DEAD DUCK CAUSES
HEAPS OF TROUBLE
Two Men Fire Simultaneously and
Fight For Possession
One duck, fired at by two men, resulted in a dispute that caused James
Bryant of Los Angeles to knock John
Hatfield of West Anaheim down with
the butt of his shotgun. Bryant has
been fined $100 in the Huntington
Beach township court for battery upon
Hatfield, and is now in jail here on a
charge of assault with intent to murder C. M. Fender of Buena Park.
Bryant declares that he killed the
duck. When he started to pick it up,
Hatfield was there with the duck in
his hand. The two men exchanged
words. Hatfield was about to put the
duck in his coat when Bryant struck
him in the mouth, knocking out several
teeth and breaking the jaw-bone below
the nose. Hatfield gave up the duck.
Fender, who was with Hatfield,
started toward Bryant. Bryant threw

Examining Sites For Station in Neighborhood of Crown City
Though he made no definite announcement, Dr. H. J. Webber, a member of the board of trustees of the
proposed State Agricultural Experimental Station, who visited Pasadena
to look at a number of sites that have
been put forward by Pasadena as似ly locations for the farm, did not leave
without saying that some of these
would be very acceptable. The cost,
he says, is the only thing that stands
at all in the way. The appropriation
for the experimental station is $60,000
for the ground, with $125,000 more for
buildings and maintenance, and he
feared none of the sites he viewed could be purchased so cheaply.
Dr. Webber, while in the city, was
entertained by the board of trade and
a committee of its members and members of the Pasadena realty board
showed him the available sites near
the city.
He admitted before leaving that it

Bryant was arrested by City Marshal Vincent of Huntington Beach, where he was fined. Fender did not think the punishment sufficient, and swore to a felony complaint here.
The Johnson & Graham Furniture Company's big store at the corner of Chartres and Los Angeles streets has passed into the hands of Mr. Graham, that gentleman having purchased the interest of Mr. Johnson. He has started his career by inaugurating a special sale, the like of which was never seen in Anaheim. His ad on the eighth page explains the bargains he is offering to the public. This is the F. A. Backs store and as all the old goods were disposed of in the Backs' sale a year ago, the articles offered by Mr. Graham are of necessity new and upto-date. This is one of the largest furniture stores in the county.
W. H. Rockwell, of West Anaheim, has just sold through the Anaheim Fruit Growers' Association, the product of 124 trees of Valencia oranges covering one and one-fourth acres of ground. The net receipts after paying all expenses of cultivation and gathering aggregated $3,834.91. Persons who regard two thousand dollars an acre for an orange orchard a fictitious price will please take notice and paste this in their hat.
POLYTECHNIC SCHOOL OPENED MONDAY
Santa Ana's New School Now Being Used
The new $200,000 Polytechnic High School at Santa Ana was opened Monday. The two buildings formerly used for high school and commercial high school have been transformed into the intermediate school, for the seventh and eighth grades of the city. This will be the city's first intermediate school.
The Polytechnic High School is composed of a group of three handsome buildings, the completion of which is being rushed this week for the opening of school. The exterior of the front of the administration building he says, is the only thing that stands at all in the way. The appropriation for the experimental station is $60,000 for the ground, with $125,000 more for buildings and maintenance, and he feared none of the sites he viewed could be purchased so cheaply.
Dr. Webber, while in the city, was entertained by the board of trade and a committee of its members and members of the Pasadena realty board showed him the available sites near the city.
He admitted before leaving that it is the desire of the other members of the board, as well as his own choice, to locate the new state farm near Los Angeles, as that city is the hub of the citrus country, and he said that so far as soil and location are concerned, Pasadena, or a place near Pasadena, would be ideal.
The visitor arrived in the morning and both the forenoon and afternoon were consumed in looking over possible places. The old Stone ranch, owned by A. Steven Vavra, was visited in the morning, as was the Huntington property and the ranch of F. O. Popenoe in Altadena. The greater part of the afternoon was spent in touring La Canyada Valley.

KRYPTOK
THEO. ROBERTS
Doctor of Optometry
Invented the bifocal spectacle 130 years ago. It was he who hit upon the idea—then thought marvelous—of taking a near-sighted lens and a far-sighted lens and cutting each in half. These were fitted in his clumsy spectacle frame—the far-sighted lens being on top and the near-sighted lens at the bottom.
The last and best improvement since then is the KRYPTOK lens. It shows no line of division and is the only invisible bifocal lens made.
We will be glad to show and explain to you the triumph of science—the KRYPTOK.

MUCH PUBLIC LAND RESTORED TO ENTRY
Three Quarters of a Million Acres Opened to the Public
Three quarters of a million acres of public lands were restored to entry last month. These restorations were based upon recommendations made by the United States Geological Survey as a result of its classification work in the Western States. The only area withdrawn was one of 235 acres in California, temporarily reserved from entry because of its possibilities for developing water power. The largest restoration was in Montana, where 527,747 acres were restored to public entry as the result of coal classifications completed. In addition to this, restorations of coal land involving 214,742 acres were made in Colorado, New Mexico, North Dakota, Utah and Wyoming. In California, Idaho, Oregon and Washington, 7,824 acres heretofore reserved for water power were restored, examination having indicated that they are not valuable for the purpose for which they were withdrawn.
About 83,000,000 acres of land have now been classified as to their coal content; 61,484,052 acres have been classified as non-coal land and less than 20,000,000 acres have been classified as coal land and values of over $760,000,000 placed upon them in accordance with the provisions of the coal land law and the department regulations. The remainder has been restored without classification.
M. L. Samson and wife, who have been visiting their old home in Dakota returned to their home in West Anaheim yesterday morning. Mr. Samson reports an exceedingly enjoyable visit.
William Renner and Leonard Evans ask for letters on the estate of Edith Renner, who died a year ago. The estate is at Anaheim and is worth $50. Weisel & Dutton are attorneys for the petitioners.
Miss C. Marie Nelson, 111 East Center street, invites the ladies to call on Saturday afternoon and evening to see the new styles in fall and winter hats.
Pete Snyder, proprietor of the Favorite Cafe, was knocked down and seriously injured by an automobile driven by Dr. Gifford as he was crossing Center street Monday afternoon.

Search is being made for Harry J. Thomson, whose two pool halls at Balboa have been closed by attachment from the Los Angeles Board of Trade on bills aggregating $814.52. It is also claimed that Thomson issued a number of bad checks before he left. Thomson was formerly a conductor on the Newport line of the Pacific Electric. He is said to have gone to Mexico to join his friend, Didier Másson, the aviator.
