FREE AUTOMOBILE TRIP SANTA ANA NOW IS RIVALING RENO SUPERIOR JUDGES WEST AND THOMAS ALARMED AT INCREASING DIVORCE CASES LOS ANGELES APPLICANTS MUST ESTABLISH LEGAL RESIDENCE IN COUNTY HEREAFTER Santa Ana, already famous as a Gretna Green, is budding into the notoriety that Reno has only recently thrown off, but the bud will likely be nipped. As a Mecca for scheming lovers who desire to be married quietly or secretly away from home, the government seat of Orange county has come to stay. Whether it will remain a refuge in time of divorce for those unblessed married persons, who for reasons of their own, do not wish to face proceedings at home, remains to be seen. Orange county's judges are finding out that the courts have been trying Los Angeles divorce cases, and the idea does not meet with favor. Santa Ana's experience as a Reno has come because it has been an easy matter for a resident of other towns to establish a fictitious residence of three months in Orange county for the purpose of bringing divorce proceedings there. There has been no advertising of Santa Ana in its new role. Publicity is likely to put an end to the game, or at least make the procedure more difficult of carrying through. The Orange county superior judges, W. H. Thomas and Z. B. West, have their suspicions aroused, and woe unto him who dares expose his hand, if in truth he is using the judge as a catspaw to pull chestnuts out of the marital flames. If a resident of Los Angeles desired to get a divorce and did not want it known he might find himself in great difficulty were it not that Orange county is conveniently located. If a resident of Los Angeles desired to get a divorce and did not want it known he might find himself in great difficulty were it not that Orange county is conveniently located. He might have to give up his business and move to some haven where six months’ residence is set as the limit. He can’t go to Reno any more, for the Nevada laws now require a years’ residence. Judge Monroe is a terror to those who seek legal separation. His keen and almost harsh way of investigating the innermost thoughts of those who sit in the witness box is reputed to make shy ones cringe. It may be that some of the disgruntled ones have concluded that they would have better luck with a judge in some other county—Orange county has been selected by some. It is convenient, geographically. A person not wise to the game might think he could rush down to Santa Ana and get a divorce just as easily as he can a marriage license. It is not quite that bad. It never is as easy to get unmarried as it is to get married. Civil procedure and the customs of civilization have handicapped the breaking of marital ties. It takes time and sometimes caution. Under the California law a plaintiff in a divorce case must have been a resident of the county in which the action is brought for at least three months. How then is a resident of Los Angles to bring an action in Orange county? It’s perfectly simple. And you do not have to move to Orange county either. You can go right along with your business. You need not miss a lodge meeting or a single service, at your church. Take an electric car to some point in Orange county. Rent a room, say you live there, and stick to that story through thick and thin. You need not be hindered from spending a good Thursday, April 2 nce Sale Sizes. He many days and nights away from home, but nevertheless that room is your residence. At the end of three months your attorney can file a divorce complaint for you at the court house at Santa Ana. It is all so perfectly simple that the only wonder is that it has not been done oftener. The white lie is made remarkably easy when the other party to the divorce defaults. When the case comes up for trial there is no person in court to dispute the story. Who is going to give the judge a tip that the plaintiff is not a resident of Orange county? Who is going to tell him that all he has to show for his residence in this county is a receipt for three months' room rent? Until a few months ago Orange county had but one department of the superior court. After the new department was created and Judge Thomas appointed, all civil cases were given over to him for trial. Judge Thomas thus became the divorce judge of Orange county. Both judges have strenuous ideas on divorce. In fact, for a number of years Judge Thomas has lectured frequently on "The Divorce Evil." "From now on," declared he, "that matter of residence is something that is going to be inquired into mighty closely by this court. Legal residence in the county is one of the things that must be proven under the law, and it has always been proven to my satisfaction in every case that has come before me. I have taken the testimony presented because my suspicions had not been aroused. "A residence made by renting a room or a cottage with no intention of becoming a permanent resident of this county is a purely fictitious residence, and a fraud upon the court. It becomes about the same thing as perjury." Judge West delcared that the period of residence required, three months, is too short. "The legislature ought to make it six months at least," said he. "I had a case where I suspected that the man was not a real resident of this county. I took the inquiry from the attorney and found that he had lived here with his brother for a short time, and had then spent a good deal of the rest of the time at work in Los Angeles. BLIGHT PROOF POTATO A new blight-proof and frost-resisting potato is reported from New Zealand to have been discovered by John Harris of Ohura road, Raetihi, New Zealand. The discovery is said to be the most important one in agriculture for many years, and the agricultural department of the New Zealand government has investigated the phenomenon and admitted that the properties claimed for the new potato are beyond question. Harris has been experimenting with potatoes for years, and some time ago he noticed a healthy stalk growing among a crop of Northern Stars and El Dorados, all of which were affected by blight, and finding it in a perfect state, began to experiment. The result is that a potato now called the New Era has been grown. The variety has been placed under the closest observation, but on no occasion has there been the slightest trace of blight or disease caused by frost, though the crop planted next to it has been blackened by the severe cold and is even now badly affected. LIVESTOCK INDUSTRY The growth of the livestock industry in California between the years 1910 and 1913 shows greater increase than in any other of the 17 states west of Missouri. According to statistics recently issued by the United States department of agriculture, the total number of livestock in California in 1913 was 1,964,000 cattle, 503,000 horses, and 2,603,000 sheep; these figures showing an actual increase for the three-year period of 392,000 cattle, 83,-000 horses, and 231,000 sheep. Taking the country as a whole, there was a considerable decrease in the number of cattle and sheep and a slight increase in the number of horses during that time. An increase in value, however for all livestock in the entire United States for the same period is recorded; the figures for 1913 showing a total of $145,682,000 increased valuation since 1910. E. A. Beard, proprietor of the Suburban Garage, reports the sale of a Buick roadster and a Baby Reo runabout. Mr. Beard says he is making good in his new garage.
