Bullard, an old-time friend of Judge Howard, has arrived from Iowa and has purchased ten acres of the Gaylord McDevitt tract west of town. Mr. Bullard will erect a residence and make other substantial improvements. Company E will be reinspected on Thursday evening next, the 31st.The company has recently added a number of new men, and the roll now bears the names of 57 good men and true. It is freely predicted that the company will pass muster in flying coors. Postmaster Duckworth yesterday reported $300 yet to go to insure free city delivery. The year closes next Thursday evening, and as Mr. Duckworth feels the year's business should go well over the $10,000 mark, there is still work to do on the part of the progressive element of our townspeople. Herman Stern was last week appointed receiver for the Folding Crate company by Referee Lynn Helm of Los Angeles. Homer G. Ames of this city recently resigned as referee in bankruptcy, which position he has held for some years past, and it was necessary for the Los Angeles referee to come to this county and make the appointment. Melrose & Ames appeared for Stern. The company's liabilities are $15,000, with assets sufficient, so it is said, to pay off all claims dollar for dollar. Montgomery left on Tuesday for Los Angeles where he is trying hot salt baths for rheumatism. He recently returned from Elsinore springs, where he went to take the baths, and was greatly improved there by. He is again troubled with the allment, and may again go to the springs for another course at the baths. The board of city trustees on Wednesday last awarded a contract to the Fairchild-Gilmore-Wilton company for paving Claudina street from Center to Broawday at 13 1-2 cents. The charge for paving Center and Los Angeles streets was 12 cents. The advance is brought about, so the paving company states, by the increased cost of material. An auto party consisting of Mr. and Mrs. John Hartung, Mrs. Rothschild and Miss Emily Rothschild of Port Townsend, Mrs. Dimmock and Miss Gussie Dimmick of Los Angeles, and E. J. Hartung at the wheel, visited Bay City and Long Beach on Sunday. At the latter place they were horrified spectators of the fall of an aeronaut from a collapsed balloon 300 feet in air. The man fell near their auto. He was rendered unconscious, but quickly recovered. L. W. Borchard has filed answer in the superior court to a suit recently filed against him by R. E. Coffman, alleging misrepresentation in a land deal. Coffman traded a Riverside house for a house at Goldfield. In his complaint, Coffman alleged he found the Goldfield house unrented and not what was represented. Bushard in his answer declares he had never visited the Goldfield property, and that the Riverside house, instead of renting for $12 a month, rented for $10. H. V. P. at last week's banquet, which appeared in this paper last week, was made by Artist Howard of this city. Dr. F. P. Blake of Brookshurst was a business visitor in town some days ago. Dr. Blake is a new arrival in this section. He has discontinued practice, and is giving his attention to the cultivation of his ranch, which is one of the most productive in the valley. Articles of incorporation were filed in Los Angeles on Tuesday by the Rimpau Real Estate Company. The capital stock is $45,000, which is fully subscribed. The incorporators are Theodore, Adolph, Sophia, Marie L., Frank T., Fred C., Ben A., James A., and John L. Rimpau. Mrs. Gaxiola has presented Mrs. Melendrez with an easy chair, for which she collected subscriptions of money from people charitably disposed. She desires to convey her thanks to all who contributed, the object of their charity being a deserving woman who has long resided here, and who is seriously ill with paralysis. Mrs. J. F. Digan of Logansport, Ind., niece of Judge Shanley, is visiting at the home of that gentleman, accompanied by her little boy. Mrs. Digan will remain for the summer. She is the wife of a wealthy manufacturer of motors for automobiles, employing 1200 men, and looks for a visit from her husband later in the season. Tom Forman and Miss Gertrude Selfert eloped from San Diego on Monday morning, and when they landed at Santa Ana they ran into the arms of an officer who had been apprised of their act by their parents. The young man is 18 and the girl 15. Their parents came after them following day and they were taken back to the city of bay and climate, where a quiet family wedding will be arranged in the near future. A birthday surprise party was given by Mrs. C. W. Martin at the family residence on Lemon street on Wednesday evening, the occasion being Mr. Martin's birthday. Progressive whist was played. The lady's first prize went to Mrs. Fulwider and the consolation to Mrs. Marshall.The gentleman's first prize was won by Oscar Renner and consolation by R. H. Seale. Gillett, for the arrest of Rosario Saiz, who shot and killed Jose Machado at a sheep-shearers' camp near Sunset Beach last fall. Salz escaped to Mexico, and was arrested at Ensenada some time ago for a petty offense.Before extradition papers could be procured he was released. He was again arrested, and this time an effort will be made to bring him back. Miss Fanny Kline is spending her Easter vacation as travelling companion to San Francisco of her cousin, Miss Flora Segil, of Denver, Colorado, who is on her way to Honolulu. The young ladies will spend the holidays reconnoitering the Golden Gate surroundings. Miss Segil will then continue to the Islands. Miss Kline will return home, no doubt with a big fairytale in hand for the little beginners at the primary school about the big golden hinges on the big Golden Gate—"Mirabille visu." Mrs. Alice C. Carson, sister of Mrs. M. A. Ryan, died at the latter's home on East Santa Ana street at noon on Saturday, March 12, in her 78th year. Mrs. Carson has resided in Anaheim the past four years and her gentleness and amiability of character endeared her to everyone with whom she was intimately associated. She was tenderly laid to rest in Calvary cemetery in Los Angeles on Tuesday, March 15. She is survived by her sister, Mrs. Ryan, and three nieces, Mrs. Alice Kennedy, Miss Annie Ryan and Miss Byril Kennedy. The debate between A.H.S. and Los Angeles high will be held in the latter city on Monday evening next. Anaheim will be represented by Miss Irene Mills and Hans Storm. They take the affirmative side of the question, "Resolved, That three-fourths of a jury should be sufficient to render a verdict in all jury cases." The local school has this season defeated Santa Barbara and Los Angeles Polytechnic highschools, and is fourth in the list of highschools in the debating league, being led by Los Angeles by a third of a point. Should it win the debate it will participate in the final debate for the championship. Lieut. Holbrook was painfully injured by a runaway at Whittier on Wednesday evening of last week as Company 25 of the uniform rank, K.P., was marching along the principal street of that city. He was again arrested, and this time an effort will be made to bring him back. The shot which laid Machado low is said to have been intended for Santos Carrisosa, in whose camp the killing was done. A rumor current among the Mexicans is that Saiz has been in Anaheim looking for Carisosa since his escape after the Machado murder. The Gazette representative who reported the proceedings of the city trustees at their last meeting got his notes somewhat mixed and thereby caused considerable anxiety and mystification among the residents on West Center street. The efforts of the Fairchilds-Gilmore-Wilton Co. to secure a contract for further street paving at 13 1-2 cents per foot referred merely to the paving of Claudina street and had no connection with the West Center street contracts. The agreement to pave that street at the proposed cost of 12 cents per square foot is not effected by this new proposition, and the system to be used is in no wise an infringement upon the Warren Bros.' patent.
