BLOTTING TURKEY FROM MAP OF EUROPE FORETOLD IN BIBLE PROPHECY MORE THAN TWO THOUSAND YEARS AGO GREAT POWERS OF EUROPE LOOK WITH JEALOUSY UPON OTTOMAN TERRITORY (Contributed to the Gazette.) Turkey is soon to be blotted from the map of Asia as well as of Europe. The complete absorption of this Mohammedan kingdom was foretold nearly 2,000 years ago. The prophecy is in the Bible. The exact day when the Sultan would cease to reign independent of foreign interference was also foretold. That prophecy was fulfilled to the very letter 62 years ago. It is the knowledge of these facts which causes thousands of Protestants to watch with more than ordinary interest the progress of the war and peace negotiations between Turkey and the Allied Balkan States. The Apocalypse, or Revelation, speaks of Turkey, and although symbolic language is used, it is not difficult for those familiar with history to understand it. The prophecy speaks of seven angels with trumpets. These were blown in succession. The events which transpired after the blowing of each trumpet are graphically described. The rise of the Ottoman empire was announced by the sounding of the fifth trumpet, spoken of in Revelation the ninth chapter. Mohammedan power. An ultimatum was drawn up, to be presented to the Pasha of Egypt. The Sultan offered him the hereditary government of Egypt, and of Syria from the Gulf of Suez to the Lake of Tiberias, besides the province of Acre for life. Mohammed was to evacuate the Sultan's territory and to return the fleet. If he refused to do this the four powers agreed to take the matter into their own hands. Thus it was evident that the moment this ultimatum should be placed in the hands of Mohammed Ali, the disposal of the Sultan's affairs would be, from that time and onward, in the hands of the great powers. Rifat Bey was sent by the Sultan on a government steamer to Alexandria, where he was to present the ultimatum to the Pasha. It was presented to him August 11, 1840. Thus came to an end on the exact day foretold in the prophecy, the independent rule of Turkey. The prophecy calling for the extinction of Turkey is in Revelation 16:12. It reads: "The sixth angel poured out his vial upon the great river Euphrates and the water thereof was dried up, that the way of the kings of the east might be prepared." It cannot be argued effectually that this is to be taken to mean the literal river Euphrates, for the drying up was to prepare the way for the kings of the East. The Euphrates offers no effectual barrier to the movement of these armies. It is only about 1,400 miles long, about a third of the size of the Mississippi. History tells us that Cyrus turned the whole river from its channel while besieging Babylon. It has never proved a hindrance in any war fought in its territory. Further, it would be as necessary to dry up the river Tigris as the Euphrates, for that is nearly as large and runs parallel. Mohammedanism is referred to as "smoke" out of the "bottomless pit." The Saracens and Turks are described as "locusts." The Bible says of them: "It was commanded them that they should not hurt the grass of the earth, neither any green thing, neither any tree, but only those men which have not the seal of God in their foreheads." We look to history for a fulfillment of the prophecy, and find that Abubekr, the successor of Mohammed, commanded the Arabian tribes to fight without turning their backs, and added: "Let not your victory be stained with the blood of women and children. Destroy no palm-trees, nor burn any fields of corn. Cut down no fruit trees... As you go you will find some religious persons who live retired in monasteries... Let them alone and neither kill them nor destroy their monasteries. And you will find another sort of people that belong to the synagogue of Santan, who have shaven crowns; be sure you cleave their skulls." The prophecy of Revelation goes on to say that these Saracens and Turks were to "torment" men for "five months." Using the year-day principle, which is used throughout the Bible where symbolic prophecies are given, and with 30 days to the month, according to the Jewish reckoning of time, we have 150 years. If the prophecy is correct, we would expect history to show that these Arabian tribes did "torment" men for 150 years. And it is exactly so. On July 27, 1299, more than 1,000 years after the prophecy was written, Othman, founder of the Ottoman empire, invaded the territory of Nicomedia, and from that time until July 27, 1449, harrassed and worried the Eastern empire of Rome. The 15th verse of this same chapter in Revelation says the angels of war were released. The prophecy says they were prepared for "an hour, a day, a month and a year." Using the Jewish year of 360 days, and counting a day for a year, we have 391 years and 15 days of actual time. Thus the whole period which the Mohammedan would reign in Eastern Roman territory in river Euphrates, for the drying up was to prepare the way for the kings of the East. Further, it would be as necessary to dry up the river Tigris as the Euphrates, for that is nearly as large, and runs parallel with it. On the other hand, water is used symbolically in other parts of the Bible to denote nations, or governments. One instance is in Isaiah 8:7, where the King of Assyria is called a river. Revelation 9:14 speaks of angels being "bound in the great river Euphrates." It is difficult to believe that the Euphrates in this verse means other than the Turkish power. In fulfilment of the prophecy which tells of Turkey's end, we see that kingdom being "dried up" before our eyes, while the great powers of Europe look with jealousy upon Ottoman territory, particularly the Bosphorus and Dardanelles, the gateway from the Mediterranean to the Black Sea. FRANK A. COFFIN Oakland, Cal., Dec. 24, 1912. STATE ROAD WORK HELD UP Failure to Dispose of Bonds May Necessitate Increased Interest Either a way must be found to dispose of the State bonds which have been repeatedly offered without bids, or it will be necessary to call a special election to authorize a change in the interest rate on the bonds or the condition requiring them to be sold at par. The only other alternative is to drop much important work and wait for the future to determine whether the market will absorb the California issue of 4 per cent at par. The announcement by State Highway Engineer Fletcher, in Sacramento this week, that a million dollars of work on the new State roads is being held up under the $18,000,000 bond issue serves to indicate the acuteness of the situation, adn there are other bonds than the salable, but which must be sold shortly unless work which is imperatively required before the opening of the Panama Canal and of the exposition suffers. The State board of control will be able to provide some funds for emergencies out of the State treasury, but this is taking it out of one pocket to was tide land; hence and not Federal law with the Alamitos Law batting a claim on the heim Landing Company ground was mineralization of State records mitos Company to o that it had no title. Registrar Buren nolo contendere posi a clear title for Ord. The 15th verse of this same chapter in Revelation says the angels of war were released. The prophecy says they were prepared for "an hour, a day, a month and a year." Using the Jewish year of 360 days, and counting a day for a year, we have 391 years and 15 days of actual time. Thus the whole period which the Mohammedan would reign in Eastern Roman territory independent of the interference of any foreign power, would be just this length of time. This added to July 27, 1449, brings us to August 11, 1840. We are to look to that date, then, for the end of Turkish independence. History shows that for several years before 1840 the Sultan had been embroiled in a war with Mohammed Ali, Pasha of Egypt. In 1838 the foreign embassadors restrained the trouble between the Sultan and his Egyptian vassal. But in 1839 hostilities began again. They continued until Mohammed at last took the Sultan's fleet in battle, and cut up and destroyed his army. An idea of the demoralized condition of the Sultan's fighting force can be gathered from the fact that when the war was resumed, in August of that year, he had only two first-rates and three frigates as a remnant of his once-powerful fleet. Mohammed positively refused to surrender the captured ships, declaring that if the powers interfered and attempted to take them, he would set fire to them. It was evident that if a foreign power did not interfere Mohammed would soon become master of the Sultan's throne. England, Russia, Austria and Prussia interposed in 1840. The Sultan accepted their intervention, thus voluntarily surrendering the matter into their hands. The State board of control will be able to provide some funds for emergencies out of the State treasury, but this is taking it out of one pocket to put it into another, and does not solve the problem. Chairman Burton A. Towne of the State Highway Commission is inclined to believe that a way out will develop. He says that the present lack of a market for the California 4 per cents is due to the Eastern situation. With issues of 4½ per cents offered by the Balkan States, the 4's from California must take a back seat for the time being, but with the clearing up of the Balkan situation there is likely to be an improvement in the bond market. While he advances the idea only tentatively, he is inclined to think that a way may be found, if necessary, to sell the bonds for cash to contractors on State highway work, in proportion to their undertakings. State Treasurer Roberts s working upon another plan of his own to sell the State highway bonds and the San Francisco harbor improvement bonds, $23,000,000 altogether, in one lot. He may not succeed and it is within the bounds of probability that the question will have to be referred to the legislature this winter. The Ganahl Lumber Company is putting out a very attractive calendar, showing a Los Angeles park scene in winter, and is presenting its many friends and customers with them. ORD WINS TITLE TO LAND Gains Possession of Valuable Real Estate at Anaheim Landing After many months of hard fought litigation before Registrar Frank Buren of the Federal Land Office, J. C. Ord last week won a $100,000 victory. It carried with it title to forty acres across Anaheim Landing from Bay City, which he filed on in 1907 with Valentine script, but which was claimed by the Alamitos Land Company, and the Anaheim Landing Mining & Development Company. Valentine was a big ranch owner. He filed, proved and eventually got title to a large government acreage. Later the land he had developed was sought by the government. Valentine was loath to part with it, but was finally induced by the tender to him of the script since known in his name. A large part of the script was secured from Valentine by Ord, and he straightway filed on the Anaheim Landing acreage. About this time agents of the Anaheim Landing Mining & Development Company appeared on the scene and filed on the acreage as mineral land. They declared gold could be developed and putting in a shaft took out a considerable quantity of what they called ore. The Alamitos Land Company claimed the land under the contention that it was tide land; hence subject to State and not Federal law. Ord combined with the Alamitos Land Company, combatting a claim on the part of the Anaheim Landing Company that the ground was mineral bearing. Inspection of State records caused the Alamitos Company to offer a stipulation that it had no title. Registrar Buren stated that this nolo contendere position amounted to a clear title for Ord. THE DIVINING ROD The United States Geological Survey states in Water-Supply Paper 255, entitled "Underground Waters for Farm Use," just reissued, that no appliance, either mechanical or electric, has yet been devised that will detect water in places where plain common sense and close observation will not show its presence just as well. Numerous mechanical devices have been proposed for detecting the presence of underground water, ranging in complexity from the simple forked branch of witch hazel, peach, or other tree to more or less elaborate mechanical or electric contrivances. Many of the operators of these devices, especially those who use the home-cut forked branch, are entirely honest in the belief that the working of the rod is influenced by agencies—usually regarded as electric currents following underground streams of water—that are entirely independent of their own bodies, and many people have implicit faith in their own and others' ability to locate underground water in this way. In experiments with a rod made from a forked branch it seemed to turn downward at certain points independent of the operator's will, but more complete tests showed that this downturning resulted from slight and, until watched for, unconscious muscular action, the effects of which were communicated through the arms and wrists to the rod. No movement of the rod from causes outside of the body could be detected, and it soon became obvious that the view held by other men of science is correct—that the operation of the "divining rod" is generally due to unconscious movements of the body or of the muscles of the hand. The experiments made show gions where water flows in well-defined channels are no more successful than those dependent on mere guess. In was tide land; hence subject to State and not Federal law. Brumagim was in town this week from Garden Grove, where he has one of the best orchards of young walnut trees in the county. Mr. Brumagim was formerly an orange grower of Redlands, but came to Orange county five years ago to take up the culture of walnuts. He was a tenderfoot in the industry and was informed by some of the old-timers that he would reap no profits from his orchard, until his trees were 15 years old. He surprised them when he harvested last year a ton of first-class softshells from five acres of six-year-old trees. This year he gathered a ton and a quarter from the same area, and expects two tons next year. He takes the best of care of his orchard and contemplates going extensively into In the Superior Court Of the County of Orange, State of California In the matter of the Estate of T. B.
