A little boy was shooting firecrackers on the Fourth on North Philadelphia street. He picked it up and blowed in the business end to start the fireworks. It started. The little boy was knocked over backward but escaped injury.
V. U. Simpson was at Santa Ana on Monday bidding in the Horace Hand 10-acre orchard east of town. He took over the property at $3,500 on a mortgage contract to deliver deed to him in default of payment of money loaned by him on the property.
Marshal Kellenberger had his hand burned on the 4th of July by picking up a firecracker which failed to explode. He was showing his little boy how to celebrate the Fourth. The cracker exploded in his hand, burning it severely, but Johnny is on the job again smiling as ever.
City Clerk Merritt and his daughter, Miss Eva Merritt, spent the Fourth at Fillmore, Ventura county, with Bowman Merritt and family. Bowman has a new two-weeks old baby presented to him by his wife, which is just the picture of his grandpa. Bowman was also honored by election as city trustee of Fillmore at a recent election when the town was incorporated.
Ulric Sammy Adams was 11 years old on the 4th of July and he celebrated his birthday by firing off 11 packs of firecrackers, exercising his vocal cords 11 times, and eating 11 plates of ice cream. Ulric's initials stand for United States of America, and he is a
J. J. Dwyer and wife, who returned last week from an extended tour of the south and east, report an enjoyable trip but are extremely glad to get back to Anaheim. They purchased an auto and traveled by easy stages, Florida being one of the states visited. Mr. Dwyer says that state cannot compare with Southern California as a citrus producing country.
Charley Carroll, Charley Mann, Earl Steadman and N. B. Tedford left Friday evening for Trabuco Canyon, but on discovering that it would be a lonely place in which to celebrate the Fourth, returned the next morning. After a short stop in Anaheim they motored to the beach and spent the day mingling with the gay throngs on the sands.
That Garden Grove is growing is shown by the increase of postal receipts. Postmaster F. C. Thompson's receipts for June, 1914, were $128.43, an increase of $74.04, or 58 per cent over June, 1913. The quarter ending June 30, 1914, showed receipts of $596.70, an increase of 45 per cent over the corresponding quarter of 1913.
"Gee I didn't believe there were so many autos in all the world," remarked a bystander after watching for half an hour on Sunday evening the evolutions of the numerous machines around the signpost at the corner of Center and Los Angeles streets. The rush began about 4 o'clock and lasted until 9. Most of the autos came from the north and east all centless.

Ulric Sammy Adams was 11 years old on the 4th of July and he celebrated his birthday by firing off 11 packs of firecrackers, exercising his vocal cords 11 times, and eating 11 plates of ice cream. Ulric's initials stand for United States of America, and he is a pretty good little kid, although he is not half as pretty as his sister, Elleen, who has a dandy new bathing suit. Hurray for Ulric!
F. R. Legourge has disposed of his east side 10-acre ranch at $11,000. He purchased the tract eight years ago at $100 per acre. He has purchased the property at the corner of Emily and Adele streets, formerly occupied by Richard Melrose and family, and has cut the building in two, making two houses, one of five rooms and the other of six. The east part of the building has been moved to face the Adele street, and both are neat and comfortable structures. Mr. Lagourge and family spent the Fourth at Newport Beach.
Without appraising his friends of his intention Alfred Heyling left home last week and on Thursday he was joined in wedlock to Miss Joanne Sogelhorse of Olinda at St. Vibiana's cathedral, Los Angeles. Nobody suspected him of having intentions in this direction and the news of his marriage came as a surprise to all his friends. Mr. Heyling is the head of the Heyling pharmacy and is one of Anaheim's most popular and promising business men. His bride was one of Olinda's fairest young ladies. After the marriage Mr. and Mrs. Heyling left on a short honey-moon tour and on returning will make their home in Anaheim.
"Gee I didn't believe there were so many autos in all the world," remarked a bystander after watching for half an hour on Sunday evening the evolutions of the numerous machines around the signpost at the corner of Center and Los Angeles streets. The rush began about 4 o'clock and lasted until 9. Most of the autos came from the south and all were loaded with merry-makers who had been to San Diego or the beaches or the canyons on pleasure bent, but hundreds came from other directions. Many bore the names of towns far distant. It looked like that particular corner in Anaheim was a magnet which was drawing all the autos in Southern California together. The congestion lasted for hours, and amid all the windings and twistings and jockeying for space not a single mishap occurred.
Two automobiles were considerably damaged by a collision at the corner of Center and Hermine streets Friday morning, but fortunately none of the occupants were injured. C. E. Vogele, a Placentia real estate man, was driving one machine and Dr. G. W. Classon the other. Classon was going west on Center street and neared the crossing just as Vogele turned out of Hermine. Instead of crossing to the right and rounding the corner in front of Classon, Vogele made a short turn and started east on the left side of the street. Seeing the car emerge from Hermine, Classon turned to the right and bumped into the starboard side of Vogele's machine, forcing it up onto the pavement in front of the Boston bakery. Both machines suffered sprained axles. One of Vogele's front wheels was demolished and Classon lost a headlight.

Fullerton recently purchased a siren and threw its fire bell on the scrap pile. It works to perfection, almost, there being but one slight defect. When a citizen discovers a fire and wishes to report it by phone to the custodian of the whistle he is frequently informed that "the line is busy" and will have to wait.

He and his wife are much surprised and pleased as well to note the growth and development in and about Anaheim and Orange county.
