Attorney L. A. West of Santa Ana announces his candidacy in our columns today for the republican nomination for district attorney, subject to the August primaries. Mr. West is a lawyer of eminent attainments, is a forceful speaker and enjoys a large and lucrative practice at the county seat. His friends have prevailed upon him to enter the lists for the district attorneyship, and there is no doubt as to his qualifications to fill the office. While it is expected that every candidate must be courteous and affable to all during the campaign, Mr. West scores high as a mixer, and he is broad-minded enough to say that if he should fail to land the nomination, the party's candidate will have no more staunch supporter than he. It is that kind of talk which leaves a good impression in the minds of the voters. More of that talk, and less factional hairpulling Wednesday and Friday afternoon noons. Pacific phone 811.

Victor Montgomery of Santa Ana this week brought suit in the Superior Court to collect attorney's fees from Col. Hoggatt Clopton, and Col. Clopton's daughter, Pearle E., and son, Hugh E., all of Huntington Beach. The amount sued for is $1345.65. The complaint alleges that the services were rendered by the attorney between Feb. 1, 1908, and March 1, 1910. B. E. Tarver is attorney for plaintiff. Attorney Montgomery represented Col. Clopton and his children in the sensational suit brought against him by his wife, Mrs. Jennie Clopton of Long Beach. After the disagreement Mrs. Clopton brought suit under a prenuptial agreement, alleging that Col. Clopton had deeded his property to his son and daughter with the end in view of defeating the wife in her share of the old man's property. In this county Col. Clopton won. In Los Angeles county, where a sister suit was in progress, Mrs. Clopton got possession of the American-avenue residence at Long Beach.

COMPANY E NOTES
Sergeant Miese of the regular U. S. infantry is in Anaheim in the capacity of instructor of military tactics. Several nights a week will be given over to a school for officers and noncommissioned officers during the sergeant's stay here.
The company seems to have taken a new lease of life. Applications for three new members were read at the regular drill night on Thursday last and several more are in sight.
The heart-to-heart talks after drills between the recruits and the old and staid members is doing much to revive a feeling of interest for the welfare of the company. The coming inspection, no matter how stringent, will be met with a determination to win out.
Capt. Schindler attended the semi-monthly school of instruction for commissioned officers at regimental headquarters in Los Angeles on Saturday.
E. W. Pyne has sold to F. E. Simon and J. H. Ransler of Pasadena, the 45-acre tract of unimproved land located four miles east of Olive. The consideration was $10,000. The purchasers will move on the property at once and will improve it. Mr. Pyne still owns a large tract in the same vicinity, a portion of which is improved.
