GAME LAWS FOR COMING YEAR PUBLISHED DRASTIC MEASURES FOR PROTECTION OF FISH AND GAME IN CALIFORNIA SEVERE PENALTIES ATTACHED TO ANY VIOLATIONS OF THE RULES BY HUNTERS A letter has been received at this office from the Fish and Game Commission giving an abstract of the law governing the hunters during the year 1914. Big Celery Crop The celery business seems to be attracting the attention of the ranchers now. The crop is being harvested fast. Three crews are out this week at work. Y. Goto has just finished cutting 30 acres 2 miles north of Talbert. Roy Manley has contracted to cut between 350 and 40 acres. Manley reports the crop exceptionally good. Much better than last year and the price is less. The best grade of celery is 25 cents per dozen. This section of the country seems to be especially adapted to celery growing, as far up as Bolsa and nearly to Santa Ana. The Japs seem to be the most successful growers. NEW NATIONAL FOREST USE BOOK ISSUED The National Forest "Use Book," a pamphlet prepared especially for forest users and others desiring information concerning national forests, has just been issued by the Secretary of Agriculture and received by the San Francisco office of the forest service. With the said of this pamphlet, which differs from administrative editions only in the omission of service regulations and data not of interest to the public, any person may now secure information concerning the national forests without having to wade through a mass of detailed instructions covering procedure affecting only forestry officials. It outlines fully the rights of users, covers methods of procedure, conduct of operations, filing of applications, etc., and described trespasses against the government. The "Use Book" is for free distribution to the people and may be had upon application to any forest service office. Hitherto the compensation of the postmasters has been based upon the receipts, varying according to cancellation of stamps. In the last year the receipts in the postoffice in each of those growing communities went beyond $1,000. That record set the offices in the list of third class offices, and the salary of each postmaster was fixed at $1,100. Raises will be granted from year to year as the receipts of the offices go up. Placentia Lighted Up The street lighting service of the new Placentia lighting district began its nightly vigil Monday night of this week. The benefits of this service will be appreciated in a short time and the objections made thereto will soon have been forgotten. Coming from the unlighted roads into the zone covered by the district the difference is distinctly apparent and the driver in a rig need not worry about running into a footpassenger or the end of an unobserved vehicle, in the dark. The foot passenger will also find it much more pleasant. Run Down by Auto Mr. and Mrs. S. Hughey while driving to Huntington Beach from Garden Grove with a horse and buggy Sunday evening met with what might have been a serious accident, when they were run down by an automobile going in the same direction. One hind wheel of the buggy was demolished, the harness was broken and Mr. and Mrs. Hughey were much bruised and shaken. The documents of the autumn and description fitted exactly a man named William Hall who was turned out of jail on Thursday. Hall has wandered all over the earth, and was sent to jail for disturbing the peace at Anaheim. Dean thinks it likely that the boy met Hall at Huntington Beach, where he was for a day or more. It is not known whether or not the boy had money. He has rather a feminine expression and features. He is over six feet tall. Thrown by Motorcycle Thrown 40 feet when the front fork of his motorcycle gave way, E. G. Stinson was badly injured recently while riding in the Santiago Canyon near the County Park. Stinson was traveling from Olive, where he has the contract to haul gravel for the county highway work, to the County Park, where he is working a crew in excavating the park artificial lake. He took the Villa Park road and was nearing its junction with the El Modena road, a short distance below the park, when a bolt slipped from his machine and the front fork dropped. The rider was thrown with great force and was picked up 40 feet from where the machine struck. A heavy riding coat protected his shoulders from serious injury, but his lower limbs came in contact with the ground and were skinned and battered. Forunately no bones were broken, and it is believed that no permanent injuries will result. Mr. Stinson is confined to his bed and will probably be compelled to remain there for a few days; but it is stated that he is rapidly recovering from the shock and other injuries. “There’s No Place Like Home” Run Down by Auto Mr. and Mrs. The occupants of the automobile drove on, refusing to allow their number to be seen. Mr. and Mrs. Hughey were obliged to walk home and lead their horse. Hold-Up at Santa Ana Leonard Ruiz, while on his way home Wednesday night, was held up about 9 o'clock by two men at the corner of First and Lyon streets, in Santa Ana. Mr. Ruiz had spent the evening there and was walking to his home in Tustin, and when he reached First and Lyon, he was suddenly halted by two masked men, who ordered him to throw up his hands, and having complied with that request, the bandits relieved Ruiz of $5 in silver, a gold ring and his overcoat. They then beat a hasty retreat. City Marshal Jernigan was notified, and with other officers, a search was made for the bandits, but without success. Ruiz thinks the men were Mexicans. Tustin School Bonds There is excellent reason to believe that the $50,000 Tustin school bonds will be sold the first of January. Friday County Clerk Williams received another letter from Farson, Son & Co. of Chicago, bankers, asking for data concerning the Tustin school population, assessed valuation and indebtedness, and stating that if the abstract of the proceedings can be secured at once the bankers will have it examined and be ready for immediate action in January. The Tustin people will welcome a sale, as the erection of a new school house in that district has been delayed by the fact that the money market is so tight that bids for the bonds until now had not been received. The offer to purchase came from the Chicago bankers direct. Sleeper's System Copied County Assessor Montague and Chief Deputy Nichols of the county assessor's office of Riverside county made a careful study of the system of keeping the rolls in the office of County Assessor James Sleeper of this county Thursday, with the result that Riverside county will adopt the system used here. Sleeper's system is recognized by assessors as the best in nationally no bones were broken, and it is believed that no permanent injuries will result. Mr. Stinson is confined to his bed and will probably be compelled to remain there for a few days; but it is stated that he is rapidly recovering from the shock and other injuries. "There's No Place Like Home" HAVE FAITH IN THE HOME MAN It is true today as it was 1900 years ago that "a prophet is not without honor save in his own country." The lack of appreciation by home people has caused many a man to leave a town and seek a new community in which to begin an enterprise. Thus a new industry which might have helped this town to grow was lost because its people lacked faith in the home man. The man who goes away and succeeds is readily acknowledged by the people of his home town as a genius. Many an inventor and many a projector of new enterprises has had this experience; it is common, indeed, to all mankind. Persons in many communities have not sufficiently appreciated what their neighbors were accomplishing or could achieve and so many a man has gone elsewhere and found the recognition that was denied him at home. Give credit and backing to the home man. Have faith in him and encourage him. If this is done fully and freely it will go a long way toward keeping at home many a man who otherwise will go elsewhere to find moral and financial backing. There is genius in this town as well as in any other. If you know of a man who has something to develop, don't let him go elsewhere. Help him to get a start right here. Commercial enterprises are a benefit to any town, and we should have sufficient pride in this town to want it to grow. GRIFFITH LUMBER CO. Anaheim - California Sleeper's System Copied County Assessor Montague and Chief Deputy Nichols of the county assessor's office of Riverside county made a careful study of the system of keeping the rolls in the office of County Assessor James Sleeper of this county Thursday, with the result that Riverside county will adopt the system used here. Sleeper's system is recognized by assessors as the best in the state. In fact, this county is the only county that has assessments written up entirely by typewriters. Sleeper has his books in compact form and in such shape that an assessment being looked up can be turned to very quickly. Sleeper took the Riverside officials on an automobile trip through the citrus fruit sections. Montague remarked upon the splendid appearance of the trees, and said that the trees have a better crop than any he has seen this year. Hipnotized Boy A strange story, clouded in points, is told at the county jail by Gideon Moon, an 18-year-old boy, whose father lives at Montalvo, Ventura county. His tale may be the outpouring of a disordered brain, but the officers think he has been severely dealt with. The boy was picked up on the streets of Santa Ana Saturday as he was soliciting subscriptions for various publications. He told people he met that he did not know his name, but would sign the receipts with the names of some of his dead friends. Not until Monday did the boy's brain clear up, and to Probation Officer Scott and Deputy Sheriff Dean he declared that about a week ago he was either doped or hypnotized by a man named William Hall, a stranger, at Redlands. He said he had but a vague impression of what he had done since then. He gave an accurate description of Hall.
