STATISTICS OF POPULATION BASED UPON RETURNS OF THE SCHOOL CENSUS Anaheim Shows Up Well Among the Southern California Towns, Conservative Figures Shorn of Boom Attributes—Healthy Progress of South The Riverside Press has just completed its annual compilation of school census returns and a complete list of all the towns reporting 400 children or over (of school age, from 5 to 17) follows: A comparison is made with the report for 1908, except in two or three instances where those figures were not available: 1909 1908 Los Angeles 52,704 50,615 San Diego 6002 5622 Pasadena 5637 5262 Long Beach 3762 3841 Riverside 2981 2881 San Bernardino 2800 2562 Santa Barbara 2469 2447 Redlands 2306 2262 Pomona 2022 1876 Santa Monica 1847 1813 Santa Ana 1705 1652 Colton 975 798 San Pedro 935 977 Ontario 922 788 Whittier 862 841 Anaheim 848 739 Hollywood 822 748 Alhambra 798 730 South Pasadena 769 678 Ventura 766 710 Orange 728 736 Monrovia 705 652 Belvidere 694 .. Corona 671 610 Oxnard 608 591 are used. The ratio that existed in this State, the year the census was taken, was four to one. That is a conservative basis and is endorsed by the county bureau. In some cases, however, it is probably too low, and as his ratio as five may be all right for les having a considerable floatingulation. We have compiled these lowing figures, making use of ratios: Basis of Base 1 to 4 Los Angeles ...210,816 ...260 San Diego ...24,008 ...330 Pasadena ...22,548 ...230 Long Beach ...15,048 ... Glendale ... 463 ... 446 Ocean Park ... 433 ... 449 Covina ... 422 ... In general a good gain is made; among the cities which make a particularly good showing in this regard are Los Angeles, San Diego, Pasadena, Riverside, San Bernardino, Pomona, Colton, and Ontario. River-side's apparent gain is not so large as the real gain, in view of the fact that we lost 56 children by the exclusion of territory. The only cities reporting a loss are Long Beach, San Pedro, Ocean Park, Orange, Cahuenga and Needles. And the loss in the towns is so small that it can hardly be taken as an indication of arrested development. Long Beach, like Riverside, suffered quite a loss by the exclusion of territory. The total net gain of census children for these 37 towns is close to 4800—2100 in Los Angeles and 2700 in the other towns. That indicates a gain in population in these towns during the past year of from 20,000 to 25,000. And that is a striking proof of the fact that this favored part of the country is going steadily ahead. In estimating population from the school census returns, varying ratios Los Angeles, San Diego and other cities are claiming a larger population than is reached using the ratio of five to one; we regard this ratio as a maximum one and probably too high in cases—4 or 4.5 is much safer. fear that some of the cities that now making extravagant claims of population will be doomed toorous disappointment when the enumerators finish their work in 1910. While special features are being arranged for California Promotion Committee Day, the exposition offers many attractions out of the ordinary and the daily program includes airship flights, army and navy drills, military pageants and a host of attractions new to Exposition life. The big attendance on opening day and the following days of the first week augers well for the success of the fair. Seattle has been the first city to offer an exposition complete on the opening day and the fair has lived up to every promise made during the last two years. California has given the exposition one of the most handsome structures; one that is a credit to the state whose great resources it will serve to exploit. From the date of opening the California building has been the center of interest on the grounds and thousands of visitors have already inspected the exhibits so tastefully arranged in the big structure. The giant register in the California building is a source of interest and few persons who enter this building fail to affix their names to the biggest book ever printed. The exhibits of fruits, minerals and other resources of California are prominently in the foreground and the representatives in charge of the building have arranged a most effective display and one that is bound to exploit California in a manner never before attempted.
