HILL’S ESTATE DEVELOPS LAWSUIT
CONTEST FILED IN SUPERIOR COURT BY CHILDREN OF FIRST WIFE
SENSATIONAL ALLEGATION MADE AND A BITTER LEGAL FIGHT IN PROSPECT
A sensational suit has been filed in the superior court in which W. R. Hill, Annie and Jennie Hill and Elizabeth Aldrich are plaintiffs and Mrs. Blanche L. Hill defendant. The suit is brought by plaintiffs for an order of court allowing to each a one-eighteenth interest in the estate of William Hill, who died at his ranch west of town, July 30th, of the current year, and that the property left by William J. Hill shall be declared as belonging to the estate of said Hill.
Briefly stated the trouble is that plaintiffs, who are children of William J. Hill by his first wife, were cut out of what they consider their share of their father’s estate by a will in which all the property was given to Mrs. Blanche Hill, Hill’s second wife, to whom Hill was married 21 years ago. The property consists of 80 acres of land valued at $40,000. The complaint alleges that this property was purchased with community money owned by William J. Hill and his first wife, the mother of plaintiffs before the death of the first wife.
On January 20, 1910, Hill made a deed to his second wife of all of this property, and placed the deed in a safety deposit vault in the First Na-
CELERY OUTLOOK IS GOOD
First Shipment of New Crop to Move East Early Next Month
The first carloads of 1912-13 celery from this county will move toward the east early next month. The crop is in excellent condition, and the prospects for a fine crop and good prices are encouraging.
G. W. Moore, manager of the Celery Growers’ Association, states that as yet the celery has been quite free from cut worms, and though the warm weather of last week is not beneficial there is every reason to look for a crop of good quality.
Some celery will be shipped this week from some acreage planted near Long Beach. None of the association celery of this county, however, is likely to be shipped before November 10. There are about 1,400 acres planted to the crop in Orange county. Last year was an exceptionally good year for the vegetable that made the county’s lowlands famous. The best prices in the history of the industry were secured. Reports from the east that the crop there is not up to standard encourage the growers here to hope that the coming season will also prove an exceptional year. The acreage this year is 500 or 600 acres less than last year, some of the celery growers having turned their lands to the growing of sugar beets. The crop this year will probably bring in $250,000.
WET WINTER PREDICTED
Many Signs Pointing to Downpour, So Some Weather Prophets Say
Local weather prophets are predicting an unusually early fall, and early rains and colder winter than usual for this section of California.

all the property was given to Mrs. Blanche Hill, Hill's second wife, to whom Hill was married 21 years ago. The property consists of 80 acres of land valued at $40,000. The complaint alleges that this property was purchased with community money owned by William J. Hill and his first wife, the mother of plaintiffs before the death of the first wife.
On January 20, 1910, Hill made a deed to his second wife of all of this property, and placed the deed in a safety deposit vault in the First National Bank here with the instructions that his wife should be given it after his death.
According to the complaint Mrs. Hill lost no time after her husband died in getting possession of the deed, as she went the same day and secured the deed and brought it here and had it recorded.
The complaint further alleges that defendant, Mrs. Blanche L. Hill, came to work for William J. Hill as a domestic and when later Hill married her, she used every effort possible to estrange the children from their father and beat and abused them in the attempt to force them to leave home.
Further allegations of the complaint are that Hill was unduly influenced by his second wife and that when he made the deed giving the property to her he was not competent to act.
Incidentally there were born to Hill eight children by his second wife, and the plaintiffs ask that an equal division of the property be ordered by the court, giving to each a one-eighteenth share in the estate.
Mrs. Hill denies the allegations made against her and has employed counsel to protect her interests in the case.
PELICAN CAUSED SHORT CIRCUIT
Two Huge Birds in Santa Ana Canyon Strike Ten Thousand Volt Wire
Two huge pelicans that in their flight Monday night came in contact with the 10,000 volt transmission wire of the Southern California Edison Company, in Santa Ana Canyon, short circuited the line and put the lighting system out of commission for a short time. It was not known what happened until the next morning when a crew detailed for the purpose of repairing breaks in the line arrived at a point in the Canyon near the intake of the Anaheim Union Water Company it was discovered that two huge pelicans had collided with the line and caused the damage.
One of the birds was killed and the other dazed by the shock and this one was found walking around in a circle.
WET WINTER PREDICTED
Many Signs Pointing to Downpour, So Some Weather Prophets Say
Local weather prophets are predicting an unusually early fall, and early rains and colder winter than usual for this section of California.
Much of the evidence at hand foretelling the hard winter comes from the Indians in an up-country district. Several travelers returning from the hills report that the red men point to many indications in nature to prove their claims. Notable among the so-called proofs are the following observations by the Indians:
The leaves began to fall early this month.
There are yet green pine burrs on the trees, and these have not fallen.
The ripe burrs are filled with nuts.
The beavers in the mountain section are leaving the beds of the creeks and are building their homes high up on the banks of the streams.
The badgers, which generally stay in the woods during the winters, if they are mild, are going into the mountain valleys.
These and many other signs, it is claimed, point to a severe winter.
An inevitable sign, it is claimed, of early and hard rains, is the flight of wild ducks at this season of the year. For several weeks the birds have been flying southward. It is stated that for this to occur so early in the year is unprecedented.
Mariners say that Dumbarton point, which is on the coast near San Francisco, stands out like a pyramid, so clear is the atmosphere. The men of the sea say that this portends a hard wet winter. Usually the point is clouded in fogs. To cinch the matter for the weather prophets that a hard winter is on the way, several of the local farmers point to the fact that turkeys which have been killed recently all have a dark colored breastbone. This is an old superstition which comes from New England and in which many have great faith. It is claimed that when the Thanksgiving bird has a light colored breastbone, mild weather is sure to prevail, but when that part of the fowls' anatomy takes on a dark hue the opposite is the case.

WIN BASKET BALL GAME
Anaheim High School Boys Put It Over on the Downey Team
Members of the boys' basket ball team of the Anaheim High School went to Downey Tuesday evening to play their first game of the season. The two teams were pretty evenly matched and at the end of the first half the score stood 10-10. During the second half the Anaheim boys would forge ahead but the Downey players would "come back" and even up the score. The Anaheim team finally secured a lead and held it until the final whistle blew. Final score, Anaheim 19, Downey 17. This was Downey's fourth game and Anaheim's first for the season. Both teams played good ball and a fast game is reported. The Anaheim players were: Forwards—Beebe, Hemmerling; center, Elliott; guards, Miller, Fergus.
A return game is scheduled with Downey for next Tuesday afternoon at the local high school grounds. A swift game is expected. All are invited.
BUY COUNTY FARM
72 Acres at West Orange Purchased From Dawn Land Company
The Board of Supervisors on Tuesday entered into an agreement for the purchase of 72 acres at West Orange for a poor farm and site for the county hospital. The price to be paid it $24,-250. The purchase is to be made from the Dawn Land Company, composed of W. A. Zimmerman, J. A. Nunn, H.W. Lewis and R. J. Thompson, all of Santa Ana.
The supervisors have been favorable to the location, thinking it convenient to Santa Ana, Orange and Anaheim. Negotiations were taken up for a price lower than named in the offer. A conference was held with Lewis and Nunn. Mr. Nunn met with the supervisors, and the agreement to close the deal was reached.
The property lies at the west end of West Chapman street on the Anaheim road. It is west of the Southern Pacific tracks, south of the Garden Grove road and is joined on the south by the Orange sewer farm.
Deputy District Attorney Koepsel was asked to prepare a resolution advertising the intention of the supervisors to buy the land.

Indicated by Increased Number of Cars Necessary to Move Freight
Evidence of the prosperity of the Western States is furnished by figures made known by the Southern Pacific Company as to the number of freight cars loaded this season. The average loading on the lines of this company in California is greater by 6,200 cars per month over the same period last year, or about 200 cars per day.

The contrivance is in the shape of a small funnel which is placed in the keyhole of the front door. If the key comes inside the mouth of the funnel, the day is saved, and the key slips quietly into the lock. Railroads have been heavily pressed for rolling stock because of this sudden demand for service. Only the hearty co-operation on the part of the shippers has made it possible to keep all the traffic moving. The large fruit firms have instructed their agents not to delay or divert shipments unnecessarily and have issued circulars to this effect, for the principal difficulty has arisen from movements in the Eastern states.
The Pacific Fruit Express, according to an announcement made by President Sproule of the Southern Pacific Company, has ordered 2,000 more refrigerator cars of the latest design. This number, together with the lot of 1,000 only recently ordered, will bring up this line's total equipment to 13,100 cars, representing an investment of over $20,000,000, all to be available on July 1st of next year, in time for the 1913 fruit movement.
The new cars are designed especially for the fruit packages peculiar to California and the west and will load easily and economically. They will be fitted with Bohn collapsible tanks and a modern system of heat insulation.
GLENN MARTIN HOME AGAIN
Santa Ana Aviator National Figure as Master of Air Craft
Glenn Martin, the Santa Ana aviator, who during the past year has become a world figure in the science of aerial navigation, became the first aviator of America at the international meet at Chicago recently when he scored more points than any other aviator present. He was selected to fly the American machine in the race for the Gordon Bennett cup, the international trophy, won this year by Vedrines for France. The $15,000 Burgess built for the race was not air-worth, and, though Martin took the job of rebuilding it, he could not straighten it out in time for the race. The Santa Ana man surpassed all others in the accuracy in landing test and quick starting. He was able, repeatedly, to ascend a thousand feet and, returning, land within 10 feet of his starting point. This performance astonished the foreign aviators who
