Governor Glynn and Mrs. Glynn of New York received the western fezzes at their executive mansion in Albany. The mayor of New York City, and civic officials received them at the city hall in New York. The co realize that the California Shriners from San Francisco, Los Angeles, Oakland and San Diego, who left April 30th, on four steel trains for a tour of fifty-seven cities of the United States to Atlantic, Georgia, completed the most stupendous publicity project ever put into action. Over 25,000,000 people, almost one-third the population of the United States, have received directly and indirectly a welcome to California, fair year. Five carloads of fruits, flowers, and literature from the Golden State have been given away along the tour. Ninety-eight concerts were played by the great ten million dollar band of 120 pieces before 980,000 people, each concert averaging conservatively 10,000 listeners. Many of the concerts were heard by 20,000. In the majority of the cities, including Buffalo, Albany, Rochester, Detroit, New York, Washington, D.C., Richmond, Virginia, and Atlanta, bear flags decorated the streets, which were massed with cheering thousands, and in all of the cities but New York business was suspended in homage to the giant host of serenaders. For the first time in the history of the navy an admiral gave a duplicate of his own flag to an organization outside of the navy, when Admiral Dewey and Mrs. Dewey presented a blue silk flag to the California Shriners in remembrance of the fact that California was the first state of the Union to show an appreciation for the bravery of Americans at Manila by a monument. Pageant blase Washington, D.C., massed Pennsylvania avenue for the great military organization from California and the national suffrage parade, women from every section of the United States broke ranks and sang "I Love You California" while the giant band and Zouave patrols tramped by to serenade the White House. Five hundred newspapers have given publicity to the tour almost every day from April 30th to May 20th. One of the greatest records for newspaper publicity ever successfully carried out. Five stenographers, two multigraph machines, and a telegraph operator were kept busy from morning till night, in telegraphic touch with a fulled an "oasis" or "open house" and welcomed the 40,000 Shriners from the 75 Shrine Temples of the United States in behalf of the Californians. And throughout the country in his many papers special space was daily set aside to give publicity to the touring Californians. One of the four days of the great convention in Atlanta was given over to the Shriners from our state and called "California Day," our Shriners picked out from the 75 other Shrines of the country. The Californians received for eight hours in their quarters, "Hotel California." In the great parades, each over five miles long, and considered equal to King George's Durbar, the greatest Shriner pageants ever in formation, the fezzes from the Golden State received the place of honor, and 250,000 spectators who massed along the line of march roared their enthusiasm and sang "I Love You California" as the giant Drum Major Larson followed by the ten million dollar band and four Zouave patrols tramped by. The largest hotel in Atlanta, Georgia, the Kimball, was chartered by the Californians and its name changed to "Hotel California," a giant electric sign flashing the name through the night. All of the silver, linen, stationery, and even the servants' uniforms carrying the name. California fruits and flowers massed the tables of the dining halls, California vegetables were served in the meals, California wines were used to drink to the health of the Shriners from the other states. Along the halls, at the entrance and along the curbing that approached the hotel California foliage greeted those who visited the headquarters of men who extended the world a welcome to San Francisco 1915. On the first day of their arrival a carload of California cherries were given away, fifteen thousand booklets, and two of the four carloads of fruits and oranges, to the gathering host of fezzed men. Thanks to the Native Sons, hundreds of bear flags fluttered along the streets and massed the great "Hotel California." HARTFIELD fought tooth and nail until the last minute. And while the hundreds of thousands who visited Atlanta bespoke time and again a preference for the Californians, heavy lobby work and politics made the decision dubious until the last minute, though all along the tour the different temples, even the mother temple of America, Mecca of New York City, pledged their votes to the Californians. Motley Flint, Past Imperial Potentate Fred Hines, Teed, "Daddy" Silverwood and others worked night and day when they arrived in Atlanta, in the hardest fight ever made in Shrinedom. In the last moment, after a burst of eloquence by Dr. Mark A. Mathews, a Presbyterian clergyman and one of the leading clergymen in America, and on whom Seattle based half of her strength, a standing vote was asked for on the convention floor and Seattle won. Seattle also presented the argument that their dates for the convention in July would prove a better vacation time for business men than the May dates presented by San Francisco. IN AND ABOUT COUNTY Wants Damage For Truck The Santa Ana Wholesale Grocery Company has filed $1,500 against the Pacific Electric as the result of the wrecking of a grocery company's truck at the West Fifth street crossing on March 19. The company alleges that more will be added next year. It is only a matter of a year apparently when the district will have to squarely face the question of more room. The situation was discussed at the last meeting of the Garden Grove Improvement Association. Fullerton's Registration Figures here given show the total number of voters registered this year to date within the city limits of Fullerton: Republicans, 438; Democrats, 230; Progressives, 172; Socialists, 53; Prohibitionists, 49; decline to state, 85; total, 1,027. Stanton City Hall The city of Stanton will erect a new city hall on Pacific street, a block west of Stanton avenue. The cost will be about $1,500. The structure will be one-story, concrete finish, mission style, and will contain a council chamber and all needed office rooms. Speed Cop Loses When J. W. Bailey of Brea was arrested by Motor Cop Davenport, of Santa Ana, for speeding in Fullerton, the case developed such a difference of opinion that it was taken to Orange to be threshed out. Thus was nearly all the north half of the county drawn into it. Bailey is superintendent of drilling for the Standard Oil Company and has charge of all their wells in that district. With a friend he was driving his automobile in Fullerton when Davenport placed him under arrest. The men disagreed, and Bailey culty in making his getaway if the plans now being made are carried out, for instead of running into a frail wire standard, he will come into contact with a six-inch steel rod which will protrude two feet above the surface of the street. The mutilation of the sign, will therefore, be a less pleasant pastime in the future. Boynton Assaulted The arrival of help was all that prevented Deputy Sheriff Boynton, Wednesday from drawing his gun and making an end of Catarino Nicasio. He had struck Boynton in the face with the free cuff of a pair fastened by one to Nicasio's right wrist and was struggling desperately to get possession of Boynton's revolver when A. Fickas, a section boss, and another man arrived. Nicasio was wanted for slashing another Mexican Monday night. Boynton met Nicasio on the Santa Fe tracks near the Santiago Creek. The officer was placing the handcuffs on the man when Nicasio pounced upon him and tried to throw him. But one of the Mexican's wrists was in the steel bracelets and in the fight a heavy blow landed on Boynton's left cheek bone. Boynton threw the man, who kicked and bit fiercely. The officer would have had to use his gun nad been left to fight it out alone. Nicasio is in jail. Two Days' Celebration The committee in charge of the pier celebration has decided to make it cover two entire days, Saturday and IN AND ABOUT COUNTY Wants Damage For Truck The Santa Ana Wholesale Grocery Company has filed $1,500 against the Pacific Electric as the result of the wrecking of a grocery company's truck at the West Fifth street crossing on March 19. The company alleges that the crossing is exceedingly rough, and though traveling only six miles an hour, the chain of the truck was jolted from the sprockets. The truck came to a stop on the tracks. The wig-wag did not work, and gave no warning of an approaching car. The car was going 35 miles an hour, and crashed into the auto truck at that rate of speed. The truck was rendered worthless, and for that the company asks $1,200. It asks $300 because it was deprived of the use of the truck. Valencia Season Opens The Valencia season for La Habra district opened Friday, picking having commenced and operations having been started to take care of the fine crop at the new packing house. The fruit is well colored, and shipments could have been begun earlier, but the local management preferred to wait for the late navels to disappear from the eastern markets. Preparations are made to ship about 12 cars per week. The La Habra Citrus Association is still young and its packing house was only recently completed, but the association has nearly 1,000 acres in its present membership. About two cars of lemons are going out per week now, and probably 50 cars will be shipped this season. New School Wanted The public schools of Garden Grove are so crowded that the matter of an addition to the present school house has been suggested. A new building on the same grounds beside the present one is a suggested remedy. There are nine teachers at present and one Speed Cop Loses When J. The men disagreed, and Bailey came into court full of fight. The trial was held before Justice James Fullerton in Orange, Thursday, and, due to a lack of evidence against him, Bailey was released. Officer Davenport stated that Bailey's car had been traveling 26 miles per hour, while Bailey and his companions both swore that they had been driving under 15, with their speedometer indicating a speed between 12 and 14 miles per hour. Joy Rider Demolishes Sign Who is the mysterious owner of the automobile who, Thursday morning about 4 o'clock, tore through the streets of Fullerton headed for Anaheim? The city peace officers want to know, and if he is apprehended he will have to explain in a satisfactory way how he happened to strike the sign at the corner of Spadra and Commonwealth avenues bearing the admonition to "Keep to the Right." As a result of the impact, Fullerton's "traffic cop" who is on duty 24 hours a day, is laid up for repairs, and meanwhile an empty barrel has been placed there to mark the point from which all traffic should "Keep to the Right." That the driver of the automobile struck the sign purposely to show his disregard of a very good law is the belief of Nightwatchman Fogel, who was passing the Christian church on his regular rounds at the time. He saw the machine tear by, and a moment later strike the sign. Going to a telephone, he notified the officers at Anaheim to be on the lookout for the man, but they apparently saw nothing of him. The next driver who strikes the sign, though, will have more diff- E FOR YOU! The rains this winter fell in a manner as to permit the grounds to be worked to the greatest advantage.
