Astronomers tell us this is not Halley's comet, but another heavenly visitor, and that we shall soon see both. J. M. Pickering and wife were at Hollywood on Friday evening attending a reunion of former Nebraska friends. They met many of their former neighbors, several of whom were on trips around the world. The association has discontinued shipping oranges, on account of poor markets east as a result of the shipment of frozen fruit from Riverside. Shipments will be resumed next week, and a specialty made of frostless-belt oranges. The county board of education this week issued a high school certificate to Miss Katherine Goetzinger of the Santa Ana highschool, and one to Jackson Gregory, teacher of history in the Anaheim school, Miss Mrytle Parker, Orange, was recommended to the state board for a life grammar certificate. Jackson Gregory, teacher of history, in Anaheim high school, arrived Saturday from El Centro and on Monday began his duties at the highschool. Prof. Gregory is a graduate of the University of California. M. J. Cheney, a practical watch-repairer recently arrived from Ohio, has taken a position at Hartfield's and has his hands full in the glorious climate of California. Mr. Cheney is a poet as well as a watchmaker, and writes verse with one hand while repairing watches with the other. E. B. Wise has arrived from Washington state and purchased the Ruiz place at the corner of Davis and Clementina streets. Mr. Wise is a Grand Army man, and was formerly in the newspaper business in the northern state. He contemplates other purchases and will become a permanent resident. Last Sunday evening Mrs. Kealiher heard a noise in her chicken yard and running out on the porch called in commanding tones for the intruder to get out of there. A dark object emerged from the chicken coop and stumbled over a log but managed to get up and away before he was recognized. Going out to the place she picked up a 50c. piece. Mrs. Kealiher says if he wants to make any more such trips he may, providing he leaves a similar amount every time and don't bother the chickens. C. G. Billings has secured the services of O.Lagman to draw plans for a five-room cottage to be erected on Broadway, corner of Vine street.The work will commence at once and the building will be finished in sixty days. Mr. Billings contemplates within the near future constructing a few more cottages with a view of selling or renting, as demand may require. Mr. and Mrs. Herman Stock celebrated their fifth wedding anniversary at their home on Wednesday evening by entertaining a number of relatives and friends with a fine supper. The county board of education this week issued a high school certificate to Miss Katherine Goetzinger of the Santa Ana highschool, and one to Jackson Gregory, teacher of history in the Anaheim school, Miss Mrytle Parker, Orange, was recommended to the state board for a life grammar certificate. Hinze Co., seeking to compel them to bring the Southern California Sugar Co. factory to a capacity it is alleged it has failed to meet. The defendants demur on the general ground that no cause of action is stated, that the complaint is uncertain in many instances, that there is a misjoinder of actions in that specific performance and damage are both asked. The pocket of gas struck in a water well on the place of George Hardin at Buena Park completely demolished the casing at a depth of 200 feet.Old time oil men say this is a good indication of oil. If a strike should be made in that section it would open up a field.The water well is several miles south of the Murphy oil wells in the Coyote hills.Mr. Hardin has not decided whether or not he will continue the hole to a greater depth. A meeting of citizens was held at Miller's hall last evening for the purpose of nominating candidates for city office.Too late for us to get a report of it in time for this issue. A gigantic tarantula, almost two inches in length, crept out of a bunch of bananas at Stoffel's grocery store on Monday afternoon.Fortunately he was seen just as he emerged from retirement, and was captured and corralled in a glass jar by Barney Stoffel, just as several lady customers, who saw the monster, were preparing to faint. The many friends hereabout of Charles Federman will learn with sorrow of his financial difficulties,and it is hoped the same will be merely temporary.Mr. Federman has for some years past been in the wholesale business in Los Angeles, dealing in ladies' wear and goods of kindred nature.His stock is valued at $80,000,and prospects were excellent for a good spring trade.A Los Angeles bank last week brought an attachment in the amount of $17,000,and the store is in the hands of the whole salers' board of trade It is confidently expected that Mr. Federman will our Watch Repairing department Every job is turned out to perfection. McClellan northeast of town, 74 feet in depth, 6 feet in the clear; redwood curbing. Mr. Cook has moved his outfit to the J. Schumacher place south of the Olive bridge where he will install a pumping plant. Mr. and Mrs. W. C. Eyman were here from Riverside the past week, guests at the home of John Eyman. Mr. Eyman purchased a number of walnut trees while here for planting in the upper valley. He reports considerable damage to oranges in his section, but finds no trace of frost in or about Anaheim. Dr. J. M. Shockey of Columbus, O., was a guest the past week of C. F. Grim. Twenty-five years ago Dr. Shockey advised Mr. Grim to come to California for the benefit of his health. He had not seen the latter since, and was agreeably surprised to find his former patient had entirely recovered his health. The doctor is touring Southern California and leaves shortly for his home in the east. While Mr. and Mrs. Charles Eygabroad were in Los Angeles on Monday a thief entered their home at the corner of Walnut and Center Sts. and stole the family's stock of groceries, two blankets, articles of wearing apparel and 30 cents in change.In a bureau drawer near where the thief operated was $40 of Sunday school money, which Mr.: Eygabroad collected the preceding day and had not had time to bank it.The loss was not discovered until their return in the evening, and there is no clue to the offender, who is probably one of the band of hoboes infesting the community.
