LOST MARRIAGE FEE BUT COLLECTED FINE
Justice Cox Sacrifices Fee When Would-Be Bride Demands Prayer
On May 6 Justice of the Peace J. B. Cox of Santa Ana almost got a marriage fee from A. G. McManus, a Pasadena broker. He failed for two reasons, one because the girl in the case wanted a prayer to accompany the ceremony and the other because the girl refused to be married in Santa Ana for fear that the denunciations of Santa Ana marriages pronounced by Judge Monroe of Los Angeles might have some foundation in fact.
Justice Cox lost that marriage fee, but on Thursday he got $10 from McManus, for McManus was caught traveling the county highway at the rate of 37 miles an hour.
McManus secured a marriage license on May 6 to marry Miss Pearl Guthrie MacCallum of Palm Springs.
Justice Cox was interviewed concerning the wedding. He was willing, of course, his legal fee being $3. But the prayer was asked for. Cox admitted that he never had used one at any of the various weddings that he had undertaken and accomplished during his three and a half years in office. The girl also asked that the ceremony be performed outside the city limits, for she did not like to become a party to Santa Ana's reputation as a Gretna Green.
Cox threw up his hands in despair. Between prayer and leaving his office, he was up against it. He could not get away to accommodate the couple. So he gave them directions as how to get to Orange, where Justice James Fullerton lives.
Justice Fullerton endeavored to secure a prayer book, but had none handy. The hour was getting late, and the young woman concluded to overlook his intentions concerning prayer. Anyhow, she was not in Santa Ana in the hour of her wedding; that was some consolation to her. So the ceremony was performed, minus the prayer.
Later County Motorcycle Davenport overtook a machine on Anaheim boulevard and straightway he took A. G. McManus into the Santa Ana township court. Following mutual recogni-

MOUNTAIN BLOWN UP WITH POWDER
Thirty-Five Thousand Cubic Yards of Earth Lifted at One Blast
With a tremendous boom, a hill of conglomerate was lifted into the air in the Santa Ana Canyon at noon last Thursday. Thirty-five thousand cubic yards of rock and earth, weighing 4,000 tons, were raised from mother earth probably 50 feet, and dropped back ready to be moved by scrapers and wagons. Eleven thousand pounds of black powder, set off by electricity, did the work.
The hill was a rocky point that stuck out into the Santa Ana Canyon near Gypsum Creek, a mile and a half below the Riverside county line. Formed of thousands of huge gravel-shaped rocks, most of them from the size of a man's fist to the size of his head, set in clay, the point has long been a picturesque landmark in the canyon.
Recently the Orange county highway commission let a contract for the building of a wider, straighter road in the canyon. In taking out the sharp turns and kinks it became necessary to remove the point of conglomerate.
Chief Engineer S. H. Finley of the commission stated today that the blast was by far the greatest ever used in Orange county. Preparing for the explosion; tunnels were made into the hills and the powder was put into position.
The highway commissioners and employees of the commission witnessed the blasting, notice of which was not given the public for fear that in the crowd that would gather some would get too close to the hill.
The hill thus loosened was 50 feet high, about 75 feet wide and 150 feet in length.

NEW OIL COMPANY SECURES BIG LEASE
Murray Brothers of Pittsburg Secure Control of 75 Acres
A new oil concern from the east is to enter the field at once. Murray Brothers of Pittsburg, Pa., have taken a long lease on the 75-acre ranch of the Geo. B. Reeve estate four miles northwest of Fullerton.
The signed agreement covers a period of 20 years and work is to commence at once. The first well for oil is to be sunk to a depth of 4,500 feet. While the contract only calls for one well to be drilled a year, it is understood that if any oil strike is made in the first hole a large number of wells will be put down on the property immediately.
The Reeve estate is to receive a royalty of one-sixth of all the oil produced and it is understood that Murray Brothers are also paying a liberal bonus. The first well will be put down in the northeast corner of the place not far from the residence, and about one-half mile northwest from the McNally well.
The first well will be only about three-fourths of a mile from the famous No. 7 well on the Emery lease. The Reeve ranch is under a high state of cultivation, being set to fruit trees and having a good residence and ranch houses. The place as ranch property alone has a valuation of more than $125,000. The place was purchased several years ago by the late Geo. B. Reeve, who for many years was general manager and second vice-president of the Grand Trunk railway company.

The manager of the aeroplane failed in his effort to drop a bomb into one of the smokestacks. If he had succeeded in this he would have sent the gunboat to the bottom. The aeroplane was unable to chase the Morelos out to sea and continue the attack for lack of a sufficient supply of gasoline.
PUZZLING
While waiting between trains at a country town, a traveler walked into the village cemetery. He saw a monument, one of the largest in the cemetery, and read with surprise the inscription on it: "A Lawyer and an Honest Man."
He looked at the monument again. Then he walked all around it and examined the grave closely. Another man in the cemetery approached and asked him:
"Have you found the grave of an old friend?"
"No; but I was wondering how they came to bury those two fellows in one grave."
