "daemon."
If you feel that you must have your game slaughtered for cash and sold to priffs (and exterminated), do it with your eyes open, and not because you have been fooled by a lot of men whose names you can't pronounce. You, The People-at-Large of California may have a legal (but not a moral) right to exterminate your game by a majority vote, if you choose to do it, but in any event don't give John F. Corrilea and his fellow game-dealers a chance to say that they have fooled the people of California in this matter.
Here is one fact that I want you to know, and remember, no matter which way you vote:
There is nothing as deadly to the game of any state or nation as its slaughter and sale for money profits; and the slaughter of game for sale always leads quickly and directly to extermination.
Don't deceive yourselves; and don't let Corrilea deceive you on that point! The statement I have given you is so well founded, and so well recognized throughout America, that it is no longer open to argument. Why should anyone waste time in proving it again, when the records are so overwhelming? Just as sure as you vote "No," and repeal the excellent and very necessary Flint-Carey law, just that purely will the game of California, and also the migratory game of Oregon and Washington, be swept away for game-dealers' profits, and exterminated before your eyes.
You may have the legal right to exterminate your own share of the game of California; but you have no right, either legal or moral, to rob your children of their inheritance in that stock of game! The people of this generation did not give to California the game of the state, and therefore that game is not theirs to exterminate if they chose. Market-shooting and the sale of migratory game in California is not a square deal to the people of Oregon, Washington and Alaska, where the sale of game is prohibited by law! The ethics of the situation are inexorable. The voters of California have no moral right to vote for extermination!
Regarding this contest, I have no doubt whatever as to the intentions of the people of California, provided the thinking men and women can be reached. The danger lies in lack of knowledge, inattention, or a misunderstanding that votes "No" when

BACK TO THE SMOKEHOUSE
Farmers in all parts of the country are watching with interest an experiment which is being made in Brooks county, Georgia. The Georgia farmers objected to the commercial system under which they were receiving but seven and eight cents a pound for the pork which they raised, while they saw the ham and bacon of commerce retailing in their own markets for 25 cent a pound. They resolved to reestablish the ante-bellum smokhouses on their farms and immediately carried the resolution into off-have commenced marketing their products in the finished form. They ind that the profits which they make from curing their own meats are relatively larger, considering the time and expense involved, than those which they were receiving from marketing hogs on the hoof. The remarkable thing about this profitable experiment is that it has not been worked out in any of the grain centers or near any of the country's great markets, but in a remote county in the extreme southern part of Georgia, in a "one crop" section and that crop cotton.
THE MOONLIGHT SCHOOL MOVEMENT
The moonlight school movement is sweeping in the state of Kentucky. These country and mountain night schools are being established all over the state. It is not the children who attend the "moonlight schools" but the grown-ups—these who in the last census report were classed as illiterate. In some of the schools three generations are represented in one class. Kentucky is determined to stamp out this illiteracy before the next census is taken. The following dispatch is typical: "The first moonlight school to be organized."

Hartford, who is trustee and an old school teacher, assisted by Miss Orpha Hobgood, the day teacher at Hawkins. There are thirty-five enrolled, including some of the best citizens of the community. Great interest is manifested and before a great while it is expected to have every man and woman in the district enrolled who is in need of the instruction these schools contemplate."
ITS ACHIEVEMENTS
The democrats propose to issue a campaign hand-book cliting alleged achievements of the party. In the estimation of the people, there are four achievements to be credited—or perhaps charged is the better word—to the party in power. The first "achievement" is the Underwood tariff law. This law has closed thousands of factories, reduced hours in others, set at idleness more than a million men and brought stagnation to the business world. It doesn't pretend to be a protective measure. More than that, president Wilson, in his message of September 4, virtually confesses to Congress that the Underwood law has failed of its primary purpose of raising revenue for the government at a time when the country was at absolute peace.
The second "achievement" is the banking and currency law. It has been on the statute books since December, 1913, but it is not yet in operation. There are three possible reasons for this. There is either something wrong with the law, or there is something wrong with those...

COMMENDS HIGHWAY COMMISSIONERS FOR EXCELLENT WORK IN SURFACING ROAD IN COUNTY
Resolutions in opposition to the proposed eight-hour law were passed by the Associated Chambers of Commerce at Orange Thursday night. It also adopted a resolution of thanks to the State Highway Commission for surfacing the highway from Anaheim to Santa Ana with asphalt and asked that the same surfacing be used on the road from Anaheim north to the Los Angeles county line. Furthermore, it went on record as favoring Riverside for the state experiment station in preference to San Fernando.
There was some interesting discussion on good roads. A. A. Mills started it by saying that in his opinion the county is covering its concrete base too soon, that the base should be left open to traffic for several months so that weak spots would develop.
Highway Commissioner R. J. McFadden stated that any concrete will wear unless protected, and it would be a mistake to leave the best of concrete open to traffic beyond a short period. While developing the weak spots a large amount of damage would be done the whole road.
"We expect weak spots," said he. "They cannot be avoided. They will develop and can be repaired after the surfacing is laid."
Highway Engineer S. H. Finley said that concrete is not built for taking the traffic.

IN AND ABOUT COUNTY
Salt Lake Officials Here.
Further talk of the possibility that the Salt Lake will build a road from Los Angeles to San Diego through Orange county was started by the visit of a party of Union Pacific and Salt Lake officials to this section. They came in the private car of J. Garrett of Omaha, general freight agent of the Union Pacific.
With Garrett are H. O. Wilson, general western agent of the Union Pacific; T. A. Siuan, general freight agent of the Salt Lake, and F. H. Auams, general western agent of the Salt Lake, the last four named of Los Angeles men in company with J. J. Travis, agent of the Salt Lake, and E.
In normal times of peace and prosperity the amount sent abroad each year by American workers of foreign birth or relationship is estimated at between $75,000,000 and $150,000,000. These huge sums go away from us in postal and express orders, in checks and drafts issued by American banks. No public record of them is kept. They do not enter into our trade statistics. They are a drain upon our money metal supply of which no notice is taken when figuring up our real or apparent trade balances. They drain our gold away from us just as do our payments to foreign ships for transportation of freight and passengers, and the vast sums spent abroad by American tourists. We know what we import in the way of merchandise or specie, but we do not anywhere near know what our losses of American gold amount to through the channels mentioned.
Because of the general impoverishment created by the war, millions of Europeans will need help that never needed it before. They will look to the United States for the great bulk of this help. The amount of gold thus leaving this country as loans or gifts to poverty stricken Europeans, sent by prosperous American, wage earners and business men alike, is impossible to accurately estimate. That it will run far beyond the $75,000,000 or $150,000,000 previously sent abroad every year is morally certain. It is likely to run for a time far up into the hundreds of millions.
WOMEN PARTICIPATE
A special program is being prepared for the women's department of the State Fruit Growers' Convention, which will hold its 45th convention in Los Angeles November 9th to 14th. Miss Clark of the State University is securing many talented speakers, and special meetings will be held in most attractive rooms every afternoon. In the evening general sessions addresses will be made by some of the ladies attending the Women's Department. These addresses will be by women from Sonoma, Placer, Yolo, Santa Barbara, Ventura, San Diego counties and other sections of the state.
Pleasant headquarters have been secured at one of the best hotels in Los Angeles and in addition to the good things which the convention itself will bring forth, the social side will be its most pleasant feature. The Los Angeles committee is planning for many attractive things which are not down on the program.

Los Angeles committee is planning for many attractive things which are not down on the program.
TELEPHONE A NATURAL MONOPOLY
In deciding against the Peirce City Farmers' Mutual Telephone Company, which sought to compel he Missouri and Kansas or Bell company to make local connections with it, the Missouri public service commission takes a position which seems to be growing in popularity. Commissioner Wightman in announcing the decision for the commission said: "Experience has demonstrated that a local telephone exchange is a natural monopoly, and that as a general principle the more complete the monopoly the more cheaply and more conveniently the service can be rendered for the public and the less interference with or disfigurement of public streets and highways thereby. In the very nature of the business every multiplication of such utility corporation in a local exchange area is a proportionate division of the service rendered. Therefore the commission holds that competition in local telephone service is to be avoided wherever possible to do so."
The idea of a monopoly is repugnant to the world. The verdict, "A private monopoly is indefensible," has become an adage. Yet common experience will incline to the view of the commission in its general application, in spite of the loss that it may mean to the Peirce City investors in the mutual enterprise. Blessings have been invoked on the man who causes two blades of grass to sprout where he did before, but no benedictions have been given the man who causes two telephone systems to sprout in one community. It means doubling the expense or impairing the service.
W. J. Allen was arrested by Policeman German Thursday for peddling and arraigned before the court Friday he plead not guilty and demanded a jury trial. Judge Howard fixed his case for Saturday, but after getting behind the bars again, Allen changed his mind and declared he would plead guilty.
CAN'T MIX DRINKS
Wine and water cannot be mixed, legally. Secretary of Agriculture Houston has just announced a decision which prohibits the use of the word "wine" on products made by the addition of water to the juice, pomace or pulp of grapes. Wine must have an old fashioned "kick" in it, under the secretary's new ruling.
Under former decisions certain classes of wines manufactured were allowed to add water and sugar to the pomace or pulp of grapes from which the juice had been partially pressed, and then, after allowing the mixture to ferment, to call the mixture "pomace wine." This is no longer permissible unless the manufacturers want their product "imitation wine."
The new decision, however, permits correction of natural defects in grape musts and wine due to climatic or seasonal conditions by certain additions.
Used Purse for Weapon.
City Marshal Jernigan was called on Saturday to stop hostilities between Western Union employees and the Salt Lake office force at Santa Ana. The offices are in the same room. As City Marshal Jernigan gets the story, relations between the two offices have not been overly pleasant for some time. Saturday trouble culminated when Mrs. Clyde Springer, wife of the operator, became angered at something said by E. H. Talley, a Salt Lake clerk. Mrs. Springer had a leather money bag in her hand, and in it was a quantity of silver. This bag was swung down on Talley's head with a zest that brought a quantity of blood. Talley had to have his wound attended to by ap physician.
In all probability San Juan Capistrano will be represented in the Los Angeles-Phoenix road race of this year. George Marshall, who conducts a garage and supply house at the mission town, has left in his Mercer racing car to go over the course. He is accompanied by Wm. La Devezo of Anaheim, known as "Big Bill" and regarded as a very capable mechanic. The two said before their departure that it is their intention to go over the route carefully, spending at least a week to ascertain if their car has enough clearance for the high centers and boulders they understand mark the road through the mountains. Marshall is an experienced driver.
Walnuts Good Quality.
The walnuts now being received by the packing house of the Placentia-Fullerton association are of excellent quality. From 97 to 98 per cent are shown by test to be No.1 nuts. The balance are No.2's, the culls being so small in number as to be hardly worth mentioning. Several lots of walnuts have also been received at the Benchley Fruit company's packing house. They are being bleached and the first shipment of the season from this house will be made next week. The average walnut output from the Placentia-Fullerton district is about 120 cars and it is estimated that the present crop will be about 75 per cent normal in quantity.
Demurrer Sustained.
The demurrers to the complaint in all the cases against A. Otis Birch, in what are known as the Birch oil cases, have been sustained by the court, and the plaintiffs have been given twenty days' time in which to amend the complaints in each and every case. There are thirteen cases in which the demurrers were entered, and they all take the same course. The first demur was on the grounds that there were not sufficient facts contained in the complaints to justify a cause of action. There were other things demurred against, but this was the principal one. The plaintiffs are: J.R.Porter, J.W.Blee, H.C.Dawes, Della F.Bishop, J.C.Travis, J.D. Thomas, W.A.Huff, N.T.Edwards,

Old Soldier Assaulted.
James Mason, en route from Los Angeles in a box car Thursday night,
was badly injured by two Mexicans who crawled into the car while the freight train was stopping at Hobart Junction. They evidently believed the old man, whom they found in the car, had money. While the train was running between Rivera and Northam, according to the old man's account, one of the Mexicans attacked him with a knife after demanding that he give up his cash. He had only 40 cents, he says, and this amount did not seem to satisfy the bandits. He is a veteran of the Civil War, and thinks they suspected him of having pension money, but says that he receives no pension. His assailants made a gash in his throat from a point directly under one chin to his ear, and another cut a little above the first. They took all the change he had bid and dumped from
