McLaughlin, her husband, at Venice, on October 6. She is so well satisfied that the disappearance was a ruse to make her think he was drowned, that she has sworn to a complaint charging him with deserting her and her children. Louis Spennee is one of the newcomers of this region who is pleased with his new location. He recently came here from Perris Valley and purchased a 20-acre ranch on Placentia avenue, of Dayton Ward, which is partly in citrus fruit. Mr. Spennee, who was in town Monday, thinks the climate here is ideal, and he is well satisfied. Gus Hansen is lying at the point of death at his home at Hansen station. Chapline and Deputy District Attorney Brown, of Orange, were Sunday guests of Dr. and Mrs. J. W. Utter. Gus Wurdinger and S. Simberg, of Newport, spent several days in town the past week with friends before going to Calexico where they will open a studio. C. M. Kemp has accepted a position with Edmiston's grocery as solicitor and is on the job early and late, his previous experience making him a valuable acquisition to the firm. Hugo Strodhoff entertained members of the 4-4 club at his home on North Lemon street last Wednesday when progressive euchre was a feature of a very delightful evening. The ladies first prize, a box of candies, was won by Mrs. Melrose, and the gentleman's prize, a box of cigars, was captured by Wm. McLaughlin. Mr. and Mrs. Franz Jauernik celebrated their silver wedding anniversary on Sunday evening by entertaining a large company of friends at a sumptuous supper at Turner Hall. The worthy couple were married in Austria and for a number of years have been residents of this city. They were recipients of many handsome silver gifts... Mr. Hansen contracted a severe cold on election day when he went to the polls to cast his ballot. He had been ailing for six months past with a complication of internal disorders and the cold developed into a severe attack of pneumonia. Four physicians were at his bedside the first of the week and yesterday it was stated that his condition was critical. C. M. McGuire, of Fort Morgan, Colo., was in town one day last week, a guest of his nephew, J. W. Duckworth. The two had not had the pleasure of meeting in 51 years, but had no difficulty in recognizing one another at the railroad station. Mr. McGuire is located temporarily at Orange, with Mrs. McGuire. They will make their permanent home in Southern California. An unusually interesting meeting of the Ladies’ Aid Society of the Methodist church was held at the home of Mrs. E. H. Adams Thursday afternoon. About 50 members and guests of the society were present. Plans for the coming year were discussed and several new lines of work were adopted. After the business meeting delicious refreshments were served. Mrs. Adams was assisted in entertaining by Mesdames Beekman, Borth and Bogue. Mrs. Lucy Baxter is looking for the return of her three sons, Oliver, Henry and Lee, who have been four years in the American navy. Their terms of enlistment expire on the 16th inst., and they will probably arrive here within a few days. The boys have been recently on the cruiser Albany in Asiatic waters. Mr. and Mrs. H. H. MeNeill have returned from Phoenix, Ariz., after an absence of two months, and are at home at their fine walnut ranch on the Garden Grove road. They were called to Phoenix by the advent of a little grandchild who is a picture of his grandfather in a thousand different ways. Both declare him to be the cutest little baby in Arizona and they expect him to bring his parents out shortly to San Diego, where they will take up their permanent residence. Mac is greatly elated over Wilson’s election, and his only disturbing thought is occasioned by the fact that his thoroughbred bulldog, Freckels, was stolen during his absence. Miss Ruth Usher, sister of Mrs. Richard Burmester, formerly of this city, was run over by an automobile in Los Angeles one day last week as she alighted from a street car. Miss Usher was painfully hurt but early reports that she had met fatal injuries were unfounded. She was picked up and carried to a hospital where it was found she was severely bruised and shaken up. She was later taken to the home of her sister where she is recovering. Good old Santa Claus has made his first visit to Anaheim and has established permanent headquarters at the 5, 10 to 35c store. He has left a complete line of toys, books, games, holiday china, wagons, doll buggies, etc., for the children of Anaheim to make selection from.
