Johnny Walls was at Newport on Sunday afternoon and witnessed the drowning of William Steele, a fisherman, who fell overboard from a yacht half a mile from shore. The body was not recovered. Judge Howard attended the Iowa picnic at Eastlake park on the 22d,and after the big feed found time during the afternoon to make a side-trip to Vernon, where he looked up points and authorities on the referendum and recall. Manager Sandilands of the fruit association has shipped sixty cars of oranges to market this season. Owing to blizzards east markets are poor,and fruit is being held back.With return of favorable weather prices will pick up and shipments sent out in large volume. John Hartung is the first candidate for city office to file his petition with the city clerk. Mr. Hartung is a candidate for city treasurer. His verification deputy is Otto Storm, and the petition bears the necessary number of signatures. The city treasurer's position is a plumworth fighting for, and Mr. Hartung believes in getting into the field early and staying late. Socialist candidates for city offices filed their nomination petitions on Saturday. Danforth was in town this week from Los Angeles looking after the interests of a sewer-pipe company. Mr. Danforth is furnishing pipe for the sewer system now in course of construction here, and will in the near future be ready to ship in pipe for service connections. He left for Redlands, where he is interested in sewer-pipe contracts. E. A. Stockslager, a Santa Ana capitalist, was a business visitor in town on Tuesday. Mr. Stockslager said in reference to the Amalgamated motors concern that it looked as if the Santa Ana merchants and manufacturers association had one slipped over it. County Clerk Williams this week received papers in a case transferred from Los Angeles for trial in this county. R. B. Flint is plaintiff and J.Ralph Carhart defendant. Flint asks for judgment of $11,929.54. The plaintiff has attached 12,750 shares of stock in the U.S.Liquid Air and Oxygen company. L.Nemetz who is one of the practical jokers of the city announces that he has serious intentions of going into politics and standing for justice of the peace. He has retired from business, and his health is not so robust as in years gone by, and he thinks a seat on the judicial bench will prove a fitting climax to a long and honorable career. Santitos Carrisosa was cut in the palm of the left hand by John Manser in a fight on Clementina street near Oak on Saturday evening at 10:30 o'clock.Manser made his escape.Carrisosa has a bad knife wound,and blood poisoning is feared.On Monday he made a statement of the fight to Judge Howard and Officers Kellenberger and Germann.Santos Carrisosa,father of the injured man,was advised to lay the case before District Attorney West.A charge of assault with a deadly weapon has been lodged against Manser. The sewer system of Anaheim is practically completed with the exception of that corner bounded on the south by Center and on the west by Lemon streets. Both Contractor Chamberlain and Inspector Cogburn expect to encounter few sandpits in the territory still left, and are confident the work can be finished without mishaps or delays. One or two small connections are yet to be made to complete the work south of Center street, caused by a change in the plans. Miss Leila Steadman's pupils upon the piano gave a highly creditable recital at her home on Saturday afternoon, when they acquitted themselves most capitally. Miss Steadman is herself among the most proficient artists upon the piano in this section, and in giving instruction in the art has attained a marked degree of success. Many numbers were played, all of which elicited praise from those fortunate enough to be present. They are Roy, Fred and Newell Dudley, aged respectively thirteen, nine and seven years, and have been in St. Catherine's six weeks. Harold and Clara Dudley, the parents, were both instantly killed by an electric car in Los Angeles Sunday afternoon. They were riding a motorcycle, tandem, and ran headlong into a swiftly-moving car. Both were instantly killed, and it was evident to those who witnessed the tragedy that the act was suicidal. Dudley, who was of an intensely jealous disposition, was evidently contemplating this act when he provided a home for the children here. Mr. and Mrs. Alfred L. Leonard were in town from Hollywood this week paying a visit to their ranch southwest of the city. Mr. Leonard is special examiner of the pension bureau, and while devoting his attention to official duties, his wife runs the ranch. She has scored quite a success at walnut growing, although Mexican thieves made away with a large part of last season's crop.The stolen nuts were later recovered and returned to her.Recently she gave employment to a gang of Mexican wood choppers to cut wood on shares, but as they seemed to be getting away with all the wood,she called the deal off.She lives at Hollywood,and makes frequent visits to the ranch,which is one of the most attractive and best producers in Orange county. Mr. Ferrand is a frequent visitor here, and is the means of directing a great deal of business to Anaheim.
