Rimpau, one of the highly respected pioneers of this section, is past his 83d year, and makes the remarkable statement that he has not seen a day's sickness in sixty years. Mr. Rimpau in the early days was probably the most expert horseback rider in this section, and thought nothing of riding sixty or seventy miles a day. He frequently rode in to Los Angeles in the forenoon and returned in the afternoon. To this one fact he attributes no little of his sturdy constitution and excellent health. His is careful of his diet, and for many years has eschewed pies, cakes and sweetstuffs of all kinds. He was the father of fifteen children, and continues to enjoy the confidence and Fayette and Leland Lewis depart today for Berkeley, where the former enters upon his senior year in the law school, and takes up the no less responsible duties as captain of the varsity ball team. The latter will remain in the north for a month's visit with relatives and friends, and will return to take up his senior studies in the high school in September. Ben Kraemer has returned from a sojourn at Pine Crest, whither he went to obtain relief from a touch of asthma. The mountain air agreed with him and he was greatly relieved, but on reaching Rincon on the homeward journey felt the effects of the damp coast climate. He will probably soon make another trip to the interior for the restoration of his aforetime robust health. John Hanna holds the record of being the champion loser of watches in this section, having lost a dozen valuable timepieces since he began his record in the expensive art. Two weeks ago he lost an open-faced gold watch, which he thinks was stolen from his residence at Miraflores. Fifteen years ago, on returning to his New York hotel from a jam on the elevated railroad, he found his $50 gold watch had been taken from his pocket. He offered a reward of $100 for it, but failed to recover it. In San Francisco some years before his pockets were picked on Montgomery street. He never recovered one of his watches, and is now in the market for the purchase of another. Theo. When last heard from they were visiting friends in Vancouver and expected to start home in a few days, stopping off a day or two at Seattle. The Four Four Club was entertained Wednesday evening of last week by Mr. and Mrs. Fred Backs at their home on Hedwig street, progressive whist being the feature. The ladies' prize, a shirt waist pattern, was won by Mrs. Melrose, while the gentleman's prize, a fancy shirt, was captured by Fritz Yungbluth. Dainty refreshments were served. Bird Beebe will entertain the club next month at a beach party, probably given at Bay City. When Deputy County Recorder Halsted of Los Angeles saw the marriage certificate of William C. Flynn and Miss Anna M. Martens one day last week and discovered that the license had been used in Orange county, he immediately instituted proceedings that branded the union as illegal and caused a second wedding, in which Mrs. Flynn participated while ill in bed. Flynn secured a permit in Los Angeles, then came to this city, where the ceremony was performed by Rev. Ludwig G. Jacobs. When the latter filed his return the mistake was discovered. Flynn, when located later, said his wife was ill. Accordingly Rev. Jacobs was summoned and at the new home of the couple at 1522 West Twelfth street, Los Angeles, a second enactment of the nuptial service took place. Louis Ledger came down from Los Angeles on Thursday to attend Dr. Bailey's funeral. Lou, as he is familiarly called, is a brother of Mrs. Dr. Lloyd Bailey. He holds the position of adjuster between the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and the Santa Fe railroad company, his jurisdiction extending to Albuquerque on the east and San Francisco on the north. Himself a locomotive engineer, he holds the proud distinction of never having failed to bring the San Diego freight train in on Highway 61 high places when guest of relatives. He will be accompanied north by his wife and son, Ernest, who have been visiting here for several weeks past. Gordon B. Raymond and wife of Chicago were in town this week en route from New Orleans to Portland. They were guests of his brother-in-law, J. F. Ahlborn and family. Mr. Raymond is southern representative of the Raymond Concrete Pile company and is out on a business trip. Mr. and Mrs. Wm. McLauchlin have returned from a fortnight's auto tour as far south as San Diego, including a trip into Mexico. They went down by the coast route and returned by way of the interior, visiting Riverside on their way home. They traveled 450 miles and report a pleasant outing. The Merchants and Manufacturers' Association of Santa Ana has set apart Tuesday, August 17, as a day for visiting the canneries, mills and factories of the city. The reason for this tour is to impress the business men with the varied industries of the city; it will be an object lesson in home patronage. Residents of this section who have occasion to travel over the Olive bridge complain bitterly of the continual wretched condition of that structure. Several large holes are in the bridge and it is unsafe to drive a horse over the same, especially at night. It would seem that the country would make needed repairs. Carl Leonardt of Los Angeles has repaired the city's cement tank at the water works after six weeks later and an expenditure of $1500. He constructed a new cement coating up on the interior, and the tank is now impervious to leakage. Water was out of the tank six weeks and was turned in a few hours before the fire in J. Kruger's barn last week. Miss Louisa Paschall returned on Saturday evening from Seattle, after an absence of ten months, during which time she toured the country with a grand opera company, singing leading roles in Carmen and Faus Miss Paschall made a decisive hit upon the operatic stage, and after season of rest and recreation at home will rejoin the company for the fare and winter season. Himself a locomotive engineer, he holds the proud distinction of never having failed to bring the San Diego freight train in on time. He hits the high places when in the cab, and has a faculty of making up lost time which is the envy of his fellows. Some years ago two cholos boarded his engine at Ocean-side and refused to vacate the premises. His good right landed one of them in Honolulu, the other went flying over Smith mountain. M. L. Bellus, manager and secretary of the Orange County Gas company, with offices in this city, has sold his $20,000 interest in the company to D. L. Peters, president of the company. Mr. Peters is a resident of Los Angeles. About a year ago the owners of the gas company, operating in Anaheim and Fullerton, formed, with two or three Los Angeles capitalists, a large concern, which took over the Anaheim, Orange and Fullerton companies, merging them all. Improvements costing $25,000 have been made and business has rapidly increased under the new management Mr. Bellus has been requested to remain with the company, but it is stated he will locate elsewhere. His successor has not been appointed. It is reported that a majority of stock of the corporation may pass back into the hands of residents in this city. Loose alfalfa hay, $13.50 per ton delivered. Henry Wagner, 2 miles southeast of Anaheim. Clarence E. Willey, manager of the Huntington Inn, whose arrest caused such a sensation in Huntington Beach has temporarily disappeared from the local scene. He is largely indicted to a number of business houses there. Willey was last seen about midnight Sunday night by a representative of the owners of the inn who had been placed in charge. A great deal of pressure was brought to bear on Willey, urging him to plead guilty to the charges filed against him, so as to avoid further publicity at the trial. The Huntington Inn is for the present in charge of W. D. Seely, who presents the owners, and it will be kept open as usual. The Associated Chambers of Commerce of Orange county is to invade the Los Angeles Chamber of Commerce to tour Orange county. At meeting of the directors of the San Ana Chamber of Commerce a committee was appointed to further the movement. It is proposed to take the Los Angeles business men along the county shore line to Balboa, then back to Huntington Beach, and free that point over the new electric line through the celery and beet field past the New Southern California Gar Company's factory, to Santa Ana From there a side trip to Gard Grove is proposed. The block will be paved and completed for use in two weeks. C. J. Schultz and Theo. Cervantes captured three contraband Chinese at Santa Ana on Tuesday. The Chinese were almost exhausted from long tramping. They offered Schultz and Cervantes $400 to deliver them safely at the Chinese gardens. They evidently came from Mexico. They carried three loaves of bread and a canteen. They give the names of Ah Wah, Sing and Pung. They are being held in the county jail. Judgment by default will be entered in the action brought by J. G. Parsons against the stockholders of the Huntington Beach Canning and Pickling Company, with the exception of one stockholder, H. H. Lewis, who has appeared in the case. Parsons has brought suit as assignee for $20,000 indebtedness, that the smaller stockholders might be made to stand their pro rata of the debts. When the institution is cleared of its debts it will have a chance to go ahead with development. More Railroad Men carry Hamilton Watches Than all other kinds.
