ANAHEIM SHOWS CLASS ON HOME DIAMOND
DEFEAT BOYNTON BEAVERS IN A HARDFOUGHT PITCHER'S BATTLE
Beavers' Pitcher a Puzzle to Home Team Until Eighth Inning, When Four Hits Were Made Good For Four Runs—Rooters Again Save the Day by Gingering Up Locals in the Next to the Last Inning
Anaheim again showed her class by defeating the strong Boynton Beaver team of Los Angeles by a score of 4 to 3 in a fast and exciting game. The Beavers proved to be the fastest team that has appeared here and the pitching of B. Tompkins was a puzzle to the Anaheim sluggers until the eighth inning, when the locals landed on him for four hits and four runs. Up to the eighth Anaheim made only one hit and was shut out, not a man being able to reach second base.
Pitcher Gonzales, the new local player, who held down right field, started the fine work in the eighth by driving out a nice clean double, scoring Huntington, who had reached first on an error of Kincald. Schmidt and J. Hendricks singled infield, filling the bases, when Fisher came to bat with a look of determination on his face and drove in the three runs with a slashing two-base hit to left field, taking third on the throw home. He died at this station, as the Beavers settled down and stopped the scoring.
In their half of the ninth the Beavers were unable to score and the game went to the home team. A nice crowd was present to root for the home boys, and it was their encouraging shouts that started the batting feast.
SHE APPEALS FOR PARDON
Pomona Woman Gets Busy With Republican Candidate
Phil Stanton, candidate for the republican nomination for governor, received a letter this week, written by a Pomona women, who asks him to please pardon her husband, who has been sent to jail for some offense or other, and can't seem to get out.
The letter was addressed to "Governor P. A. Stanton, Sacramento, Cal." and first went to the hand of Governor James N. Gillett, who sent it to Mr. Stanton, with the following note:
"I see that you are breaking into the governor's office pretty fast. Enclosed please find letter which I have just received through my mail, addressed to Governor Stanton. You certainly have a warm supporter in Pomona, all right."
Mr. Stanton said that he should now investigate the man's case, and if there is anything he can do for him, he is going to do it.
ESTUDIANTINA QUARTETTE

The quartette consists of Miss Lillian Scanlon, Misses Gertrude and Ida Kennedy and Miss Nicolas. A large audience promises to be present to greet the young ladies. After the concert there will be a social dance. The music for the evening will be furnished by the Schoneman-Blanchard orchestra of Los Angeles. The 50-cent reserved seat tickets to all parts of the house are on sale at the Mission cany store, and are going fast.
Following is the program:

The Beavers are a fine gentlemanly crowd of boys and took their defeat in true sportsmanlike manner.
The United States government, through the postal department, has taken exception to the Spanish grammar of the god-fathers of the hamlet of El Modena. On the records of the postoffice department, the suffix "a" has been expurged and "o" substituted. Because some language shark discovered something fundamentally wrong in the construction of the name the government called the deal off, renamed the postoffice El Modeno and required Postmaster Lentz to file a new bond. The error is said to have been the employment of a feminine ending, where it should have been otherwise, and though the postoffice has managed to struggle along for a number of years under this handicap, all that has been changed. El Modena is now El Modeno.
Mr. Brown (rushing excitedly into the room): Marie, Marie, intelligence has just reached me——
Mrs. Brown (calmly interrupting him): Well, thank heaven, Henry.

James J. Corbett, in the smoking-room of the Mauretania, praised the style of Jim Jeffries. It's a neat style he said; neat, quick, to the point. It gets there like the remark of a little girl who said to the minister in the course of a quite interminable call: Did you forget to bring your amen with you, doctor?
Did your husband get that terrible red nose working out in the sunshine? asked one woman. No, answered the other: That aint sunshine; that is moonshine.

You say you have quit smoking? Yep, never going to smoke again.
Then why dont you throw away those cigars? Never. I threw away a box of good cigars the last time I quit smoking and it taught me a lesson.
The Minister—Mackintosh, why dont you come to church now? Mackintosh—For three reasons, sir. Firstly, I dinna like yer theology; secondly, I dinna like yer singin', and thirdly, it was in your kirk I first met my wife.
