FRUIT GROWERS CONVENTION
Meeting to Be Held at Stockton on December 6-9
Editor Gazette.—The State Fruit Growers of California will hold their annual fall convention at Stockton, on Dec. 6-9, under the auspices of the state commission of horticulture, to which we most cordially invite every one interested or engaged in the fruit growing industry.
This fall convention is in a measure the summing up of the fruit season of the year from both a cultural and marketing aspect, and with these two phases before us work out the problems most likely to confront us the coming season.
The success achieved during the past year by the deciduous fruit growers in the northern portion of our state is largely accountable to the widespread influence of the standardization movement which was inaugurated last fall; how great this influence has been on our industry and is to be in the future we hope to have clearly set before us during the day's session devoted to this important subject. The reports and papers on this topic will be taken up and discussed.
The committee on entertainment is given below, and we think it would be wise to send them your name so that a good room in a desirable location can be reserved for you.
All the transportation companies have granted us reduced rates of one and one-third fares for the roundtrip Procure a receipt when purchasing a ticket which will, when countersigned by the secretary of the convention, entitle you to a one-third fare, returning.
Do not come with the idea that this is a pessimistic gathering for the purpose of discussing our losses and mistakes, but a meeting of our growers intent on instilling new activity and ideas into every phase of our fruit industry.
This convention of fruit growers should be the largest and most helpful ever held in California—it will be if you come and bring your friends and neighbors. Respectfully yours,
J. W. Jeffrey, Commissioner.
O. E. Bremner, Secretary.
Entertainment Committee—J. E. Hall, Stockton; D. B., Morrill, Stockton; Frank L. Williams, Stockton.
FRAME-UP, SAYS DR. WILEY
The success achieved during the past year by the deciduous fruit-growers in the northern portion of our state is largely accountable to the widespread influence of the standardization movement which was inaugurated last fall; how great this influence has been on our industry and is to be in the future we hope to have clearly set before us during the day's session devoted to this important subject. The reports and papers on this topic will be taken up and discussed by those most intimately associated with the movement the past year, and in this connection we wish to say that as ample time has been provided for the discussion of all points brought out, it is to be hoped that everyone will come prepared to take an active part in this portion of the programme. We realize that it is quite impossible to present every topic of particular interest that should engage our attention at the present time, and we must, therefore, select those which will raech the greatest number and produce the most permanent good. The subject of standardization stands alone in its general importance, and is sufficient to justify every effort on your part to attend.
The program as outlined presents other important matters for your consideration, and it would be incomplete without a session devoted to grapes, particularly as San Joaquin county is famed as the home of our renowned Flame Tokay. Wine and raisin grapes will also come in for a portion of this session.
Among other timely subjects will appear squirrel eradication, colonizing northern California, agricultural education, agricultural legislation, and special subjects on such topics as soil bacteria and insect problems, besides many others of equal importance and interest.
This convention of fruit growers should be the largest and most helpful ever held in California—it will be if you come and bring your friends and neighbors. Respectfully yours,
J. W. Jeffrey, Commissioner.
O. E. Bremner, Secretary.
Entertainment Committee—J. E. Hall, Stockton; D. B., Morrill, Stockton; Frank L. Williams, Stockton.
FRAME-UP, SAYS DR. WILEY
Speculative Interests After the Scap of the Cattle Farmer
The so-called reduction in price of meats is a deliberate manipulation of the market, according to Dr. Harvey W. Wiley, chief of the bureau of chemistry, department of agriculture, in a statement made in Washington last week.
"The interests which manipulated the prices upward," said Dr. Wiley, "temporarily have released their hold on our throats for the purpose of getting a fresh grip. The so-called reduction in meats is fictitious.
"Its manipulation was deliberate, just as the increases in prices were unjust, unreasonable and uncalled for by conditions throughout the country. The prices were fictitious at the top notch, because they were forced there arbitrarily.
"Developments will show that the interests are after some one. It may be some independent firm they hope to drive from cover."
Secretary Wilson says that the announced reduction in prices was abnormal. He said it was due to drought in the cattle raising country increasing the cost of hay. The farmer with cattle on his hands must pay $35 per ton for his hay and rather than do that he was sending his cattle and sheep to market. This accounted for sulphurous acid is sold to children bakeries shows rotten eggs are used.
The federal government in the movement impure food in Harvey Wiley, he and drugs bureau detailed two insignificant investigations.
The federal inquiry than fifty egg dakers' supplies eggs. One of them the price of "roasted eggs are from $1.50 or $2 since the inquiry."

the sudden tumble in prices, he said.
“This tumble is not all normal and will not be all permanent,” continued Mr. Wilson, “but a plentiful corn crop and plenty of grain will enable the farmer to feed freely and we should get a lower level of prices. Lower prices are certain to come, provided that somewhere between the farmer and the consumer there is no combination nor agreement to keep them up.”
Bad meat, so decayed that it has to be sprayed with sulphurous acid to conceal its condition, has been sold daily to the New York public, the municipal investigation into general food conditions discloses.
Candy which has been treated with sulphurous acid to prevent stickiness is sold to children. Investigation of bakeries shows that in fifty concerns rotten eggs are used in making cakes.
The federal government took a hand in the movement to stop the sale of impure food in New York City. Dr. Harvey Wiley, head of the pure food and drugs bureau at Washington, has detailed two inspectors to assist the New York board of health in its investigation.
The federal inspectors visited more than fifty egg dealers and dealers in Broadway, came to one of his quarter-masters. The sailor straightened up and saluted. Admiral Evans looked down and there lay another quartermaster, asleep in the gutter. “Drunk, eh?” said Evans. “Oh, no, sir,’’ said the erect quartermaster deprecatingly. “Oh, I wouldn't call him drunk, sir. I just seen him move his fingers a little.”
IT'S YOUR KIDNEYS
Don't Mistake the Cause of Your Troubles—An Anaheim Citizen
Shows How to Cure Them
Many people never suspect their kidneys. If suffering from a lame, weak or aching back they think that it is only a muscular weakness; when urinary trouble sets in they think it will soon correct itself. And so it is with all the other symptoms of kidney disorders. That is just where the danger lies. You must cure these troubles or they may lead to diabetes or Bright's disease. The best remedy to use is Doan's Kidney Pills. It cures all ills which are caused by weak or diseased kidneys. Anaheim people testify to permanent cures.

CUPID AND THE GIRLS
Cupid keeps girls from joining labor unions, according to the women delegates to the American Federation of Labor convention, recently in session in St. Louis.
The objection that stenographers have to joining the union, said Miss Mabel Hudson, of Chicago, is that they do not intend to be stenographers all their lives.
"All suspender workers," said Miss May Nihil, international secretary of the suspender workers, "think they will work too short a time to make it worth while to join the union. They expect to marry. Our most able supporters are the girls who joined the union before getting married. It is the married women who are going to become the big force in the laboring world."
"You've heard the recipe for cooking a hare?" "Yes. First catch hare, eh." "No; first catch your cook."
