SPRING FESTIVAL AND PAGEANT TONIGHT
ONE HUNDRED AND TEN HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS TO APPEAR IN PRODUCTION
TO BE ONE OF LARGEST AFFAIRS EVER PUT ON THE STAGE HERE BY LOCAL TALENT
The Spring Festival and Grand Pageant of American History, for the presentation of which one hundred and ten students of the local high school have been working overtime the past few weeks, is to be presented at the high school tonight, Thursday, April 3, at 8 o'clock. The entertainment is to take the place of one of the regular high school course entertainments which could not be given on account of sickness of members of the party. Under the direction of Mrs. E. M. Bartlett and Miss Rose Osberg, those taking part have been rehearsing for some weeks, and the finished production to be put before the public tonight will be something for local people to be proud of, the entire affair being arranged and staged by people of the high school. Mrs. Bartlett and Miss Osberg were the originators of the idea, the former arranging the music, the latter the steps for the dances, and both working on the staging and rehearsals. Season tickets will be honored. Single tickets 50 cents. Following is the cast of characters:

C. E. Bowlen Left Yesterday to Take Position in Treasury Department
Chas. E. Bowlen left yesterday for Washington, D. C., where he goes to assume the duties of a clerkship in the Treasury Department, having been recommended to that position by Congressman, Kettner. Mr. Bowlen is a Republican of the old-line school, but when he was debarred the privilege of voting for Taft electors last year, he supported Wilson on the Democratic ticket. He attended the Republican county convention as a delegate from his precinct in this city, which was held at Santa Ana last summer, and when the ultra progressives assumed control and adopted resolutions denouncing Taft and "the late Republican party," Bowlen with many others bolted the convention. He formed a close friendship with Congressman Kettner, and was instrumental in rolling up a good majority for the San Diego man in Anaheim which was the only town in the county giving him a majority.
After Kettner's election, he promised Bowlen an appointment and has been as good as his word, for the latter this week received advices from Kettner saying that he had been appointed a clerk in the Treasury Department. The position pays about $2,000 a year.
Marian Boynage, formerly a resident of this city, but now of Los Angeles, was in town over Sunday, visiting numerous friends here. He is traveling for a popular magazine house, and stopped off in this city on his way to San Diego, where he went on business for his firm.
GAME CONDITION THROUGHOUT THE STATE
CONSERVATION NEEDED FOR SOME VARIETIES ARE BECOMING ALMOST EXTINCT
DEER REPORTED ON THE INCREASE IN SOME PARTS OF STATE—DOUBTFUL
As a people we have been slow to realize the importance of the wild life of our country. Our love of hunting has caused the extermination of some of our characteristic varieties of game. In our desire to have a full game bag to our credit, we have been reaching out to the more inaccessible places where game still approaches the conditions that were formerly common throughout the entire country. This desire to protect and cherish that with which we were so abundantly favored has not kept pace with the ability to kill; so that at the present time, there is in many of the states practically no game.
In our own state, says J. S. Hunter, in charge of game conservation, fish and game commission, while there is not an abundance of game, enough will still remain if judgment is used in the killing that the generations to come will find a state in which game still flourishes and in which the man who enjoys the most fascinating of all sports, may go into the field with his gun and dog and participate in the pleasure of his forefathers.
Our game animals are so valuable that the title to them has been retained violent deaths, so that 30,000 can be fairly accurately placed as the number of deer dead from all causes in the state.
COUNTY DEMOCRATS AT PIE COUNTER
Central Committee Meets and Endorses Candidates For Postmasters
J. F. Ahlborn, G. J. Stock and Eli Sparks attended a meeting of the Democratic county central committee at Santa Ana on Saturday afternoon, when the unerrified sachems began the cutting of a large and juicy political pie. Sagamore Head presided, and 40 members of the central committee were present. The first endorsement was that of Charley Overshiner of the Santa Ana Bulletin to be postmaster at Santa Ana, succeeding L. L. Shaw, whose term expires next year. Overshiner was the only candidate for the place, a number of other gentlemen whose names had been mentioned, having dropped out of the contest.
The postmastership at Huntington Beach developed a fight. There were several candidates and each had his adherants on hand. The names submitted were T H. DeLapp, G. S. Miles and D. G. Wettlin, the latter a member of the county committee.
After considerable oratory it was decided to settle the matter of endorsement by ballot. W. L. Duggan of Santa Ana and Fred Ahlborn of Anaheim were appointed tellers, and the first ballot resulted as follows:
Wettlin, 11; DeLapp, 5; Miles, 6; Warner, 1; blank, 1.
It was decided that the candidate receiving the lowest vote should be dropped from the list, and so Warner's name was dispensed with. The second ballot resulted: Wettlin, 11; DeLapp, 8; Myers, 5; blank, 1.
IN AND ABOUT COUNTY
Company Wants Too Much Dinero
City Trustee Stern, of Fullerton, for the committee, has reported that negotiations with the Fullerton Domestic Water Company have been unsuccessful and the committee has been discharged. The company offered to sell for $15,000, but would not consider any lower figure. The trustees were unwilling to offer a higher sum than was named by the estimating committee after an inventory of the property, $11,275.
Horse Killed by Train
E. J. Reeves lost a valuable horse one day last week when his team was struck by a Santa Fe train near Orange. Reeves, whose ranch is on the Anaheim road, was working in the field. He left his team standing while he attended to other work, and when he returned the team was gone. He found the horses at the railroad crossing, they having apparently wandered out onto the road and upon the track. The best horse of the team, valued at $300, had been killed. The other animal was lying in the ditch beside the track, but the owner got it up and found that it had been practically uninjured. The train stopped long enough to clear the track and enable the crew to take a report of the accident.
Will Elect Two School Trustees
Two high school trustees will be elected in the Fullerton union high school district tomorrow, April 4. L. P. Drake of Fullerton and J. G. Launer of La Habra are the retiring trustees and it is said they will not be candidates for re-election. At the request of friends, Attorney C. R. Allen announces that he will be a candidate for election as trustee. No one in La Habra has been mentioned in connection with this office but it is said friends of Theodore Enoch of Brea Canyon have requested him to an...

Our game animals are so valuable that the title to them has been retained by the state. Of late years, the right to take this game has been refused until a hunting license was secured. The law compelling a license has been one of the most popular that has even been enacted, not only in California, but in every state in which it has been adopted. Millions of dollars are invested in our state in guns and other hunting paraphernalia. This sum has been variously estimated as reaching into nine figures. It is perhaps safe to say that it is not less than twenty-five million dollars. Add to this sum the amount that the score of clubs throughout the state have invested in land and buildings and it will probably total over one hundred million dollars. There are sold in California alone every year twenty-eight million shotgun shells. Every industry benefits from the fact that there is game in our state. Railroads run special hunters' trains during the open seasons. The opening of the season is made the feature of window displays throughout the state. Hotels and resorts, even small towns, owe their very existence to the fact that they are established in a game country. To a great extent, the sturdiness of the American people can be attributed to their love for hunting and outdoor amusements. A state in which game flourishes attracts people all over the world. The value of land is increased by there being game upon it.
There are present in California so many different conditions of climate and topography that it is almost impossible to create a blanket fish and game law. When deer, for example, are in proper condition to be killed in one section, they are out of condition in another. Two years ago the legislature divided the state into game districts. Those selected were based upon artificial boundary lines without sufficient regard to natural conditions. In order to be satisfactory, districts must be based upon faunal, geographic and climatic conditions. In another part of this report will be found a suggestive districting scheme, which we believe will be far more satisfactory.
No one in La Habra has been mentioned in connection with this office but it is said friends of Theodore Enoch of Brea Canyon have requested him to announce his candidacy.
Mr. Sullivan of Placentia has leased his twenty-acre place to an eastern company for oil development on a good royalty and bonus.
Two Negroes Accused of Felony
Two criminal cases that have attained considerable notoriety were formally brought into the superior court on Friday afternoon when District Attorney West filed informations against Sam Henderson and Sam Nettles, both negroes. While each is charged with separate and distinct offenses, there is a certain bond of mutual interest in each case because Henderson was a devoted admirer of Nettles' stepdaughter, whom Nettles is accused of attempting to poison. Neither man was represented by attorney Nettles' case was the first to be called. He pleaded "not guilty" to the charge against him, and his trial was fixed for May 12. No motive has been made public in explanation of the charge against Nettles, or why he should desire the death of his stepdaughter. His home is at Fullerton. Henderson pleaded "guilty" to the charge filed against him, and asked for probation. Hearing on his request was set for today. Henderson is held for the alleged robbery of the residence of Earl D. Gray at Anaheim, and taking away goods valued at over $500. It is said that he was gathering the articles preparatory to asking Miss Nettles to become his bride and starting up housekeeping.
The Southern California Editorial Association will make a special train trip to the Yosemite May 15. More than 100 of the 150 members who own or edit newspapers have signified their intention of seeing the great national park together. The California Press Association members will visit Los Angeles, Long Beach and San Diego, arriving in a special train May 5. About 100 members are expected. Friend Richardson, state printer, is president.

are in proper condition to be killed in one section, they are out of condition in another.
The present condition of game in the state is far from satisfactory. It is possible to secure the bag limit of any variety of game in any part of the state only with a great deal of difficulty. This is not necessarily due to the lack of enforcement of our present game laws, but to the fact that the seasons are too long, not rightly placed, that the number of hunters has been increasing year by year, and to numerous other causes.
It is reported in many parts of the state that deer are on the increase. In view of the greater number of hunters, this is remarkable if it is correct; but it is doubtful whether careful investigation will uphold the current reports. There are probably killed in the state each year by hunters, 10,000 deer. Records were secured in 1911 of nearly 7,000, and it is safe to assume that at least 3,000 more were killed. It has been estimated that every mountain lion will kill at least 52 deer a year. Place the lion population at 250 and we can charge up 13,000 deer to lions. Coyotes and other varmints will without doubt bring the total number of deer killed up to the neighborhood of 30,000. In average years the natural death rate is not great; most of them

exclaimed from the rostrum: "What is a party without women?" and a coarse man in the rear of the hall shouted:
"A stag party."
"And what would this nation be without women?" retorted the speaker undismayed by the interruption.
"Stag nation" yelled the mere man, trying to square himself.
The power of example is one of the greatest forces in nature, and the beauty of it is, it's free. Jones had been talking of building for upwards of a year, but he never even budged until Smith's new house was done. Then he said: "Smith hasn't anything on me," and straight away he went and bought a bill of lumber of my boss and figured on the other materials.

In the relay race, Fullerton came first, Anaheim second and La Habra third.
The above named boys received ribbons and a beautiful banner was presented to the Fullerton school as the winner of the meet.
The next event to which the boys will be looking forward to is the championship in the class athletic runs, which are to be held in the school yards and the average records sent in before the 15th of April. Five banners are to be awarded for these events. The big day of the year, however, is the final meet for the whole county, which is to be held at Santa Ana, May 10. In the morning the spelling contests are to be held for the championship of the 7th and 8th grades, and in the afternoon the athletics will be conducted. Girls are also to have an opportunity to give an exhibition of school yard games and athletics.
The Triangle League now has 1,800 members in the county, all of whom have signed the agreement not to use tobacco, or liquor, and to discourage the use of profanity and bad language. Splendid testimonies are being given as to the value of the league in many ways.
