Who Steal From LIQUOR THIEVES BRING COOL BOARD TO CITY TRUSTEES Fact That Grown Men Are Making a Practice of Buying From Boys, Who Steal From Cellars, Demands Action One of the lowest types of humanity is that man, if he can call himself a man, who buys liquor from boys. Lower still is he who buys liquor from boys, knowing that these same boys had secured the liquor by robbing woodsheds and cellars of those who keep liquor in their homes. What to do with such an individual would call for punishment greater than any at present conceivable. One offense might be passed but when the matter becomes one of steady form, thereby encouraging the boys in their stealing, and, of consequence, DRINKING THEMSELVES and, as conditions show, leading to further thefts, there is no punishment great enough to do justice to his criminal tactics. The above is the sentiment of the city trustees as well as everyone in the city council chambers last evening who listened to Miss Carrie Barnett, principal of the Tipton Lindsey grammar school. Miss Barnett appeared before the board with the school board and teachers explaining to that body the absolute necessity of action on the part of city officials, and especially the city marshal, in stopping these thefts AND SALES OF LIQUOR BY THE BOYS OF BOTH THE GRAMMAR SCHOOLS—STILL IN KNEE PANTS—and HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS. The question reached a head at the meeting of the school board Tuesday evening and following the escapade of the grammar school boys in Dinuba last Saturday, when Visalia grammar school boys carried to Dinuba stolen liquor, sold some of it en route, got into trouble with the Dinuba officers and came home, some of them after the football game in drunken condition. Explains Conditions. A crowned council chamber listened, ASTOUNDED AT THE POSSIBILITY OF SUCH ACTIONS, but with sincere appreciation by all who, KNOWING THAT THE CONDITION WAS BAD IN VISALIA, ALTHOUGH NOT BELIEVING IT WAS AS BAD AS IT NOW APPEARS, approved of the demand of the principal and school board that the city fathers and officers remedy conditions. Miss Barnett explained, "BOYS IN THE GRAMMAR SCHOOLS, STILL IN KNEE PANTS, TOGETHER WITH HIGH SCHOOL BOYS, ARE STEALING LIQUOR FROM THE CELLARS AND WOODSHEDS OF PEOPLE IN THE CITY and are selling it to men. These things I know. I have gone to the bottbm of the affair in every case that has come to my attention. I have interviewed the people who have lost the liquor. They are reliable people and they all claim that they knew nothing of the thefts. I have gotten a couple of the boys to confess to me and I have interviewed the men who have purchased the liquor so what I say here I know to be facts. "Beside this the boys are selling it to other boys and, with the money thereby acquired, are drifting into other vices. We find the boys in Jap town and about the streets at all hours of the night. What Are These Things? "Why should this be allowed to go on? Something has got to be done. I think the trustees should know these things and if there is anything I can do to help you out in giving you names and data. Something has got to be done soon and something will be done. "I know more. Since the stealing of the liquor the boys are stealing elsewhere. We find the school house broken into and the desks pried open. I have fears for the future unless something is done." Demands Sober Thought and Reflection For every Woman to sound the depths of an issue. Residents, Non-Taxpayers, and some DANGERS are asking you to abolish the alcoholic beverages. Institute for the legalized sale does offer? The answer is before you. IT OVER--VOTE YES. M HERALD
