The Weekly Gazette. ESTABLISHED 1870 Henry Kuchel, Editor and Proprietor SUBSCRIPTION.....$1.50 Per Year Six Months.....$1.00 Three Months.....50 Cts The Gazette is issued every Thursday morning. Entered at the Anaheim Postoffice as second-class matter. Has the Largest Circulation DESERVED ADVANCEMENT Neil Bailey has been appointed assistant superintendent of the Sonora division of the Cananea, Yaqui river and Pacific railroad, with headquarters at Nogales. Neil seems to be advancing in his profession along, and his recent promotion is one eminently fit to be made. While speaker of the lower house of the Arizona legislature he painted a lurid streak of red which stretched from Phoenix clear over to the Hassayampa river, and served a third term, escaping easily with several laps to spare from a band of vigilantes which surrounded the capital. He rides in a special, eats in a palatial dining-car, with liveried servants all about him. And gets a salary which should make Mr. Cipriano Castro turn green with envy. So long, Neil, folks all well; old hen got fourteen little chickens. Mr. Cipriano Castro considers, doubtless, that the saccharine uses of adversity are not all they are cracked up to be. Gov. So long, Neil, folks all well; old hen got fourteen little chickens. Gov. Sloane assumed the duties as governor of Arizona on Saturday, to which honorable position he was appointed by President Taft. He succeeds Gov. J. H. Kibbey, who resumes the practice of law at Phoenix. Gov. Sloane reappointed J. F. Cleaveland as private secretary, a position he held under Gov. Kibbey. Mr. Cleaveland a year ago in March was married to Miss Zelma Bailey, formerly a resident of this city. He is a well-known newspaper man of the territory, and was formerly a member of the upper house of the Arizona legislature. PARENT-TEACHERS A social meeting of the Parent-Teacher association was held Tuesday afternoon in Prof. Topel's room in the Central school building. A good deal of enthusiasm was displayed in the discussion on play grounds. A committee of ladies was appointed to look further into the matter of prices and other details before taking up the matter of the purchase of a piece of ground. It was the consensus of opinion that the block east of central school would make an ideal playground. The musical program presented by pupils of the primary and grammar schools, under the direction of Miss Ames, was excellent and showed careful and painstaking effort on the part of both pupils and teacher. A rising vote of thanks was tendered Miss Ames and the children by the association. The entertainment committee provided bountiful refreshment of punch, coffee and cake. The next meeting will be in September, after the summer vacation. During that month diamonds, pearls and other precious stones aggregating an appraised value of $2,318,242 were imported through New York. This is six times the quantity imported during the same month last year, and is more by nearly half a million than the value of the precious stones imported in April, 1907. In the same month 172 automobiles, appraised at $315,662, were imported, while in April 1908, there were only 71, valued at $181,496, brought in. The appraised value of all foreign merchandise entered last month was $78,725,064, or more than any one April in several years, and exceeding April 1908, by $23,000,000. Abstract Companies Close Their Offices Afternoon Saturdays Following the custom of abstract and title companies in all other counties in Southern California, and in view of the fact that the state laws render the public records inaccessible on Saturday afternoon, the Abstract companies in Santa Ana will hereafter close their places of business at noon each Saturday. IS A CORD NOT A CORD? contributed to The Gazette.] The farmer harvesting his small corn and to the man laying in the large fireplace of his house or seaside home; to the manufacturer buying pulpwood the proprietor of the ordinary bodyyard, to all of these men question has an important dollar-meaning. To say, and contrary to the most people, there are many when a cord is less than a hundred and many conditions when it is School arithmetics say that of wood is 128 cubic feet, or segments of a pile eight feet long, at high and four feet wide. It marketed on this basis. A case length, breadth and height together gives this numbic feet fills this requirement whether the sticks are short, straight or crooked, or split unless there is an unending to the contrary. Never a cord, though it comes up to measurements, is an uncertain even when the seller is honoring the buyer satisfied. Superman may have a tract of land which he sells to a paper company a cord, for as many cords he make. It is in the contract shall cut and stack it. He then 12-foot lengths, and when complete, it measures 200 feet and he receives $1000 for it. He have made or lost by cutout lengths instead of 12? Should have lost in the first on the additional labor requisition a 4-foot wood, but his principle would have resulted from diminished number of cubic SMELTZER A large number of influential Japanese celery growers held a meeting on Saturday at Wintersburg for the purpose of deciding the marketing question for the coming season. After a deliberation lasting over five hours it was unanimously agreed upon by all present to join forces with the Celery growers' association of Orange county. Before this conclusion was reached, a spirited debate took place in which several Japanese participated. An attempt by some outside shippers to obtain a foothold with them was frustrated, as was expected. The Japanese have undoubtedly become an important element in the production of celery in this county, and their success is mainly due to their loyalty to the association, and through which they always found a ready market for their crop, and in some instances aid in financing the raising of it. The outcome of their meeting demonstrated that they are fully alive to the situation, and their action will doubtless result in persuading the rest of their men to remain with the association, an organization from which they have always received square treatment. Representatives of the California vegetable union and the association were present and made addresses. H. S. Hazeltine, general superintendent of the union, gave a brief history of the celery industry in Orange county. W. E. Gerhart, for several years eastern representative of the association, made an instructive talk on the marketing proposition. A dividend from the California vegetable union, amounting to about $9000 has just been received by the make. It is in the contract shall cut and stack it. The 200 cords of 12-foot wood in 4-foot lengths, there would only 176 cords, and the should have received for it $880 of $1000. It was, therefore, his advantage to cut 12ths, but it would have been buyer's advantage to have it foot lengths. He would have the same actual quantity of $120 less. Makes considerable differneer seller whether wood is or sawed. If chopped, the lost. Where the logs are loss amounts to no small a cord of 4-foot wood, with nches in diameter, the chip from six to eight per cent; course, the shorter the sticks greater the loss. A dividend from the California vegetable union, amounting to about $9000 has just been received by the association for distribution among the growers. This is the fund that was withheld from the various pools for the settlement of probable losses. Trouble from this source, however, has to a large extent been eliminated the past season, hence the return of this money. APPRAISING PROPERTY The committee selected by President Dobson of the Santa Ana chamber of commerce to appraise a list of property in Orange county for the state board of equalization, expects to begin its work next week. The appraisements will be used by the state board as a means of comparison with the figures on the books of the county assessor to be used as a criterion to determine whether or not the rates in Orange county are up to the standard set in other Southern California counties. The appraisement committee will be given a list of between 250 and 300 pieces of property scattered all over the county. Representatives from each body of the associated chambers of commerce of Orange county will be called upon to give assistance concerning values in the different localities. On the appraisement committee are D. H. Thomas, chairman; C. S. Forgy, Frank Ey, G. W. Minter and John Cubbon.
