Mrs. Bierent, who is a daughter of this worthy couple, has been here on a visit for some weeks past. Mr. and Mrs. Walls and Mrs. Hall visited Tia Juana and other points south the past week. They were absent from Sunday until Thursday. William Schimmering aged 67, of this city, has taken out his first papers of citizenship. He was born in Germany and arrived in America in 1904. Capt. Mrs. Oscar Renner has returned from an enjoyable two weeks' outing with friends at Redondo. Mrs. M. H. Litten and Ernest Litten departed on Tuesday for a month's outing at Elsinore. Samuel Kraemer and family have returned from Long Beach where they spent their summer vacation. Joseph Helmsen was on Friday granted a final decree of divorce from Mrs. Christina Vogler Helmsen. C. G. Billings and C. C. Chapman at tended sessions of Scottish Rite Masons in Los Angeles several days the past week. Judge West returned last week from a hunting trip to Tehama county. The judge broke no laws limiting the killing of game. Mrs. H. D. Polhemus has purchased ten acres south of the city and with her son Dean will improve the same and reside thereon. William Hanke, recently arrived from Nebraska, has purchased the John Berg orange tract east of town and has taken up his residence there with his family. J. B. L. Z. Huntington is growing 200,000 eucalyptus trees for the Golden State realty company, for planting on its lands northeast of town. U. W. Hall made a business visit to Corona on Monday, and yesterday started for a several-days' trip to Bakersfield and other Kern-coast cities. The Anaheim baseball club goes to Corona to cross bats with the nine at that point Sunday. Each nine has won a game, and there will be blood on the moon. L. F. Lewis, Miss Cora Lewis and Mr. and Mrs. Fitch and children drove down from Los Angeles on Thursday and spent the day with Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Lewis. The engagement is announced of Albert C. Nagel and Miss Harriet Ethel Clark, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Perdomo has gone on a trip to Mexico. Oscar Heying arrived from San Francisco on Tuesday evening. Charles Alfred was operated upon for appendicitis at a Los Angeles hospital some days ago, and his condition is said to be critical. Mr. Alfred a month ago married Miss Kate Seeman of this city. Rev. W. E. Perry of Los Angeles will occupy the pulpit of the Presbyterian church next Sunday morning. Mr. Perry is identified with the national reform bureau and has something of great interest to relate. All come and hear him. Miss McNeill has been spending the summer in Southern California, and left yesterday for her home in Arizona. R. C. Mills of Riverside was in town one day last week, the guest of his son, Robert. The family are domiciled at Newport Beach for the present for the benefit of Mrs. Mills' health, which has not been of the best of late. Edgar Love of Tucson was the guest one day last week of A. A. Lee. Mr. Love is a locomotive engineer, and stepped off his cab last February after a continuous service of 45 years. He may locate in Southern California and pull the throttle on an orange ranch. Trustees Fiscus and Gates were at Santa Monica on Thursday attending the festivities incident to the formal opening of the municipal pier. Two hundred city trustees were present from different sections of Southern California and a way-up time was enjoyed. The Southern Pacific evening train will hereafter run only as far as Santa Ana, the Newport Beach trip having been cut out. This leaves us only a single train a day to Newport Beach leaving at 9:57 a.m. and returning leaving the beach at 3:05 p.m. County Clerk Williams this week Corona to cross bats with the nine at that point Sunday. Heavy rains have fallen in the mountains and water is plentiful. Ernest Yorba commenced on Tuesday hauling grapes to Otto Rust's winery. The crop is fair, and the price is $8 for first crop, $9 for second, $10 for Mission. One grower had 200 tons and sold the crop for $6 on the cars at Esperanza. Frank Eastman reminds us that yesterday was the ninth anniversary of the establishment of rural free delivery in Anaheim. He was appointed carrier of Route No. 1, Sept. 15, 1900, and has been holding down the job ever since. Good for Frank. Mr. and Mrs. Fred Schmidt and three little children left on Tuesday evening for a visit with relatives at North Vernon, Ind. They go by way of Chicago and will visit other points of interest east. Mr. Schmidt will be absent a month. Mrs. Schmidt and the children will be away two months Auf Wiedersehn. Constable Litten had been preparing to move to Kern county, when the city trustees, desiring to retain his services, raised his salary from $25 to $50 per month. Mike's salary hitherto has amounted to $15 per month, and fees brought it up to $25. The trustees cut out the fee system and beginning October 1st will pay $50 per month salary. Dr. Freeman steps in to remind us that the 10th of September was the 97th anniversary of Perry's victory over the British at Lake Erie; also that the 19th and 20th of Sep- capital some days ago, and his condition is said to be critical. The flames attracted attention on Monday and Tuesday evenings, when many people in the valley viewed them through glasses. Carl Leonardt, the contractor, is under investigation by the Los Angeles supervisors on a charge of having worked men more than eight hours per day on the county hospital and hall of records. The financial statement of the First National Bank, published in another column, shows total deposits amounting to $380,860.34, and total resources $516,824.49. The bank continues in flourishing condition and enjoys a floodtide of prosperity. The Folding Crate Co. has closed a contract with W. E. McCann for erection of a six-room bungalow on East Broadway; also with Mrs. Polhemus for a two-story residence and barn on her ranch southeast of town; also with M. Nebelung for the remodeling and reconstruction of his residence on Sycamore street. Rev. F. W. Mitchell, pastor of the Presbyterian church of this city, and Miss Daisy E. Swerdfeger of Santa Ana will be married on Monday next at 3 o'clock at the residence of the bride's parents in the latter city. The officiating clergyman will be Rev. Dr. Garnett of the First Baptist church of Santa Ana. The newly wedded couple after a brief honeymoon trip will take up their residence in this city. Alvin Asher stepped upon a needle at his home some days ago, and it was necessary for Dr. Johnston to administer chloroform in order to extract it. The needle was broken in three pieces as the lad stepped upon it. Two pieces were found upon the floor, but the piece which penetrated the foot was not located until the X-ray was called into requisition. The items are as follows: General fund 17.4 cents, school 13.8, state high school 1.6, interest and sinking fund .6, University of California, 3. Total, 36.4. Dr. Freeman steps in to remind us that the 10th of September was the 97th anniversary of Perry’s victory over the British at Lake Erie; also that the 19th and 20th of September will be the 46th anniversary of the battle of Chicamauga. In this battle, one of the decisive fights of the war, Dr. Freeman was wounded. Erwin Barr also took part in the battle. W. F. Waldon was on Friday sentenced by Judge West to three years in San Quentin for forgery. Waldon forged a number of small checks at Santa Ana. He was traced by officers through letters which he wrote to a San Juan girl, of whom he was infatuated, and was arrested at Porterville. He is supposed to have a prison record, but little is known concerning him. J. D. Gibbs was here from Los Angeles on Thursday in the interest of his wholesale grocery house. Mr. Gibbs is an old-time personal friend of R. S. Lovett, who succeeds Mr. Harriman as head of the railroad formerly controlled by the deceased magnate. Both lived in Huntsville, Tex., for years, and their families are intimately acquainted. Mr. Gibbs tells many reminescences of his former fellow-townsman, whom he pronounces one of the shrewdest railway lawyers in the land. It was while acting as the railroad company’s counsel in the Lone Star state that Mr. Harriman’s attention was first directed to Mr. Lovett, and he was employed as his New York representative at a salary of $100,000 per year. CHURCH NOTICES Next Sunday will be a great day in the history of the local Methodist Church. In the morning at 11 o’clock will occur the dedication of the remodeled church by Dr. G. F. Bovard, president of the University of Southern California, and in the evening the pastor’s farewell sermon the subject of which is “The Multifold Christ.” There will be special music at both services. In the morning special numbers will be rendered by Miss Corneille, and Mr. Jayne, assisted by the choir. Sunday school at 9:45 a.m. Francisco Garza, aged 29, got a marriage license on Monday, and named Isabel Carrera as his intended bride. He said she was 18. After the license was issued Garza said he was not certain he could get the girl, and he wanted Deputy County Clerk Burke to go with him to tell her father, Ramon Carrera, that the license was legal. Burke would not. Garza got Deputy Sheriff T. G. Cervantes to go. Garza showed Carrera the license and demanded the girl. Carrera said she was but 17, and should not wed just yet. The girl was there and said she was willing to be married to Garza. The latter pointed out to the father that the license proved that the girl was 19, but the father was obdurate. Garza and Isabel both declared they would be married just as soon as the girl was really of age. Carrera saw that in time he would be worsted, and he gave in. He said the wedding could take place in eight days, not sooner. Gerald Sandilands was on Tuesday evening elected secretary and manager of the reorganized Anaheim fruit association. He yesterday began shipping the last of this season's crop of Valencias. Mr. Sandilands is one of the most competent orange men in the business, having had wide experience, not only in the east, but in the East and West Indies. The association has done well in selecting him to manage their business, and there can be no doubt as to the final outcome of his labors. Success to him and the association. Signor C.
