County Assessor Scott and Deputy G. M. Wright were in town from Santa Ana on Monday afternoon. Miss Mary Raymond of Spokane is here on a visit to relatives, a guest of Mrs. Ahlborn. Secretary of State Curry has our thanks for a copy of the Bluebook of 1909. Bert Annin, candidate for the republican nomination for supervisor of this district, was in town on Monday meeting friends and supporters. W. D. Thompson has new neighbors and has put an extra padlock on his chicken coop. Mr. and Mrs. L. Farmer of Colorado Springs have purchased the Germania restaurant of E. Huenemeyer, and take possession on the 15th. They will conduct a first class eating house and will serve customers with the best the market affords. A. Osborne of the California vegetable union was in town on Friday. He has shipped 250 cars of vegetables from this district since October last, and expects to begin shipments of tomatoes and cauliflower in October next. The outlook is good for a big crop, and he expects to ship 200 cars of tomatoes alone. The property of the Folding Crate company, including a planing mill, building and machinery, was sold last week by Receiver H. Stern to T. S. Grimshaw for $2450. This comprises all the property of the bankrupt company. The liabilities amount to $14,000, and an assessment will probably be levied upon stockholders to liquidate the balance of outstanding accounts. Miss Ruby Cassou gave a farewell party at the home of her parents on West Center street last week in honor of Miss Ida Heying who has gone to Los Angeles to live with her parents. Refreshments were served, consisting of ice cream, cake, candy and fruit punch. Each of the guests brought a souvenir for Miss Ida and Johnny Walls has a new story, but we hear it isn't true. Herman Dickel listened to the Sad sea waves at Ocean Park on Sunday. A. H. Cargill is here from Yuma, walking on the sunny side of the street to keep warm. Father Andrew, Mr. and Mrs.Mickenthaler and family and Mrs. Kistler attended the picnic of Catholic societies at Redondo Beach on Saturday. Horace McPhee, editor of the Santa Ana Blade, was a visitor in town on Monday afternoon. He said Anaheim was getting to be quite a city. Wm. McLauchlin who was to have sailed with his wife for Japan next month, on a year's tour of the world, has cancelled his reservations on account of the indisposition of Mrs. McLauchlin. Archie Henry was in town on Saturday afternoon from his ranch in the West End. Archie has shipped his oranges, and is preparing to harvest a bumper walnut crop. Frank Monaghan was in town from Santa Ana a day or two. Frank ran the first Southern Pacific train from Los Angeles to this city in 1877. For a number of years he has been interested in mining operations in Arizona, and is said to have more dinero than many people have hay. Joseph Shrofer and wife of Chicago were guests of Mr. and Mrs. F. A. Kimball the past week. Mr. Shrofer is a passenger conductor on the Chicago and Northwestern railroad, upon which Mr. Kimball was a locomotive engineer for many years. The visitors were taken to various points of interest hereabout, and expressed themselves as being delighted with the country. Miss Nellie Thompson who has been visiting in town the past two weeks returned to Long Beach yesterday, accompanied by Miss Edleen Armstrong who will remain for an extended visit in the beach town. Luis Pacheco was sentenced to sixty days in the county jail. He plead guilty to simple assault, he being charged with an attempt to kill his friend, Julio Duarte. Duarte was cut twice in the back. He said it was largely his fault, as he had struck at Pacheco with his fist, and he did not think Pacheco ought to be prosecuted. Julius Schneider, deputy horticultural commissioner, is carrying on a campaign against the Russian thistle, Johnson grass, morning glory, annis and other noxious weeds. He finds these weeds in numerous patches throughout this portion of the county and is inaugurating vigorous warfare against them. The U. S. New packing houses are being erected, electric plants being installed, and an era of advancement apparent everywhere. Sam is out for a governor from Southern California, and is boosting for Stanton. Clyde Bishop was in town from Santa Ana on Friday looking after his political fences, which he found to be of altitudinous height and unusually strong. Bishop will poll a big vote in the northern portions of Orange county and will probably land a winner with votes to spare. He will make an admirable assemblyman and will give a good account of himself at Sacramento. Miss Blanche Stuart Scott and Miss Gertrude Phillips of New York, who are making an automobile tour from Bristol, Pennsylvania, Mrs. Richardson and two daughters are camping at the Landing. J. S. Sheridan left on Monday for a two months visit to South Dakota. Mr. and Mrs. Amberg spent Sunday at Bay City. A Southern California editor maintains that half the lies told about him are not true. Conliff Brothers have a force of expert mechanics engaged upon the brick work on Hart's new building on Center street. Don Henrico Oelkers listened to what the sad sea waves were saying at Anaheim Landing on Sunday. Clarence McFadden won a $5 hat on Gillett four years ago, and is ready to win another one on Stanton. He says the one is about worn out, and he needs another. J. L. McBride, candidate for the republican nomination for county surveyor, was in town on Tuesday. McBride has a good record, and he looks to us like a pretty good sort of a lad. Mrs. Hattie Mitchell of Hollywood will shortly begin the erection of a business block on her property on Los Angeles street. There will be three or four storerooms, and all of which have already been leased, to be occupied upon completion. Frank Mauricio, foreman of the state printing office, was in town on Tuesday in the interest of Billy Shannon, candidate for the republican nomination for state printer. Frank is an old-time printer and is putting in strenuous work for his chief in the southern counties. The body of V. Robinson, the 17-year-old son of T. J. Robinson, of Clair, who was drowned at Anaheim Landing on Sunday week, was recovered on Wednesday afternoon of last The U. S. County Horticultural Commissioner Bishop has headed an organized effort to rid the county of Johnson grass. He has secured orders from the board of supervisors instructing road bosses to cultivate the life out of the grass along roadways. The Santa Ana city trustees have instructed Street Superintendent Ward to cooperate in the work of exterminating the grass inside the city limits. On Monday evening Bishop asked the Orange city trustees to take similar action. He has recently returned from a trip to San Juan Capistrano, where he held a meeting of orchardists and the directors of the water company. The orchardists will do their best to rid the valley of the noxious plant. The water company directors have promised to kill it out along their ditches. Miss Blanche Stuart Scott and Miss Gertrude Phillips of New York, who are making an automobile tour from the Atlantic to the Pacific coast, passed through town on Thursday last in their auto on their way to the Mexican line. After a brief stop they started for Santa Ana, escorted by Capt. Williams, accompanied by Miss Rea and the Misses Asher. Arriving at Santa Ana they were met by Mr. Martin, who entertained the entire party at a noon-day dinner. Mack Atherton set a coyote trap on his father's place at the ostrich farm the other evening, in anticipation of catching one of the varmints. On going to the trap next morning he beheld a large badger securely held in the sprung trap by two of its toes. The trap was reset and next morning another large badger, evidently the other one's mate, was entrapped. Both animals were sent to the happy hunting grounds.
