THURSDAY, JULY 23 FARMERS FIGHT DRASTIC EIGHT HOUR LAW SOCIALIST MENACE TO CALIFORNIA'S PROSPERITY WILL BE VIGOROUSLY OPPOSED FRUIT GROWERS FORM ASSOCIATION AND BATTLE AGAINST PROPOSED FREAK MEASURE Agriculturalists from various parts of Southern California met at Los Angeles on Wednesday and organized the Farmers' and Fruit Growers' Federation to carry on a vigorous educational campaign to insure the defeat of the "Universal 8-hour Law" placed on the ballot for the November election by initiative petitions of the socialist party. The farmers and fruit growers present unanimously declared that, inasmuch as the law as submitted contains absolutely no exemptions, with no allowance for sun, wind, rain, or other uncontrollable conditions, of nature affecting the harvesting and marketing of crops, it would prove a disastrous blow to all agricultural interests and to the general prosperity and welfare of the state. F. Q. Story, president of the California Fruit Growers' Exchange, was unanimously elected president of the new organization; H. B. Chage of Riverside and E. G. Dezell were chosen vice-presidents; F. O. Sallschlaeger was made secretary-treasurer. The executive committee includes also E. S. Moulton and W. G. Fraser of Riverside, C. C. Teague of Santa Paula, E. M. IN AND ABOUT COUNTY Obstreperous Gunman Frank Hunt, foreman on the A. W. McPherson ranch, has been arrested at La Habra for alleged threatening to shoot M. J. Pickering, who put in a pipe line on his place for irrigation purposes. It also carries water to the McPherson ranch, and he asked McPherson to help pay for it, giving him two weeks' time, which McPherson promised to do. At the end of a month, not having received any money from McPherson, Pickering refused to let Hunt have any water through the line. This made Hunt angry, so he went to Mr. Pickering's house with a revolver, it is alleged: Pickering was not at home at the time, so he started out to show Mrs. Pickering, she asserts, what he would do to her husband when he saw him, flourishing the revolver in her face, which caused her to faint. This somewhat sobered him, and he went home. Pickering, on returning home, lost no time in swearing out a complaint for Mr. Hunt's arrest. Must Pungle Up For Road When the bill on the Whittler road north of Fullerton was cut down to a 5 per cent grade for the state highway, the cost of making the extra cut had to be guaranteed by local men as the state road commission refused to make the grade less than 6 per cent. With the endorsement of the associated chambers and acting for that body, E. E. Balcom and W. T. Brown assumed the financial obligation necessary, becoming personally responsible for the amount, about $500. The county board of supervisors later agreed to pay one-half this sum. Notice has been received from the state commission that the work is done and payment is due. This demand was presented by Mr. Brown for consideration by the associated chambers at the special meeting held in Santa Ana Wednesday. plosion of natural morning at 2 o'clock on the well, was knocked over explosion. M. Lyon of Redlands, W. E. Sprott of Porterville, C. C. Chapman of Fullerton, and G. Harold Powell of Los Angeles, Pitt P. Hand of Los Angeles was made campaign manager in charge of the work against the proposed harmful legislation. The federation proposes before the November election to show the public exactly what the sweeping 8-hour law would mean to all tillers of the soil; that it would increase the cost of production from 20 to 30 per cent and raise the cost of living to every consumer. The 8-hour law as submitted in proposition No. 3 on the November ballot, is the most inflexible and drastic statute on the subject ever drawn. It was almost unanimously voted down by the last legislature as too sweeping and dangerous. All similar laws restricting hours of labor for males, such as that in New York, contain exceptions to provide for necessities of farming. The "Women's 8-hour Law" recently adopted for California makes exemptions of household helpers, nurses, and others to provide for similar necessities. The socialists' "universal" law now proposed embraces all wage-workers, men and women, even including the women exempt from the existing law. The farmers contend that, besides being rulnous and impracticable, the law submitted is flagrantly discriminatory in that it provides for "a fine of $500 and a jail sentence of 90 days" for any employer permitting "more than eight hours" work in one day or more than 48 hours in one week." It imposes no obligation whatever upon the employee. Secretary Wallschlaeger yesterday stated that the law would mean an increase in production cost of 25 per cent to California growers of oranges and lemons, who already are under a handicap in competition with Florida, Porto Rico and Europe, where production cost is less than it is in California even now. Substrantial Dividend The Amalgamated Oil Company has just declared its usual monthly dividend of $1.50 a share, payable July 24. The total amount to be distributed is $62,000. The stock of the company has been strong of late despite a gradually descending scale of prices generally and the latest quotations are $81 bid with offers at $83. At present rate of dividends the percentage of income is 22 per cent on $81 per share or 18 per cent on par. Inasmuch as there is promise of an even larger income as a result of new wells being drilled the advance in price is said to be warranted. Two Years For Moreno "Rat poison would kill you instantly; whiskey would probably take 20 years, but the result would be the same in the end." This was part of the lecture delivered by Judge West to Guillermo Moreno, convicted in the superior court of attempting to kill his wife by stabbing her with a knife, and when that weapon broke, using a pair of shears. Moreno was drunk at the time. The jury found him guilty of assault with a deadly weapon, and the judge congratulated him on his luck in escaping the more serious charge of assault with intent to commit murder. Judge West sentenced Moreno to two years in San Quentin, the maximum penalty in that case. Examination Postponed Frant C. Kent, accused of murder, when I. O. Wilson died, it is allaged as the result of being struck a blow on the head with a garden rake, in the hands of Kent, was in court Thursday, pursuant to the date given at the chambers and acting for that body, E. E. Balcom and W. T. Brown assumed the financial obligation necessary, becoming personally responsible for the amount, about $500. The county board of supervisors later agreed to pay one-half this sum. Notice has been received from the state commission that the work is done and payment is due. This demand was presented by Mr. Brown for consideration by the associated chambers at the special meeting held in Santa Ana Wednesday night, but was postponed to the regular meeting of July 29, to be held at Buena Park. It is understood that an effort will be made to have the whole amount paid from the county treasury, but falling in this the associated chambers will raise the sum necessary. Total work in one day or more than 48 hours in one week." It imposes no obligation whatever upon the employee. Secretary Wallschlaeger yesterday stated that the law would mean an increase in production cost of 25 percent to California growers of oranges and lemons, who already are under a handicap in competition with Florida, Porto Rico and Europe, where production cost is less than it is in California even now. The farmers urge that the prohibitive law would tend to drive California agriculture into the hands of Hindoos, Japanese and Chinese, who would operate leased lands through "partnerships." Also that it would bring here many undesirable citizens in search of the "easy life" and a "labor paradise." The Farmers' and Fruit Growers' Federation will have headquarters at 740 Consolidated Realty Building, Los Angeles, where weekly meetings will be held. Agriculturalists throughout Northern and Central California have formed organizations to oppose the law and similar movements are under way in every county of Southern California. Honey Crop Short Production of honey in Orange county this season will be very light. This is owing to the fact that a large majority of the bee men have taken their apiaries out of the county and that many of the ranches formerly devoted to honey raising have been put to other uses: What few bees remain in this locality have not done well this spring owing to the cloudy weather which prevailed up until two months ago, although the bees have been working hard during the past two weeks. Fewer bees in the county as well as unfavorable weather conditions will combine to limit this year's crop to about 50 per cent of a normal one. Examination Postponed Frant C. Kent, accused of murder, when I. O. Wilson died, it is allied as the result of being struck a blow on the head with a garden rake, in the hands of Kent, was in court Thursday, pursuant to the date given at the time it was adjourned last Friday afternoon. Horace C. Head, one of Kent's counsel, was in court, and reported that Earl Rogers, associate counsel, was unable to be present, and asked for a continuance. Judge Cox took the matter up with the district attorney's office and found that the officers representing the people would make no objection, and then the judge put the case over for one week, until July 23. The examination will probably take two more full days, the officers said. Deputy Sheriff Fined L. C. Edwards, a Fullerton deputy sheriff, was halted by one of the motor cops, and asked to appear before Judge Cox at Santa Ana on the charge of not having the rear light of his auto burning. Mr. Edwards was indignant to think that an officer of the law should be taken into custody for such a thing as that, and made many excuses as to why his light was not burning. The justice told him that there was nothing for him to do but to enforce the law, and fined Edwards $5 for the offense. The fine was paid. Injured by Explosion William Hagerston and Joseph Rupp, employees on rig No. 13 of the Graham-Loftus Oil Company's lease, were severely injured as the result of an ex- ANAHEIM GAZETTE plosion of natural gas Wednesday morning at 2 o'clock. Rupp, the driller on the well, was severely burned. He was knocked over and stunned by the explosion. Although his burns are extremely painful he is in no immediate danger. Hagerston, a derrick man, was 90 feet up on the derrick when the gas exploded. He was forced to slide down a wire cable, his hands being badly lacerated in the descent. The well was down to a level of 1300 feet. At this depth a gas pocket was struck and this was set afire by a light on the derrick. It is estimated that it will cost $2000 to rebuild the derrick and otherwise repair the rigging. Wanted to Be Shot After expressing the hope that Magolchi Nigo, whom he stabbed perhaps fatally at East Highland, would die, at the same time calling down numberless Oriental curses upon the head of his countryman, and after making a full confession of the stabbing to the local police, M. Nakato, a Japanese, picked up in the local yards of the Southern Pacific railway by Ontario officers, requested that he be taken out and shot. Nakato at first denied that he was the man wanted, but when sweated by the officers, made full confession. He declared that Nigo, his victim, whom he says has been in this country 20 years, is no good, and declares that he called him, Nakato, vile names, provoking the stabbing. The department therefore advocates the use of various methods to introduce the required humus into the soil. Experts of the forest service state that the soils of the whole country, and particularly of the south, have lost and are losing immense amounts of this source of soil fertility through fires which apparently do little immediate damage but rob the soil of accumulations of humus. In many parts of the southeast, land is being cleared for farming, and where such forest land has not been burned there is a large percentage of vegetable matter which provides considerable fertility and a good texture. Moreover, this soil has a greater capacity to absorb and retain moisture, and thus is less likely to be washed and gulled under heavy rains. For these reasons, leaving out of account the damage to standing timber, the department's authorities are agreed that fireae should be rigidly kept out of woodlands. Lemon St., Anaheim, Cal., says: "Years ago my back and kidneys began to trouble me. When on my feet, I suffered worse. If I overworked, the suffering was increased. A cold always made me bad, too. I felt tired and lame and was much run down when I began using Doan's Kidney Pills. All the pains and aches yielded to this remedy and I felt like a different person. Since then, I have never been without a supply of Doan's Kidney Pills several years ago and am glad to confirm that statement. Another in our home has since used Doan's Kidney Pills and has had good results." Price 50c, at all dealers. Don't simply ask for a kidney remedy—get Doan's Kidney Pills—the same that Mrs. Backs had.
