MUSIC AND ART FOR SUMMER STUDENTS
LECTURERS COMING FROM ENGLAND TO TEACH AT UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA
NOTED LANDSCAPE PAINTER TO HAVE CHARGE OF SUMMER WORK IN ART
All the way from England is coming a member of the Oxford-Cambridge extension staff, to lecture on "Art in Daily Life" in the six-weeks' summer session of the University of California, at Berkeley June 23 to August 2. This is I. B. Stoughton Holburn, M. A., F. R. G. S., known as an art critic through his lecturing in England, Germany, Switzerland, and France.
His thesis is that art affects life at every turn, that love of the beautiful is an essential quality of human nature, and that modern men should see to it that beauty and not ugliness shall prevail in the houses in which they dwell, the things of daily use, the planning of towns and cities, the music they hear, the pictures they see, and the literature they read. Besides lecturing on "Art in Daily Life," every evening from July 14 to August 2, Mr. Holburn will lecture daily for those three weeks on "The Philosophy of the Beautiful."
Art and music are to be made a special feature of this year's University of California summer session.
The landscape painter, Eugen Neuhaus, will have charge of the summer instruction in art. He is a painter of distinction. Through many admirable canvasses he has revealed the broad and noble beauty of headland cliff and as a member of the University of California faculty. A well-known California newspaper illustrator, Perham W. Nahl, will teach figure drawing, freehand drawing and perspective, and drawing in charcoal and wash from casts of antique sculpture. Many of the drawing courses will be particularly planned to help teachers of drawing. Instrumental drawing and descriptive geometry will be provided for.
The glorious story of the development of Greek art, from man's earliest appearance in the Mediterranean basin to the great days of Phidias, and on to the Roman conquest of Greece, will be told in lectures every evening by Professor Oliver M. Washburn, with over a thousand stereopticon slides showing ancient works of art to make the tale real.
In music, students will be trained to write down a melody as they hear it played, taught how to listen to music and how to understand it better, and taught how to write out melodies and compositions of their own creating. In charge of the work in music will be Charles Louis Seeger, Jr., professor of music in the University of California, formerly a conductor for the Cologne opera, in Germany, trained in music in Harvard, Berlin, Munich, etc., and composer of much published music. Public school music methods will be dealt with by supervisors of music from cities and from normal school and by other experts. All the summer session students who wish to participate will be welcomed into the large chorus, which will prepare a cantata and present it at a concert, and which will study also rounds, madrigals, and other works suitable for high schools, glee clubs, and concerts. There will be a "Half Hour of Music" in the Greek Theater every Sunday afternoon, organ recitals and other concerts, and all the rich opportunity in the way of plays, opera and concert that San Francisco always affords, conveniently at hand.

Now that instruction by correspondence is to be given by the University of California, beginning with next August, attendance on a summer session has a new value, for a student may start a subject in a six-weeks' summer session class, continue its study by correspondence courses throughout the whole following year, and then come again to Berkeley the next summer for advanced work. Thus he will build on the foundations of a year's systematic reading and study, done under the careful guidance and supervision of the new department of correspondence instruction—a new university undertaking which promises much usefulness to participate will be welcomed into the large chorus, which will prepare a cantata and present it at a concert, and which will study also rounds, madrigals, and other works suitable for high schools, glee clubs, and concerts. There will be a "Half Hour of Music" in the Greek Theater every Sunday afternoon, organ recitals and other concerts, and all the rich opportunity in the way of plays, opera and concert that San Francisco always affords, conveniently at hand.
The students who come particularly for art or music will avail themselves also of course in other departments, as visitors or as enrolled students as they may prefer. In English, for instance, there will be lectures on "American Literature" and on "Browning," by C. Alphonso Smith, Edgar Allen Poe, professor of English in the University of Virginia and recently Roosevelt professor at Berlin, and there will be special training in the art of public speaking and in literary interpretation by Dean Robert I. Fulton of the College of Oratory of Ohio Wesleyan University. There will be lectures in French, on masters of the novel, and courses in Italian and in Spanish. In the physical education department there will be 37 different courses, including, among others, courses in aesthetic dancing, national dances, and children's singing games. There will be a course on the birds of California, and others on botany and on physical geography. In all, 30 different university departments will be represented, in subjects all the way from philosophy to surveying, and from cooking, sewing, and typewriting to child hygiene, dairying and horticulture for high schools, manual training, and folklore and anthropology.
Last year's summer session at Berkeley was exceeded in size by only one other in America. It enrolled 2,275 men and women. From present indications this summer's attendance seems likely to be larger by a thousand.

Kelly & Herzler, the Anaheim cement pipe men, report work in their line booming. They have just completed 11,000 feet of cement irrigating pipe for the Ideal Water Company, a large order for Supervisor Schumacher, Elmers Bros., and many other ranchers throughout the country. All their work is first-class, and so sure are they that it will give satisfaction that they say "don't pay unless our work suits you." This is probably the largest private cement contracting firm in the county, and has a large number of creditable jobs to its credit near this city and in other parts of the county.
Mrs. M. J. Thompson and her two charming daughters, Mrs. Walter Mentzer, of Denver, Colo., and Miss Mary Ellen Berger, of Davenport, Iowa, arrived at Anaheim Thursday to make an extended visit with her daughter, Mrs. Louis Feld, on her orange ranch southeast of town. Mrs. Thompson and her daughters intend making California their future home and will take up their residence in Los Angeles some time next fall.

Olive Well in Oil Sand
There is a good deal of quiet excitement at Olive just now over the report that fine oil has been struck in the well being put down near that place by the Standard Oil Company. The well is said to be down about 1,500 feet. A sand that looks like oil sand of the most encouraging kind has been brought up. The workmen on the well are keeping information, if they have any, to themselves. The report has gained credence through the fact that in the last few days several well-known Standard Oil men have visited the well.

Because there were not enough tomatoes shipped to fill an order, the Santa Ana Wholesale Grocery Company has brought suit against the Growers' Home Canneries Company of Los Angeles for $648. The complaint states that the cannery contracted to deliver 1,000 cases of canned tomatoes to the Santa Ana wholesale house by November 1, 1912, with 40 cases to be given for prompt payment. Of the order but 315 cases have been sent, which have been paid for at $1.70 per case. The wholesale grocery considers the cases worth $2.50 a case, and by failure to receive the remainder of the order it has been damaged $648.
Stanton's Municipal Fight
A new phase in the long drawn fight for disincorporation of the city of Stanton developed this week when F. C. Beecher, resident of the city, called at the office of the county clerk for assistance in preparing affidavits of legal circulation of a petition for withdrawal of practically the northern half of the present incorporated territory which will be presented to the city council of Stanton at its next regular meeting. As explained by Mr. Beecher, this petition will take the place of a petition for disincorporation of the entire city which has been prepared and circulated. Beecher believes that a petition for withdrawal of the north one-half of the territory now included in the corporate limits of the city will be strongly supported, and for this reason he is making haste to get it before the city council before the original one can be presented. The petition for withdrawal contains some 60 names.

Contract Let For Building
A contract was signed this week for the construction of a new packing-house for the Fullerton-Placentia Walnut Growers' Association to be built on the site of one that recently burned down. Bishop & Cole, contractors of Santa Ana, secured the contract, the price of which is about $8,000, and work upon which was begun promptly this week. The new building will be equipped with all modern appliances for handling walnuts. The main building will measure 126 by 70 feet, with a machine shop measuring 24 by 60 feet. Brick, concrete and wood will be used in the construction.
Bride Tires of Matrimony
Although but a bride of less than six months, Claire Baker has tired of the matrimonial yoke and has through her attorney, F. C. Spencer, asked the superior court to cut the knot that binds her to Ivan C. Baker by annulling the marriage contract with him at Anaheim on the 13th day of last January. In her complaint plaintiff alleges that defendant represented himself as socially and morally competent to wed her, but that he really was leading a "fast and high" life, and not conducting himself in a moral or sober manner. Plaintiff was Claire M. Raker, before she became Claire M. Baker.

I came not here to talk—ahem! that's about all I know of that. I came to shy a few remarks in the sawdust ring of Opportunity. There's a likely nag for you, if you seize her by the forelock at the auspicious moment. If you don't, you are likely to get thrown.
Any citizen of this burg can be the real "Opportunity Kid" if he or she will bring us that lumber bill about now. What is worth doing well is worth doing today, so seize this opportunity while you may and give us an opportunity to serve you well.
Poured Hot Water Over Small Brother
That Jose Martinez, a feeble-minded boy, had poured hot water over his younger brother and caused his death was made known to District Attorney West on Saturday when an application was made for Martinez's arrest on an insanity charge. The frightful tragedy occurred six months ago, but the ignorance of the boy's parents caused them to say little of the death of the child. Jose Martinez is about 16 years old. His parents live at Talbert. The boy's parents left him at home with a small brother. In the house was a kettle or boiler of boiling water. In some manner the child was so badly scalded that he died from the effects of his injuries.
The story at Talbert is that the feeble-minded boy poured the water upon his brother. It seems that no connected story of the affair could be secured, as only the imbecile and the injured child were present. Outside of that one act the boy was not considered dangerous until recently. For several days now he has made a practice of going out into the country and lying in the weeds beside the road. He has given several small girls severe frights. Some of the residents of Talbert made an investigation, with the result that it was concluded to take immediate action to have the boy cared for.

Mexican Thieves at Laguna Beach
A score of more cottages at Laguna Beach have been plundered recently by a gang of Mexican thieves. One of the gang, T. G. Gonzales, is in the county jail charged with burglarizing a cottage that belongs to Charles W. McKeen of Garden Grove. There is some reason to believe that an attempt was also made by the Mexican to steal a 2-year-old child. The child was missing for two or three hours. Children reported that the Mexican was seen taking the child along the road up Laguna canyon. The child was found at the old sheep camp under some sycamores. Fred Trefren of Laguna Beach and others concluded that the camp was a stopping place for thieves, and descended upon it with the result that a truckload of plunder was recovered and taken to Trefren's house. Pillows, blankets, clocks, stoves, rugs, and all kinds of articles were found. Some of the gang are thought to have peddled some of the articles stolen, and not recovered.

Mrs. Olga Luedke Soboleff Passes
Away at Juneau Hospital After Long Illness
Mrs. A. Frohling is in receipt of the sad news that her niece, Mrs. Olga Luedke-Soboleff, passed away in the Juneau hospital, Alaska, on May 11, 1913, of pleuro pneumonia. Mrs. Soboleff was a pioneer of southeastern Alaska. She was 58 years of age, and was born on June 5, 1854, in San Francisco. Four children survive: they are Mrs. Fay Bayers, Mrs. Lloyd Bayers, Vincent and Alexander Soboleff. Her remains were taken to Sitka and buried there beside the grave of her husband. A beautiful tombstone will be erected to mark her resting place, ordered by her sons and daughters. Deceased was formerly a resident of this city, and her parents, Mr. and brother. The boy cannot talk plainly. His mumblings go to indicate a disordered mind.
