WARRANT ISSUED FOR ARREST OF MUELLER
OBTAINING MONEY UNDER FALSE PRETENSES IS THE CHARGE AGAINST HIM
SMOOTH SWINDLER WHO LEFT MANY VICTIMS TO MOURN HIS DEPARTURE
Officers of the law are now on the lookout for Paul Mueller, the man who for a month cut a wide swath in Anaheim and on his departure left several people to mourn and to long for another glimpse of him. He left early Tuesday morning for San Pedro for the purpose of receiving a large touring car which was being shipped him from Portland. He had special engagements with various Anaheim people on the following day, but he was to drive back in his big car Tuesday evening. One of his most important engagements was with J. M. Estes, manager of the Beebe-Weisel Implement Company, for the transfer of that business to him. He had $70,000 in an eastern bank which was due to arrive that day, and a generous chunk of it would be turned over to Mr. Estes on Wednesday in exchange for his store.
Another important engagement was with Fred Koessel, the real estate man. He had negotiated for Koessel's orange ranch and was to pay $16,000 for the same when his money arrived on Wednesday. All his transactions were to be on a cash basis.
Another engagement, and a very important one, which was to terminate on Wednesday, was his marriage to an Anaheim lady into whose good graces he had ingratiated himself.
The list of parties whom heswindled by borrowing, purchasing goods on credit or through other means is a long one and it is probable the names of his victims are not all known as, no doubt, some prefer to keep it dark. Mrs. Nina Smith, landlady of the Iowa House, where he lodged, is out $12 for room rent, besides $25 which she loaned him Monday night for the purpose of paying the expenses of his trip to San Pedro. This was in the form of a check which he cashed at the Fisher Wine Company's store. Mrs. Smith telephoned the bank to stop payment on it but afterward withdrew her objection and the check was cashed.
Fritz Borchard is also a heavy loser as he gave up a good position for the purpose of working in the implement store and also loaned him $25 to help tide him over until his money arrived on the 17th. An Arizona mining man, Martin Casper, who rooms at the Iowa House, was wheeled out of various loans the whole aggregating over $100. Fred Koessel, whose orange ranch he purchased, also loaned him money it is said.
Several business houses were also stuck by reason of his slick manner and plausible story Among them was Theodore Roberts who, because of his good recommendations and heavy purchases permitted him to carry off articles of jewelry to the value of $100. He fell in love with an $800 diamond ring and wanted to take it with him but Mr. Roberts thought he could get along without it until his money arrived on Wednesday. August Kuehn, the tailor, agreed to wait until the 17th for payment for a $47.50 suit of clothes, and F. A. Yungbluth is still waiting for a $10 balance on an overcoat which he purchased. A German who lives in the Armbrust apartment house on Emily street, boarded him during his short sojourn and the bill is still uncanceled. It is supposed there are others who were taken in by his smooth talk and his large claims but they prefer to keep quiet. In short, Mueller came to Anaheim with nothing, lived on the fat of the land for a month and left with several hundred dollars and goods without doing any relate a fairy story of his.

What direction Mueller took on leaving is of course unknown. It is reported that he was seen in Los Angeles the next day but it is not probable he would remain there. He claimed to have come from Cleveland, Ohio, but telegrams from there state that he was unknown at the places which he mentioned.
As soon as it became evident that Mueller had absconded a warrant was sworn out for his arrest and efforts will be made to locate him by descriptions to officers in various places. A detective from Los Angeles camedown and offered his services in trailing him but as money was needed for this purpose his victims declined to contribute. The sums he secured in each individual case were small, the prospect of finding him was remote and the possibility of getting back the money still more remote.
Mr. Estes, of the Beebe-Weisel Company, states that his firm lost nothing through his manipulations. The invoice of the large stock cost considerable money, but it was the season of the year for the annual invoice anyway and it was only anticipated by a few days. Mr. Estes telegraphed to Cleveland while the invoice was in progress and discovered that his story was a fictitious one.
The warrant charges Mueller with obtaining money under false pretense. He was careful to not issue any bad checks but confined himself to borrowing and buying goods on credit.
POMONA WILL BE EXCEEDINGLY DRY
New Ordinance Prohibits a Man Drinking From His Own Bottle
There must be a halo hanging over our neighboring town of Pomona. Not satisfied with the law prohibiting the sale of intoxicating liquors within its precincts the city council is now considering a more drastic measure.
Under the provisions of the proposed ordinance it shall be unlawful for any person, firm, club, corporation or organization to have intoxicating liquor in its possession. Neither can one man lawfully give another man a drink of intoxicating liquor even though he may be in his own house, unless there is a doctor's prescription, etc.

Furthermore, if a man is walking down the street with a suspicious looking hump on his hip, the chief of police may apply for a search warrant. Intoxicating liquor, according to the ordinance, is that which contains more than one and one-half per cent alcohol. Outside of places where special permits are granted by the council, drug stores are the only places in the city where intoxicating liquor may be kept and sold.
One of the sections of the new ordinance reads, in substance, as follows: "Whenever probable cause exists for believing that any person has on his possession or under his control, any spirituous, vinous, malt or mixed liquors containing alcohol in excess of one and a half per cent, or any articles of personal property with the intent to sell or use the same contrary to or in violation of the provision of this ordinance, or in aid of such violation, application may be made to the police judge of said city for the issuance of a search warrant."
