I, John Hartung, Cashier of the above-named Subscribed and sworn to before me this 29th day of J [SEAL] RICHARD MELK HOW TO GROW YOUNG AGAIN SAVE DOCTOR BILLS BY REGULATION OF DIET Homely Advice: Concerning Habits of Eating and Drinking—Abstinence is Better than Medicine—Health In Grape Juice, Olive Oil and Fruits I suppose it is possible for any one who has reached the age of forty or fifty years to regain in a great measure the health and vitality enjoyed ten, fifteen or twenty years previously. Few, however, care to undertake the task by correct methods, as it means the renunciation of many pet dietetic sins, and the formation of new habits on a correct basis. Many would rather die than give up certain indulgences of the table. Yet no truth is better established than that disease in general has its foundation in wrong living, especially in wrong eating, which usually means in plain English, eating too much. Thousands of invalids seek the noted springs and spas, hoping to find tion of the entrance into the body of an excess of minerals and the stoppage of the manufacture of poisons and toxic elements within the system. The next point is the removal from the tissues of the accumulated waste and mineral deposits; in other words, the garbage which has collected through improper dietary habits should be removed. Cereals contain comparatively a large percentage of mineral elements; so those who seek to regain the suppleness of other days should eat sparingly or not at all of cereals. Meats contain uric acid, and other poisons and waste products of metabolism that exist in muscular tissues; all these assist in filling the human system with deleterious material; avoid meats if you would stay the hand of Father Time. In general, any food taken in excess of the amount needed to preserve the natural weight of the body is a clog and a detriment, producing poisonous elements, exhausting the vital forces, and inviting disease by weakening the resistant powers of the body. Hard water and mineral waters contain inorganic substances in solution which are no use in the body. Many would rather die than give up certain indulgences of the table. Yet no truth is better established than that disease in general has its foundation in wrong living, especially in wrong eating, which usually means in plain English, eating too much. Thousands of invalids seek the noted springs and spas, hoping to find health in some particular climate or locality; but health is not a matter of climate or mineral waters; it is simply a matter of proper care of the body, according to well established hygienic principles. A sick person is one who has violated some law of health; often the infirmities of old age are the results of a lifetime of wrong living. The body is loaded up with poisons and impurities, mainly earthy and calcareous salts, which have caused the tissue cells to ossify: a better term is "petrify." An old person, stiff, lame and decrepit, is simply a petrified person. The cells of the body should be composed mainly of non-mineral, jelly-like substances; instead, we find in the aged surplus of lime and other inorganic substances which sadly interfere with the functions of the body. In the course of a lifetime, the average person accumulates a large quantity of mineral waste and refuse in the muscles, arteries, veins and in the various tissues of the heart, liver, kidneys, brain, etc. When the deposition of mineral waste and garbage has reached a certain point death follows from petrifaction of the tissues. To bring about physical regeneration, the first requisite is the prevention with deleterious material; avoid meats if you would stay the hand of Father Time. In general, any food taken in excess of the amount needed to preserve the natural weight of the body is a clog and a detriment, producing poisonous elements, exhausting the vital forces, and inviting disease by weakening the resistant powers of the body. Hard water and mineral waters contain inorganic substances in solution which are of no use in the human economy; use soft water or distilled water, and use it plentifully—two or three quarts daily; if juicy fruits are used freely, not so much water is needed. An excess of starchy foods is injurious. After having cut off the supply of unnecessary minerals and reduced the food supply to proper proportions, there are several methods of eliminating the stored-up waste in the body. In passing it may be remarked that the necessary amount of minerals for the body can best be supplied by the use of green vegetables, nuts and fruits, which should be eaten raw or steamed. The following are some of the systems used to eliminate disease-producing refuse from the body: dry diet cure, fasting, milk cure, fresh fruit treatment, water drinking, raisin cure, internal baths, vapor baths, electric light baths, etc. California olive oil, unfermented grape juice, orange and lemon juice are also used with marked benefit. The quickest way to eliminate refuse and poisonous substances lodged in the tissues is to abstain from all food for a season, drinking water or fruit juices freely as one may be inclined. In fact, many, many bodily ills will The juice of this special health giving diets which are garbage deposited in the body. The "fruit fast" is recommended by Dr. Kellogg of Battle Creek, Michigan; he recommends the exclusive use of fresh fruits for a time. Copious water drinking is often used as a means of cleansing the system, as the large amount of water (which should be soft or distilled water) dissolves and carries out of the body the accumulations of uric acid, lime and other waste products. When this plan is used but little food should be eaten, or none at all. One of the most pleasant means of assisting the eliminating process is to commence operations in watermelon season and live exclusively on melons. The juice of the melons contains special health giving qualities and ingredients which assist in dissolving the garbage deposited in the byways of the body. In Europe a similar form of treatment is known as the "grape cure," in which the patient is fed exclusively on grapes. In this state the "grape cure" can be used to advantage in the fall; but the raisin cure or raisin treatment, can be tried at any time. To try this enough. Advertise it—simply tell the truth about it—and it will sell by the trainload at $1 per gallon. There are many brands of eastern grape juice on the market, but they are not to be mentioned in the same breath with California Zinfandel or Muscatel. Here is a latent industry, capable of being expanded into mammoth proportions, of which our vineyardists seem today ignorant. One more word: to regain health and to preserve it try this prescription: Come to California; enjoy our sunshine, breathe our air, live exclusively on our vegetables, nuts, olive oil, fruits, raisins, eat abundantly of our oranges, grapes, and melons; drink of our pure fruit juices; stop fretting and worrying; enjoy life and find happiness in every hour. CORR this 29th day of June, 1909. RICHARD MELROSE, Notary Public. To try this method of bodily recuperation, eat raisins exclusively for one or two weeks, masticating thoroughly; the benefits are more pronounced if unfermented grape juice is also used freely. And by the way, California grape juice is one of the most delicious as well as healthful beverages, and its universal use would go far towards preserving the national health. Unfermented grape juice will bring a much higher price than wine, and there is a world-wide market for it. Where one person uses wine, a hundred relish the natural juice. Here is a hint for our grape growers who are confronted with the serious problem of finding a market for their vineyard products. Let them manufacture unfermented grape juice and advertise it as the product of the modern fountain of youth. Grape juice is a fine remedy for rheumatism and blood diseases. The continued use of grape juice will cure more diseases than the combined drugs of the pharmacopoeia. Its health and vigor giving qualities make it an excellent substitute for the mythical Elixir of Life, the dream of the alchemist. If the life-giving, health-giving and beauty-giving qualities of our California grape juice were known, our vineyardists could not make it fast our pure fruit juices; stop fretting and worrying; enjoy life and find happiness in every hour. There is no charge for this prescription, but many have paid their specialists thousands of dollars for one not half so good. —Elmer Ellsworth Carey, in California Weekly. WILL NOT CHANGE NAME The Ebell Society of Santa Ana which has been active in its endeavor to have the name of Santingo Peak changed to Modjeska Peak, has received the following letter from Senator Frank P. Flint, who was asked to lend his aid in having the change made. The communication was directed to Hon. S. M. Davis, District Attorney of Orange County, who corresponded with the Senator: United States Senate. June 22, 1909. Dear Sir: Referring to your letter of June 10th, I beg to advise that I submitted the petition of the Ebell Society of Santa Ana to the U. S. Geographic Board, and they have informed me that after a careful consideration of the matter the Board unanimously declined to make the change, deeming it inadvisable to change a name which has long been established and is shown on all the detail maps of California. I regret that I have been unable to be of assistance to the Ebell Society in this matter. Yours truly, Frank P. Flint, Hon. Samuel M. Davis, District Attorney, Orange county, Santa Ana, California. THE BOHEMIA MINING DISTRICT OREGON The Bohemia mining district, in Lane and Douglas counties, Oreg., is described in a brief report by D. F. MacDonald that forms part of the United States Geological Survey's bulletin 380—"Contributions to economic geology, 1908, Part I." The district lies on Calapooya Mountain, in a region of bold relief and luxuriant vegetation—a region noted for its timber resources. The ore deposits are fissure veins that contain free gold, which have been developed by several mines.Mr MacDonald sketches the general geology, the ore deposits, and the mining development of the district, and includes notes on the mode of ore deposition. The report is included in an advance chapter of Bulletin 380 known as Bulletin 380-A, which may be had on application to the Director or of the Survey at Washington.
