The Weekly Gazette. ESTABLISHED 1870 Henry Kuchel Editor and Proprietor SUBSCRIPTION.....$1.50 Per Year Six Months.....$1.00 Three Months.....50 Cts. Entered at the Anaheim Postoffice as second-class matter. CREDIT FOR THE FAIR The Taft publicity bureau has issued the following statement in reply to the 2000 word telegram that governor Johnson read at his Los Angeles meeting and which purported to come from Theodore Roosevelt: "This purported Roosevelt telegram, in which he takes the credit for bringing the Panama-Pacific exposition to California, is another subterfuge to deceive voters. It is in line with the policy Roosevelt and his satellites have pursued throughout this campaign of throwing dust into the eyes of the voters. It is a palpable deception, since Roosevelt had no more to do with birthing the Panama Pacific exposition to San Francisco than the man in the moon. In fact, it was generally understood that he was discredited with the powers responsible for securing the exposition and no one looked to him to help. "It might further be stated that governor Johnson and the men who are making such a vicious fight against President Taft are entitled to little credit for bringing the exposition to San Francisco. At Washington Johnson held aloof from the San Francisco delegation and maintained a superior attitude during the time the controversy for the site was being waged. In fact it can be stated without fear of contradiction that the presence of Johnson and his co-terie in Washington was a distinct..." governor Johnson and the men who are making such a vicious fight against President Taft are entitled to little credit for bringing the exposition to San Francisco. At Washington Johnson held aloof from the San Francisco delegation and maintained a superior attitude during the time the controversy for the site was being waged. In fact it can be stated without fear of contradiction that the presence of Johnson and his co-terie in Washington was a distinct disadvantage to the exposition boosters, as instead of giving effective aid he spent most of his time talking insurgency and what he did to redeem San Francisco. "The truth of the matter is, and this fact cannot be repeated too often, that but for the timely and salutary assistance of President Taft there would be no Panama Pacific exposition for San Francisco, and there would today be gloom and despair where there is now hope, courage, and the prospect of many years of prosperity. When President Taft learned that New Orleans had a majority of votes in congress for the exposition he got busy. He sent for several of his friends who were members of the senate and house of representatives and told them that San Francisco was his choice and that public policy dictated that the city on the extreme western end of the continent should have the honor of furnishing entertainment for the world on the opening of the Panama canal. It was the prompt and generous act of the president that gave San Francisco the Panama Pacific exposition, and to Mr. Taft alone, so far as national politics is concerned in the transaction, belongs the credit." Teddy Tetzlaff, winner of the Santa Monica sprint, is an Olive boy, and was formerly engaged in the flour mill at that point. He has been in the racing business for some years, and drove a Fiat car in the Los Angeles to Phoenix roadrace last winter. In the opinion of many, he would have won that contest, but for going in the ditch with his machine in the road east of San Diego. He was badly injured and did not finish the race. One report reaching here from Santa Monica on Saturday evening was that Tetzlaff had been fatally injured by the overturning of his car. He won the race in a driving finish, breaking the world's record. A.U.W.Co. MEETING Minutes of Adjourned Session, Held Monday Afternoon Anaheim, Cal., May 6, 1912. GETTING MARRIED "WHILE YOU WAIT" Mrs. Konig returned last week from San Francisco, where she was called some weeks ago by the death of her aged father. Paris matrimonial agencies are peculiar, if we can believe the story of a young man who was shaved, dressed, presented, married, banqueted and supplied with a requisite number of uncles and aunts in the space of three weeks. He was fresh from the provinces. "We can certainly get you married in two weeks," said the matrimonial agent; "what kind of a bride would you like?" "Oh, so and so." Very well. We have one who may please. What kind would you like the mother-in-law to be? "Oh, so and so." Well, this one is just the thing. The mother-in-law was fond of the feasts and banquets, and the bride-groom flattered her taste in that direction. The wedding was at once prepared. "Where are your papers?" "Oh, I do not know." Well, we know of an agency that sets all the necessary papers." The young man consented. "Who is your best man?" "I have not a soul in Paris." "We will supply you with one. What kind of a wedding feast? How many carriages?" "I have no idea." Then we shall refer you to another agency which attends to all the ceremonials. They will see to sending out letters of invitations, have a sufficient number of guests, landaus, motor cars, flowers, etc. Now as to the bride's trousseau. We can recommend an agency that supplies the orange blossoms. What about relatives? "Must there be some relatives at the wedding?" "Certainly." But I have none in Paris." Then we can supply you with all of them. A father costs 20 francs, a mother 20 francs, and uncles, aunts, brothers and sisters, somewhat less." Very well, let me have as many as I need. The young man, when it was all over had an enormous bill to pay, but he declares that really his wedding was one of the most stirring in Paris, and they were driven to the most fashionable church. In conclusion... There's The Christian Church. Come and worship with us next Lord's day. Bible school at 9:45, communion and preaching at 11. Morning theme, "The Abiding Things." In conclusion, he was given the address of another agency, which undertakes to settle all conjugal differences. Rev. Paul G. Stevens of Santa Ana, the home missionary for the Los Angeles Presbytery, spent the last week in the Commonwealth district. He found things so encouraging that a meeting was called in the schoolhouse for last Sunday and interested Anaheim people were invited. Rev. Mitchell and a dozen young people of this city responded to the call and found over a score of enthusiastic persons at the school house. A lively meeting was held and it resulted in the immediate organization of a Union Sunday school. The first officers are Mrs. W. L. Baldridge, superintendent; Miss Grace Barmich, secretary, and J. S. Brook, treasurer. Meetings will be held every Sabbath at 2:30. Some fine day instead of the Commonwealth Bible school we shall hear of the Commonwealth Church.
