A marriage license has been issued to Charles Colby of San Francisco and Miss Mabel Clayton of this city. Bert Simpson went to Garden Grove the first of the week to put the finishing touches on the new bank building. The Ebell society will hold its regular monthly meeting on Saturday afternoon next at 2:30 o'clock at the Masonic hall. The encampment of the Odd Fellows' lodge conferred the third degree on a number of candidates on Friday night, closing with a banquet. County Secretary Douglas of the Y.M.C.A. and Wayne Goble returned on Sunday evening from Redlands, where they attended a two-days' session of the Y.M.C.A. convention. Mrs. C. G. Haag, Laura Fernkopf, Mr. and Mrs. Albert H. Haag and daughter Clara left on Wednesday for their home at Holton, Kans., after an extended visit with Jacob Hochuli and family. W. S. Taylor was in town the first of the week promoting a $10,000 mill which he expects to erect at Beatty. Miss Lydia Gros who is well known here as an amateur singer of ability was married in Boston some weeks ago to Mr. Sweet, a Staten Island capitalist. Sunday being the first Sabbath of the month, the Holy Eucharist will be celebrated in St. Michael's church on that day at 10:30 a.m. Sunday school at 10 a.m. Rudolph Grenke has taken a position at the S.Q.R. Store, having returned to this city after an absence of three years spent in Long Beach and Los Angeles. An electrical fire-alarm system has been installed at the Central grammar school. Prof. Tople states he can empty the building of its more than 300 pupils in 45 seconds by the watch. Street pavers are nearing the Southern Pacific depot on Los Angeles street, and will probably have the street open this week. The force will be moved to West Center street probably next week. The ladies of St. Michael's guild will be entertained on Thursday, Dec. 2, at 3:30 p.m. by Mrs. L. M. Engagements are being announced,and others will follow, so 'tis said. Miss Edna Ames, music teacher in the high school, spent Thanksgiving with friends and relatives in San Bernardino. Squire Marshall's goose came back. Bad boys involved in its disappearance brought it back at midnight the other night. No questions asked, but Marshall says not to do it again. Rollo Wilkins was married in San Francisco a day or two ago to a young lady of that city. They will reside in Anaheim, where Mr. Wilkins will be associated with Dr. MacFarlane. Basket ball teams from the Anaheim and Orange high schools will play the first league basket ball game of the season on the local grounds on Saturday afternoon. A good game is looked forward to. Frank Janernik, aged 49 years, native of Austria, and Carl Hans Kohelenberger, aged 42 years, native of Germany, both residing here, on Tuesday filed their declaration of intention to become citizens of the United States. Mrs. Mary Gade entertained a few young ladies at luncheon on Friday evening, announcing the engagement of her daughter, Miss Georgia, to Ernest M. Litten of Orange The Mrs. C. G. The Ladies Aid society of the Presbyterian church will meet this Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock in the Sunday school room. There will be a "thank offering," and each member is requested to put her offering along with her favorite verse of scripture in an envelope unsigned. All ladies of the church and congregation are cordially invited to be present. Constable Litten states that Deputy Constable Simmons resigned his office voluntarily, and that his resignation had not been asked for, as reported. Mr. Simmons is credited with being an efficient officer, and he resigns to take up other work, and the statement that he had been asked to resign does him injustice. This correction is printed, so that no reflection may be made upon a man who has proven himself to be a good officer. Chilly Fisher's bunch of tall-grass swatters make their debut in the Interurban baseball league on the local diamond on Sunday afternoon. Their opponents are the hard-hitting Burke athletic club of Los Angeles. Chilly's bunch of ball players have made good this season, and now that they are entering fast company should be generously supported by the baseball-loving members of the community. New season's oranges were packed on Tuesday, when the new packing-house on Santa Ana street opened for business. The fruit is of fine flavor and nicely colored. The Association expects to ship not less than 150 cars. S. Lybarger has sold to Mrs. Caroline Fox ninety feet of his property on Lemon street, south of Broadway, containing his residence, for $3-000. Mr. Lybarger will erect a new residence at the corner of Lemon and Broadway. Miss Winifred Melrose spent several days this week as a guest of Miss Katherine Connell in Los Angeles. The two young ladies first met while on a visit to Japan, and the warmest ties of friendship have subsisted between them ever since. Mr. and Mrs. W. T. Wallop entertained the Sidonian club of the Presbyterian church at their home on South Olive street on Friday evening. Games and social converse were the order of the evening. An elaborate supper was discussed and it was late before the merry party dispersed. Mrs. Wilsey of Chicago who has been a guest of Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Gerdes for six weeks past was called home on Saturday by the illness of her daughter. Mrs. Wilsey intended spending the winter in California, but departed immediately for the east on receipt of advices 'of her daughter's illness. C. H. Sleffel and wife of Norton, Kansas, who are visiting friends here, will go to Long Beach on Sunday and will make a trip to Avalon. They are prolonging their stay, and "Sleff" says he is almost persuaded to dispose of his Kansas holdings and locate here permanently. If you do it, we'll say, "Welcome to our city, Sleff." City Clerk Merritt is the busiest man in town. Monday was the last day for payment of city taxes, and in addition to his many other duties he was kept busy taking in dinners is looked forward to. "Lots of news and information in it," he says, "and on the right side of public questions." Top of the morning to you, Mr. Pyne. Robert Perry who stole a horse and buggy belonging to E.W. Champion some weeks ago was on Monday sentenced by Judge Davis of the Los Angeles superior court to two years imprisonment for horse theft in that city before beginning operations here. Perry had already been sentenced to five years for stealing a motorcycle at Riverside. He had several other counts against him, including the theft of Mr. Champion's rig, and will probably have a long term in prison confronting him when he gets through with the officers of the law. The light sentence is due to the fact that Perry confessed his thefts and gave information leading to the return of nearly all of the property. erously supported by the baseball-loving members of the community. The subject is "Resolved, That direct primaries should be adopted as a remedy for poor government and political corruption." The locals take the affirmative, and A.H.S. rooters declare the boys will bring home the Channel City's scalp. Prof. Walker goes along with the colts, each of whom scored one victory in the debates last year, and a bunch of students may accompany them. William Wallace Bird, a well-known California printer, and twenty years ago one of the swiftest compositors on the Pacific coast, drew a phat take on Tuesday, when he was married at Santa Ana to Senora Dominicia Rameriz de Oliveras. "Bill," as he is familiarly called, now resides at Imperial, where he and his fair young bride have gone to take up their residence. Congratulations, Bill. A number of Odd Fellows attended a performance of the Bishop's Carriage at the Belasco theater in Los Angeles on Monday evening. The proceeds were donated to the Odd Fellows' home at Thermocito. The local party numbered 45, a number of ladies being among the number. They returned on the midnight train. James Inerarity of Bay City entertained a number of his friends at his bungalow on Sunday. The day was passed pleasantly, and all hands voted "Jimmy" a royal entertainer. A sumptuous repast of razor-backs and fish and other delicacies was discussed. Pixley was in town from Orange on Monday feeling the public pulse regarding the projected flour mill. Mr. Pixley is interested in the Olive flour mill, which company is sitting up and taking notice of the contemplated new enterprise here. When the case of Neils Anderson against the Union Oil Co. was called for trial by jury in the Superior Court it was dismissed on the request of the plaintiff's attorneys, Williams & Rutan.
