INVENTOR MORSE DIES IN NEW YORK EARLY ACCOUNT OF PASSING OF ONE OF WORLD'S GREATEST INVENTORS IN APRIL, 1872 FURNITURE STORE OF BACKS BROS. ESTABLISHED ON LOS ANGELES STREET (From Gazette March 16, 1872) Santa Ana—Mr. A. L. Bush, supervisor from Santa Ana, favors us with the following items from that flourishing city. B. F. Nimmo, road overseer for San Joaquin district, has had a substantial bridge built over Santiago creek, on the stage road, about two miles this side of Santa Ana. The bridge will cost when completed about $300. Messrs. Jordan and Greenleaf are each building residences at Santa Ana. Mr. Fickus is preparing to build on his farm near town. The plasterer has arrived to do the work on Mr. Dorman's new hotel building which will soon be ready for use. Mr. Spurgeon has received a large stock of general merchandise for his store. He has recently made a large addition to his facilities for business. Several land sales have been made, and the country is rapidly filling up with new settlers. Many vines and fruit trees have been put out, Mr. Casad alone having about 20 acres of new vineyard. We are requested to notify the horse Tuesday morning last. The building shook violently and we got out of bed as quick as we could to see how much Prof. Dean would charge us to let the Gazette establishment drop through the floor into his barber shop, but the danger was all over before we could get down stairs. (From Gazette April 6, 1872) Death of Prof. Morse The telegraph brings the sad news of the death of one of the most distinguished men of modern times; a man to whom America owes much of her greatness, and civilization is indebted for a large share of its progress in the 19th century. Prof. Samuel F. B. Morse died in the city of New York on the 3rd or 4th inst. (the date is not given) and was buried yesterday. He was near 82 years old, and lived to see his wonderful invention fully appreciated and used by all the world. Following is a telegram received at the telegraph office here: To all offices, all telegraph superintendents and managers in the United States and Canada—All that is mortal of the venerable and venerated father of the American telegraph system, Prof. Samuel F. B. Morse, will be consigned to the grave on Friday, April 5th. No expression or outward exhibition can give fitting evidence of the sorrow which his death has occasioned among those connected with the telegraph or within reach of its influence, not only in America, but throughout the world, but in token of respect to his memory some symbol of mourning should be exhibited in all telegraph offices on the day of his burial. A simple rose or bit or crape will suffice. Wm. Orton, President. The office has been placed in mourning. The following sketch of the great professor is interesting now. His Honor will stand no such nonsense—not if the court knows herself, and “she think she do.” (From Gazette March 23, 1872) A little boy has been killed by the explosion of a mince pie. The pie being surcharged with steam,—having no vent in the crust—exploded, throwing a considerable quantity of the scalding contents about the little unfortunate’s face and neck, burning him so badly as to throw him into convulsions, resulting in death. Figaro argues from this that an inspector of mince pies should be appointed whose duty it would be to examine all such dangerous commodities and test their strength. Figaro wants the position. Good bye, mince pie, if he gets hold of it. We Rise to Explain—We had a tooth-ache this week and found it a relief to tie up our jaw in a handkerchief to keep the cold air from striking it. This was all well enough but we are grieved to observe that our position has been misconstrued by some invidious persons, who persist in asking us if we have “had a head put on us.” Now we desire to notify all whom it may concern that we have not had a head put on us, and furthermore that we can punch the upper story off any misguided individual who has the temerity to propound the conundrum again. “Shoo fly.” Furniture Store — Messrs. Backs Bros. have purchased from ex-Gov. Downey the store building on the west side of Los Angeles street, formerly occupied by M. Calisher, and will open a furniture store therein. Advances on Wool—A prominent wool-buyer of Anaheim estimates that about $150,000 has been put in circulation this year in the southern part of Los Angeles county as advances to ed among those connected with the telegraph or within reach of its influence, not only in America, but throughout the world, but in token of respect to his memory some symbol of mourning should be exhibited in all telegraph offices on the day of his burial. Morse, the inventor of the electric telegraph, was lying at the point of death in New York City yesterday, and has probably passed away ere this. He was born in Charleston, Mass., in 1791, and graduated in Yale College in 1810. In early life he achieved a decided reputation as a painter, commencing his studies in England with Washington Allston, under whose charge he sailed from the United States in 1811. In 1822 he painted at New York a full-length portrait of Lafayette, who was at that time visiting this country. In 1832 he began the experiments which led to the invention of the telegraph. In 1837 he filed the caveat for his invention at Washington, and in 1840 perfected his patent. In 1844 the first line of telegraph in the United States was constructed between Baltimore and Washington. Since that time Prof. Morse has seen the system established in every part of the world. A few months since, in his 81st year, on the occasion of the erection of a statue in his honor in New York, he transmitted with his own hand a greeting to the fraternity of telegraphers throughout the United States. Who Is Helen Blazes?—We heard her name called last Monday by a man who had been deceived by some misrepresentation connected with the celebration of the first of April. (From Gazette April 13, 1872) A Furniture Store—Our community is at length supplied with something we long needed, viz., a good furniture store. Two young and reliable business men, Messrs. F. and J. Backs, have opened a store and factory in the building formerly occupied by Mr. Calisher on Los Angeles street, and are filling it with a good stock of furniture of all kinds. Mattresses and other articles are manufactured here and as these gentlemen are their own workmen, they can guarantee the quality of their goods and sell cheaper than any other establishment. Call and see them. Section 1. Throughout town to mean the junction of the east curb lines of the interstate southeast corner shall be mean the junction of the east curb lines of the interstate southwest corner shall be mean the junction of the west curb lines of the streets, and the northwest corner be understood to mean the junction north and west curb lines seecting streets. The city lie understood to mean the city City of Anaheim. Section 2. The grades in shall be understood to be feet above a datum plane low a standard bench mark door plate at the northwest Metz Block as heretofore Ordinance No. 98 of the City entitled, "An Ordinance on Datum Plane and design Marks therein." The grade on street from the southerly East Center街 is hereby as follows: At the intersection East street and East Broadway northeast corner shall be fifty-seven and 90-100; the senior shall be one hundred fifty-seven and 50-100; west corner shall be one hundred seventy-eight and 70-100; at the South East street and East northeast corner shall be dred fifty-nine and 90-100; corner shall be one hundred seventy-two and 40-100; corner shall be one hundred twenty-one and 50-100; west corner shall be one hundred ninety-one and 70-100. The west East street at the northerly yard Lot H1 shall be one hundred eighty-one and 80-100. At the intersection East street and East San Francisco northeast corner shall be dred sixty-two and 40-100; corner shall be one hundred forty-five and 45-100; the south and northwest corner shall be ready established by Section No. 210 of the City of Anaheim. (From Gazette March 30, 1872) Indian Affray—Two Indians named Vicente Valdeso and Maria Pina were stabbed seriously and it is thought fatally, by another Indian named Jose Maria on Sunday afternoon, the 24th inst., at the rancheria near Pedro Lopez's, at the southwest corner of town. Jose Maria was immediately afterward discovered leaving town in company of another Indian, Jesus Perez, and, strong suspicion resting on the latter, both were arrested. Not sufficient evidence was however adduced to hold Perez and he was accordingly discharged, but proof against Maria was very direct and he was committed and sent to Los Angeles on Tuesday on a charge of assault to commit murder. The wounds of Valdeso are such that it is feared he will not survive. It is said that Valdeso is the same Indian who, it is believed, killed the young German, Frederick Rupp, and if this be the case, it is the matter of poetical justice that the Indian is now lying at the point of death in the same hut and in the same bunk where his victim died over a year ago. Earthquake—Quite a smart shock of an earthquake aroused us from our slumbers at 25 minutes before 5 o'clock Quick Time—The stage from Capistrano arrived last Thursday morning at 8 o'clock. Charlie rises early and the man who gets ahead of him will have to sit up all night. Married—At Santa Ana, April 14th, by the Rev. R. C. Freyer, W. H. Spurgeon to Miss Jennie English. A New Agent—Our enterprising fellow-citizen, Richard Melrose, has just been appointed local agent of the Union Mutual Life Insurance Company of Maine. Goodman & Rimpau—Although established so short a time in business this popular firm already find their accommodations too limited, and have just added largely to their facilities for storing and selling goods. They receive by every steamer additions to their stock. A Good Sign—Of a failing business man is the withdrawal of his advertisement from the newspaper. When a man is ashamed of his own dealings and knows that he has lost the confidence of the public he naturally dislikes to see his name in print, withdraws his advertisement, and retires to a back seat to give place to some better firm. The grades in this ordinance shall be understood to be the distance between a datum plane 152.32 feet below a standard bench mark on the iron door plate at the northwest corner of Metz Block as heretofore established by Ordinance No. 98 of the City of Anaheim, entitled "An Ordinance establishing a Datum Plane and designing Bench Marks therein." Section 3.
