FIRST BALL A HOME RUN
Locals Defeat Sierra Madre Aggregation, 4 to 2
Big Al Mensencamp, star twirler for the Anaheim speed merchants, gave an exhibition of slab work on the local grounds on Sunday afternoon that caused the fans to sit up and take notice. He let the hard-hitting Sierra Madre team down with two hits and two runs, defeating them by a score of 4 to 2. He hit two batsmen, gave one base on balls, struck out nine men and had nine assists to first base. He also caught a pop fly, making him figure in twenty of the twenty-seven outs. Pico of the visitors held the locals to five hits and struck out seven, but was rather free with his walks and hitting batsmen. He gave three bases on balls and hit four men.
Joe Hendricks was out of the game on account of a lame foot and Fischer was put on first. He accepted thirteen chances without an error. Leland Lewis played second.
The fielding feature of the game was the double play by Sierra Madre, Harigoyne to Ray to Pico, retiring Wisser and L. Lewis. F. Pico's stop of F. Lewis's line drive in the sixth was a nice bit of fielding.
F. Lewis hit the first ball pitched in the first inning for a home run, securing a bat from Houts & Son. Mensencamp also clouted the ball, getting two 2-base hits in as many times at bat. F. Pico of the visitors was the only man to hit the ball safe, getting a 2-base and a 3-base hit. Fischer and Schneider each got a single and the rest nothing.
The game was played in one hour and fifteen minutes, the boys being kept on the jump by Rex Badley, who umpired a very satisfactory game.

Next Sunday the locals play the Hat Box team of Los Angeles. The game will not be called until 2:30.
On New Years a game has been arranged with the Olinda oil wells to be played on the Anaheim diamond.

ASK FOR CEMENT PIPE LINE
Water Company Will Construct It,
Under Certain Conditions
Anaheim, Dec. 17, 1910.
The board of directors of the A.U.W.Co. met in regular session on the above date, with all members present except director McLauchlin.
The minutes of the preceding regular meeting were read and approved.
A petition was received from C.W. Almes, Thos. Strain and others, for a cement pipe line beginning at Devonshire's S.E. corner, thence south along east line of T. Strain Jr.666 feet, thence south200 feet on the line of T. Strain Sr., thence southeast through said land160 ft. to line between Mr. Strain and A. Christensen, thence west along said line500 feet, thence south across the land of A. Christensen330 feet to land of T.Anderson, thence diagonally across said land to Chapman avenue.
The petition was referred back to the petitioners, with the continued from Page I lon some years ago, being almost perfect as to type, and with us it has retained that character so hard to make persist in California—the desirable short, abbreviated development of the leaves. Seeds,5c per packet, postpaid.
Pepper Cress.-This garden plant is one that in some parts of the country is very highly esteemed and much used. The most common practice is to use it in conjunction with mustard seedlings to make a very palatable sandwich, using a thin layer of the tiny plants between well cut pieces of bread and butter, such as is customary in making lettuce products.

Christensen 330 feet to land of T. Anderson, thence diagonally across said land to Chapman avenue. The petition was referred back to the petitioners, with the request that they include in same the agreement to pay their proportion of the expense of construction of pipe line, and to deed the required rights of way, and also to release the company from any liability that might be incurred by reason of damage to adjoining property through waste water. On motion of Porter, seconded by Hale, it was agreed that the company pay one-half of the cost of construction of the said pipe line, provided that a satisfactory petition and agreement is submitted.
An application was received from S. Ross for the purchase of sixty sacks of cement. On motion the application was granted.
On motion of Hale the president and secretary were authorized to issue warrants in payment for the semi-annual interest on bonds, amounting to $9375.00.
Applications on file for the transfer of stock were granted.
A request for the privilege of purchasing 30 sacks of cement by J. A. Greenough was granted.
Moved by Porter seconded by director Drake that the superintendent be instructed to paint all the iron delivery gates with a suitable preparation. The motion carried.
Pepper Cress.—This garden plant is one that in some parts of the country is very highly esteemed and much used. The most common practice is to use it in conjunction with mustard seedlings to make a very palatable sandwich, using a thin layer of the tiny plants between well cut pieces of bread and butter, such as is customary in making lettuce sandwiches. It is also delightful when used to supplement sandwiches made of cold meats.
It is particularly grateful and refreshing when used in spring and early summer, and to be at its best the seedlings should be cut just as soon as the seedleaves are nicely developed and before the third leaf is much expanded. One nice feature of this salad plant is that it can be grown almost anywhere, in any odd corner of the garden, or yard, in a shallow box, on a board, or on a plate, for about an inch of soil is all the plant's requirements.
As a delightful eating and easily grown salad plant, pepper cress is worthy of our better attention. Our seed is of an imported strain remarkable for producing a robust, tender and succulent seedling.
Seeds, 5c per packet, postpaid.

FULLERTON
Fullerton is to be made one of the most important junctions in Southern California. During the past year several thousand feet of new sidetracks have been put in. A train crew and a large force of workmen are here now putting in nearly 5000 feet more of new sidings to be used at this junction point for switching cars and trains from the San Diego to the Los Angeles or Riverside-San Bernardine tracks and a special siding will be put in for holding private cars that are to be transferred from one run to another.
One of the largest signals in the state will be placed across the track a few blocks west of the depot. It will be in the form of a steel bridge costing several thousand dollars, and the lights displayed for local and over land trains can be seen miles away.
It is said the work under way here will cost more than $25,000 and that when it is completed there will be another increase of the working force at the depot.
The Olmstead lumber company is opening a large lumber yard here under the management of H. J. Wyman.
DRY LAND AGRICULTURE
Continued from Page 7 these older countries the fact has been clearly brought out that deep or wide rooted trees are able to stand drought much better than shallow-rooted annual crops. It must be remembered that trees produce not only fruits and nuts, but also rough and concentrated stock food, oils, drugs, and various other industrial products. One of the most striking examples of dry-land agriculture that has yet been brought into prominence is olive growing in the semiarid regions of northern Africa.
By seeking out individuals who have been farming for a series of years and by gathering up their experiences, a good deal has been already learned about the proportion of years in which there have been crop failures and about the crops which are most reliable under the semiarid conditions prevailing. This work is being carried on by the Office of Farm Management and is being correlated so far as practicable with other lines of study in the department.

By seeking out individuals who have been farming for a series of years and by gathering up their experiences, a good deal has been already learned about the proportion of years in which there have been crop failures and about the crops which are most reliable under the semiarid conditions prevailing. This work is being carried on by the Office of Farm Management and is being correlated so far as practicable with other lines of study in the department especially the reconnoissance soil surveys being conducted by the Bureau of Soils.
From time to time farmers are found who have been living in the dry belt from ten to twenty years and have developed for themselves a successful system of agriculture. A study of these systems, together, with the methods of handling the soil, will, it is believed, put the department in possession of information which will be very useful to settlers, who must have some immediate information to help them in their work.
If you need a nice buggy for a Christmas present call on us, we will sell you at 20 per cent discount, so a $100 buggy costs you $80, a $80 buggy cost you $64, and that is saving money. Stern & Goodman, Fullerton, Cal.

New York and Texas will be, the names of the two new battleships authorized at the last session of congress. Texas will be the name of the vessel which, as provided by the last naval bill, will be constructed by a private contractor, while the New York Dreadnaught will be built by the government at the New York navy yard.
This selection of names for the two most powerful vessels in the United States navy, which was made by Secretary of the Navy Meyers, will necessitate the changing of the designation of two warships already in commission, for at present there is the Texas, a second-class battleship, which will be renamed San Marcos, in honor of a city of Texas. Her displacement is only 6315 tons, while the new Texas will be of 27,000 tons displacement.

and received the benefit of a healthy digestion and complexion and of preventing seriouls diseases. The Turkish Baths given at the Adelheld Bath Parlors with the famous Dr. Moorefield's Patent Vapor Tubs are the most effective and sanitary
ones in existence and are a valuable improvement over the hot stifling rooms of the common Turkish bathrooms. Our Tubs received the gold medal at the St. Louis exposition in competition with several hundred of other bath-tub exhibits representing every civilized country on the face of the globe; again the diploma at the Interstate fair at Spokane, Wash., in 1907, and finally the diploma at the state fair at Sacramento, Cal., in 1908, and it will receive again the highest honor at the coming San Francisco world's exposition in 1915 without a doubt. Eminent doctors have declared these tubs as simply wonderful, and people who have taken baths here are overflowing with praise.
You and you and everyone of you need these Turkish Baths and if you don't use them may the Gods forgive you. The Roman people in olden times were the most advanced in every way; they were in possession of splendid bath houses and remained there for hours and sometimes for days and in consequence they were the most beautiful, the most athletic and healthiest people of their days. They ruled all the nations and were capable of accomplishing almost anything. Whenever they started a new town, an up-to-date bath house was the first building to be built., the first and last thought of every thoroughbred Roman.
We have two departments—one for ladies, with a lady attendant and expert masseuse; and one for gentlemen, with man attendant and masseur.
