GOLD MEDAL FOR LUCKY BOY OR GIRL BEST COMPOSITION ON CARE AND MAINTENANCE OF EARTH ROAD TO RECEIVE AWARD ALL ANAHEIM STUDENTS BETWEEN AGES OF 10 AND 15 ELIGIBLE FOR PRIZE A gold medal to the school boy or girl between the ages of 10 and 15 who writes the best composition, not to exceed 800 words, on the repair and maintenance of earth roads, is to be awarded by Logan Waller Page, Director, Office of Public Roads, United States Department of Agriculture, Washington, D. C. All compositions must be submitted to Mr. Page before May 15, 1913, and the medal will be awarded as soon thereafter as the compositions can be graded. The composition may be based on knowledge gained from books or other sources, but no quotations should be made. After many years’ experience in dealing with the public road situation of the country, it is Mr. Page’s belief that ignorance on the subject of repair and maintenance of roads is as much the cause of their bad condition as any other one factor. It is expected that the competition will bring about a better understanding of the subject of repair and maintenance in the rural districts. Many children living in the rural districts have experienced the disadvantage. IN AND ABOUT THE CITY Henry Braden is on duty again at Weisel & Company’s garage after a week’s vacation. Miss Gladys Goble spent several days the past week as a guest of friends at Long Beach. Mr. and Mrs. Rudolph Moult and their two daughters of Billings, Mont., were guests on Saturday of V. U. Simpson. A window full of rings, everyone solid gold. Sets are guaranteed to stay in. The price is especially low during this sale. Investigate. Theodore Roberts, East Center street. J. B. Neff left on Saturday for Santa Barbara, San Luis Obispo and other up-coast points, where he spent several days arranging for farmers’ institutes. He will return today. The Pacific Electric has petitioned the Board of Supervisors for permits to make fills on Electric avenue, Main street and Ocean avenue at Bay City, and at Pomona avenue at Brea. Fred Ahlborn attempted to qualify for a place in the Ananias club on Saturday by predicting rain within three days. Rain arrived on schedule time Monday morning and Fred is not yet eligable as a member of the club. Mr. and Mrs. Byron Warner of Toledo, Ohio, left Saturday for their home in that city, after spending the winter in California. They were guests for some weeks of Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Trudeau in this city. Mr. and Mrs. Chas. It is expected that the competition will bring about a better understanding of the subject of repair and maintenance in the rural districts. Many children living in the rural districts have experienced the disadvantages of roads made impassable through a lack of proper maintenance and it is expected that their interest in the competition will stimulate greater interest among the parents. Bad roads have prevented many children from obtaining a proper education and have even prevented doctors from reaching the side of rural patients in time to save their lives. Any child between the ages mentioned, attending a country school, may compete. Only one side of the paper must be written on; each page should be numbered; the name, age and address of the writer, and the name and location of the school which he or she is attending must be plainly written at the top of the first page. The announcement of the competition has been sent to the superintendents of schools in the rural districts. No further information can be obtained from the Office of Public Roads. This announcement should be plain to everyone, and all children will thus start on a basis of equality. Now is the time for the Anaheim students to get in and “dig,” and we doubt not that one of the local lads or lassies can land the prize if they only try and do their best. Get busy and see what you can do. MILLS HAS TROUBLES ABOUT ROAD MONEY Declares Southern Districts Have Been Given More Dinero Than Should Have Been Allotted Them Editor Gazette: In regard to county road money and redistricting the supervisorial districts, more or less all over the county the idea has been given out that the coast people are short on county and state good roads and that they are entitled to extra money on this account. The facts are, however, that the coast people got the lion’s share of everything in sight and are still grasping for the balance. Consulting the map of the county Have Been Allotted Them Editor Gazette: In regard to county road money and redistricting the supervisorial districts, more or less all over the county the idea has been given out that the coast people are short on county and state good roads and that they are entitled to extra money on this account. The facts are, however, that the coast people got the lion's share of everything in sight and are still grasping for the balance. Consulting the map of the county good roads it will be seen that that section of the county south of Orange, Santa Ana, Garden Grove and Westminster get 44.36 miles of these roads, being about 42 per cent, while their assessed valuation would give them but 31 per cent. So of the money for county good roads they get an excess of $157,665.00. Of the state road this south section gets 32.55, being 75 per cent of this road, giving them an excess of this fund of $115,620.00, estimating the cost of the state highway at $6,000 per mile. For the year 1912 the coast supervisor districts got from the current expense fund of the county an excess of $11,329.19. The bridge bond money has not yet been expended but the coast districts are slated to get most of this. Of the three funds given these south people get an excess of $384,614.00. Fairly good for one year's work. A. A. MILLS. CARD OF THANKS The Sisters of St. Catherine's Orphanage hereby wish to thank their kind friends and benefactors, who have devoted time and labor in getting up the entertainment for the benefit of the school. Sincere thanks are offered to all who have in any way helped to make the undertaking a success. May God repay their kindness hundredfold. Miss Cleone Ethelynd Groat, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. C. E. Groat, of Los Angeles, will become the bride of Dr. Lewis A. Athon of that city, June 12, the marriage ceremony to take place in the evening of that day in the Wilshire boulevard Christian church. A large number of guests will be invited to witness the ceremony. Miss Groat, a popular young woman in whose honor many prenuptial affairs are being planned, is a talented reader and frequently at social affairs has delighted her friends with her clever work. She was formerly a resident of this city, and has many friends here who extend felicitations upon the announcement of her engagement. Deputy County Clerk J. M. Backs and family drove over from Santa Ana on Saturday afternoon and spent Sunday with relatives and friends in town. Mr. Backs is the only citizen of Anaheim who ever held a position at the court house, and his many friends here and elsewhere about the county lean to the opinion that he would grace one of the offices at the big county building. He has made good as deputy clerk, being one of the most capable men who ever held down the job. He might be given honorable promotion. Joe would be a vote-getter, being a native of the county and having as many friends as any man who ever lived here. He would add to the strength of the ticket, and would run like a prairie fire on election day. At a meeting of the committee of the New York City Southern California Angeles April 12th, it was the annual meeting of the association and June 7th. Further notice will be issued. Committees are already at work in the various towns and the purse as well as the interest is growing daily. Field Manager Harold Ostrom after a week in San Francisco has left for a trip down the coast, interviewing the dealers and civic bodies in San Jose, Pasa Robles, San Luis Obispo, and Santa Barbara. He had previously made a trip through the valley and found the valley towns enthusiastic over the prospects and more than willing to help in raising the big purse which will attract the largest field of entries ever seen in a contest of this character. While in San Francisco Ostrom appeared before the Fair officials, the Portola Festival committee and the Dealers' Association. The Dealers' Association is to be represented by a committee headed by W. L. Hughson. The dealers are enthusiastic over the race and there are certain to be a goodly number of entries from the Exposition city. The Fair officials have taken so much interest in the event that they have under consideration a plan to finish the race inside the Fair grounds. The merchants want the race and are willing to help. Within the next month a joint committee meeting will undoubtedly be called for the purpose of considering the best plans on which to work out the various problems. L. Derfus with Clyde Bishop as attorney, brought suit against Willis Decker for $49.70. The plaintiff is a motorcyclist and the defendant an automobileist, and the suit is brought because motorcycle and automobile came together on South Main street at Santa Ana. Derfus alleges that Decker was driving in a careless and reckless manner and struck Derfus' motorcycle, damaging it $17.70, and laying Derfus out for two weeks with a sprained ankle, for which $32, including $2 X-ray bill, is asked. Judging from this preliminary interest there will be closer to 50 entries than 25. The Studebaker Pathfinder which made the trip over the valley route, has returned to Los Angeles, following the coast road for the trip back. The little car has performed well on the thousand mile grind and on account of the time spent by the party in the various towns en route Frank Goode was forced to make some fast drives between the different points.
