The board of City Trustees is going ahead with its plans for paving North and South Los Angeles street, and will probably within sixty days be ready to award contract for the work. Only three-fourths of a mile of thoroughfare remains to be paved on this street, which will join the present paved area with the State highway north and south of town. For some months past paving on Broadway and Lemon streets, as well as upon other streets which last summer seemed to be very desirous of this improvement, has apparently dropped out of sight. One after another residents upon these thoroughfare have protested themselves out or have attempted to do so, leaving Los Angeles street as the only thoroughfare in town now ready for paving. At a meeting held at the Board of Trade rooms last summer, property owners upon these streets seemed to be most anxious for paving, but at the present moment most of them appear to have been lost in the shuffle. To our mind, the City Trustees should include at least portions of Broadway and Lemon streets in their present proceedings, and see that these streets are paved when the paving of Los Angeles street shall be ready to begin. To ask for bids for paving only three quarters of a mile of thoroughfare when probably two or... WESTERN HEMLOCK Western hemlock, says the Department of Agriculture, deserves a better opinion and more general use than it now obtains. Intrinsically it is among the most important of western woods. The wood of western hemlock has generally been considered an inferior one chiefly because of the prejudice created by the name, which has caused it to be identified with eastern hemlock. Tests by the Forest Service, however, show it to have 88 per cent the strength of Douglas fir, one of the country's chief construction timbers. In fact it is often mixed with Douglas fir and used for the same purposes. The wood is practically free from pitch, has a handsome grain, takes paint and stain well, and works smoothly. It is suitable for sash and door stock, furniture, interior finish, framing, flooring, boxes, barrels, and pulp. In bridges and trestles it can be used for all but the heaviest construction. When properly treated with preservatives, it is a valuable cross tie at K.C. hall Friday by members of the high school boys' club and their friends. Music was furnished by Mrs. Adams and Miss Gladys Shields, who was down from Los Angeles for the occasion. That rose bush over the front porch with its profusion of roses we must have it photographed. Let's see—who does the best view work? Why the Howard studio, at the most reasonable prices. 130 So. Los Angeles street, Anaheim. The plans for the rectory of St. Michael's Episcopal church, Rev. D. Todd Gillmor, rector, have been given to several contractors of the city to figure on. It is expected that the new home for the rector and Mrs. Gillmor will soon be in course of construction. A. H. Cannon, who has been pianist for the Fairyland theater for some weeks has accepted a position as salesman with C.T. Webber & Sons in the piano business, but will for a time in fulfillment of contract, continue to play at the Fairyland. H. C. Bilger has purchased the Fairyland moving picture theater and the first show under the new management will be held Sunday evening. Mr. Speicher, recently in charge of the amusement place, will devote his energies to his theater at Fullerton. Mr. Bilger is an experienced theater man, and in the Fairyland the public can be assured of one of the best shows in the county. Ed. Goetz, George Click, Fred Alumbaugh, of this city, and Murray Shampang, of Orange, made a motorcycle trip to San Diego the first of the week, leaving for the southern city Saturday night and returning here Monday morning. They report a fine trip with no serious trouble with their motors, although they were run several hours continuously. J. L. Cadman has resigned his position as automobile salesman with M.W. Skinner and has taken the Oakland for this district. He has received and now has on exhibition a new "Oakland 35," which is one of the classiest autos the market affords. Jack has been in the automobile business a number of years, and has a successful career as salesman back of him, having sold 17 cars since starting in business with Mr. Skinner in this city in September. He knows the business from the ground up, he's one of the best salesmen in the county. "HOME-LIKE" CHURCH NOTES Regular services next Lord's day as follows: Bible school at 9:45 A.M. When properly treated with preservatives, it is a valuable cross tie and pole wood. According to Forest Bulletin 115, the best stands of western hemlock are found in the coast region and through the Cascade Mountains. The bulletin further gives the results of tests by which the mechanical properties of western hemlock have been determined, and tells of the different uses to which the wood is adapted. SUCCESSFUL RECITAL The recital given by the pupils of Miss Trowbridge and Miss Sutherland of the College of Music of the University of Southern California, on Saturday afternoon was a surprising success. A large number of the parents and friends of the pupils were present. Although the college has had work here but a short time, the progress of the students was surprising, all acquitting themselves with credit, from little 4-year-old Miss Charlan Tedrick, who played her piece so cutely, to the most experienced and accomplished. Miss Trowbridge and Miss Sutherland were warmly congratulated by the pleased parents and friends of the pupils. The next recital will be in June, when all the students will take part. KENDALL CO., Pasadena. To the Lover of Good Coffee This is the ROYAL MILL that CUTS THE COFFEE We have installed in our store a new ROYAL ELECTRIC COFFEE MILL. This machine is equipped with steel knives which CUT the berry into practically uniform clean cut particles, instead of grinding and crushing it, as by the old method. All Coffee Mills heretofore used will only crush the berry, mutilating the minute oil cells, allowing the Coffee Oil to evaporate, thus impairing the strength and flavor. By this new process the little oil cells remain unbroken, the essential oil (food product), cannot evaporate and the coffee thus retains its fine, rich, aromatic flavor in its full strength. This is one reason why a pound of coffee cut in this mill will make from 12 to 15 cups more of full strength coffee than will any coffee ground the old way.
