MANY HIGHWAYS PROJECTED FOR SOUTH
ACTIVITY IN ROAD BUILDING SURPASSES RECORDS OF PREVIOUS YEARS
AUTOMOBILE CLUB KEEPING ACCURATE TAB ON MATTER IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA
New roads projected for Southern California are of interest to motorists at all times, and the Automobile Club of Southern California has prepared a report on just what new highways are planned or are under course of construction.
According to officials of the club, there has never been greater activity in road building than at the present time. It is the outgrowth of the activity of the automobile club which started some years ago, and has swept the state since.
A map on file at the auto club headquarters shows that San Diego county has practically completed its system of good roads, and that those which have been built are excellent. In that progressive county good roads lead to nearly all places of importance, and many long pleasure tours have been provided for motorists.
At the present time San Diego is building a new road connecting the city with Tia Juana, on the Mexican border, and this will provide a trip of importance to 1915 visitors.
Orange county at this time is the center of Southern California road building activity, according to Secretary Standish L. Mitchell of the automobile club. With a bond issue to work with Orange county is building HUNTINGTON BEACH WILL CELEBRATE
Preparations Making For Dedication of Pier June 20 and 21
Huntington Beach, is making elaborate preparations for dedicating the concrete pleasure pier recently completed at that place.
This pier is one of the longest to be found on either of the American coasts, and is claimed to be one of the most artistically designed ever constructed anywhere. The length is 1,316 feet and width 25 feet, except 3 tees which are 75 feet wide; the outer one being 68x75 feet. The structure rests on 208 concrete piles 38 to 64 feet long, and is lighted by 34 ornamental posts adorned with 16-inch globes.
The celebration will take place June 20 and 21, and one of the finest programs ever arranged for by a town the size of Huntington Beach, has been prepared. Music will be furnished by Dontaelli's famous Italian band and the Long Beach Municipal band. The corner stone will be laid at 11 o'clock Saturday, by Santa Ana Lodge No. 794 B. P. O. Elks.
The sports for the day will include swimming and diving exhibitions under the auspices of the Los Angeles Athletic club. Cliff Bowes, the champion diver of the Pacific Coast and Dolly Mings, champion woman swimmer of the Coast will be among the big attractions.
Also the champion Juvenile diver, Ray Kegeris, 11 years old; ex-Champion Juvenile Diver Tommy Whitt, 9 years old, and Paul Lisle, 9 years of age, L. A. A. Club champion. There will also be various kinds of running and skating races.
Another feature that will interest both old and young will be board riding, by George Freese. A good game of baseball has also been provided for, and there will be fencing and a sword dance by the clever Japanese. At 7:30 there will be a band concert on the pier and that beautiful structure illuminated, and at 8 o'clock the ocean will be illuminated in the vicinity of the NOTICE OF AWARD

has prepared a list of good roads, and that those which have been built are excellent.
With a bond issue to work with, Orange county is building many important connections. Notable among these is the long highway leading from Rincon through the Santa Ana Canyon, Anaheim and Cypress to Anaheim Landing.
Two other new projects in Orange county which are of interest to all motorists are the routes leading from Santa Ana to Laguna and Huntington beaches. Orange county is rapidly giving motorists some splendid beach drives, which will appeal to all during the summer season. Among these is the connection to the county line of the road from Santa Ana to Long Beach: The Whittier road from the county line below Whittier through Orange county is rapidly nearing completion.
Besides these main arteries, there are feeders from Olinda through Placentia and from Northam through Buena Park to the county road.
In Los Angeles county there is a new road projected from Torrance to the beach at Redondo. It is also practically assured that the road from Clifton to San Pedro along the beach through the Palo Verde ranch will be widened and graded for motor car traffic. This will form an important connecting link for the all-coast road to San Diego.
Another important link on this road is the one along the coast from Playa del Rey to Manhattan Beach. Frank M. Jordan of the auto club has been assured that work on this all-coast road will be rushed to completion for the latter part of 1915.
From Los Angeles to the sea there is another road of importance leading almost direct along the route of Pico street, as well as the National boulevard from Palms. A second Cahuenga Pass through the Santa Monica Mountains is that projected by way of Benedict Canyon connecting Van Nuys and Beverly Hills, which will give the valley motorists a short cut to Santa Monica.
Riverside county is in the van of good road builders at the present time. With a workable bond issue, new highways are under course of construction for the motorists and agriculturists at all points. So many good new roads are projected by Riverside county that give a complete resume at this time would call for an exclusive column.
San Bernardino county is planning to build some new roads as soon as the bond issue has been passed.
The Imperial Valley is veined with good roads, with an important project of bringing a road through the mountains from Warner’s ranch to the valley. Along the route of the Ocean-to-Ocean highway by the Salton Sea im-

And then will come the grand serpentine battle; free serpintine will be furnished to all who desire to get tangled up in the big battle.
The Sunday program will start at 9:30 with a big casting tournament, by members of the Southern California Rod and Reel Club, and a band concert at 10 o'clock. And at 11 o'clock Union church services will be held on the outer end of the pier, when Rev. R. A. Torrey, one of the world famous evangelists and Bible students will preach.
The afternoon attractions will include the Great Festival Chorus of Southern California, accompanied by Dontaelli’s band, and swimming and diving exhibitions, Japanese jiu jitsu, fencing and sword dance. Evening band concert and water illumination.
BANKERS’ ASSOCIATION FERNINST OVERDRAFTS
Decide to Quit Paying Checks Unless Money Is Behind Them
Some important changes in the system of business has been decided upon by the Orange County Bankers’ Association, one of them being that overdrafts will be eliminated unless the money is on deposit to satisfy it. This decision was reached at the meeting of the association at Anaheim last Tuesday, and a committee was appointed to perfect plans for making the change.
Steps were also taken at this meeting for new rules by the Orange county banks in regard to the discounting of notes in advance. For instance, Mr. Business Man, if you give your bank a note for a certain amount the bank will collect interest in advance up to the date upon which you have assured the bank that the note will be paid.
Another thing which the county bankers have decided to do away with is the custom of bearing the loss of exchange on San Diego banks. Hitherto the exchange on all checks issued on banks in San Diego has been absorbed by the Orange county banks cashing them. For some time the San Diego banks have been collecting exchange at the rate of a minimum charge of 10 cents per $100 and the various banks in the towns of this county had to bear the loss. The bankers do not think it good business to pay $10 for a check and get only $9.90

The Imperial Valley is veined with good roads, with an important project of bringing a road through the mountains from Warner’s ranch to the valley. Along the route of the Ocean-to-Ocean highway by the Salton Sea improvements are projected which will be of vital importance to all transcontinental motorists coming thourgh the Imperial Valley. Mellons and other garden produce are being sent to San Diego now on the improved road by way of the famous Mountain Springs grade.
In Santa Barbara county, as in San Diego, no important new roads are projected, since that county has completed extensive highways which are the joy of all motorists touring through that part of the state. The state is now completing the Rincon link on the coast road.
GOOD WATER PLANT
Contractor Hugh DeBerry has completed his contract for the Yorba Irrigation Company, and that enterprise now has one of the best irrigation plants in the state.
The Yorba Irrigation Company comprise about 40 property owners in the Yorba section, owning about 700 to 800 acres of fertile land, with an ancient water right of 400 inches in the Santa Ana river. Two hundred inches of this is given the Anaheim Union Water Company for delivering the other 200 inches at Yorba and the company delivers this water through their new system to the individual members. The ditches are all underground, avoiding any waste by evaporation or otherwise, 27,000 feet of 18- and 20-inch cement tile having been laid.
To the famous pictures representing Washington crossing the Delaware, Napoleon meeting his Waterloo, De Soto skirting the Mississippi and Funston swimming the Bag-Bag will have to be added that of Roosevelt discovering the River of Doubt.
NOTES FROM OIL FIELD
Well No. 2 of the California-Oklahoma Company on the Basten tract has come in and is estimated to be good for about 1,000 barrels a day, the oil about the same gravity as No. 1, which is still flowing 500 barrels daily. The company also has well No. 1 on the Lehmer tract near completion.
It is a fact worth noting that the Paterson Oil Company, which drilled a dry hole, also has an interest in the Basten property, thereby deriving a revenue from the increasing production of the California-Oklahoma. The company has no interest in the Lehmer tract, however. F. L. Sawyer, secretary of the Kansas Crude Oil Company, is among those interested in the California-Oklahoma.
Several new wells in the vicinity of the California-Oklahoma’s producers are due for completion soon, among them one of the North American’s on the Woodward lease, the Monte Cristo No. 3 on the Robertson lease, the No. 3 of the Dorsby Oil Company and the California-Oklahoma’s No. 1 on the Lehmer tract.
The Dorsby well promises to be a large producer as it offsets the Union Oil Company’s No. 14 well, which is still doing about 800 barrels a day.
Has not General Miles had trouble enough for one lifetime without starting another controversy with Colonel Roosevelt?
