A twenty-acre orange grove that was owned by W. R. Carpenter, who while county superintendent of school ran away with Mrs. Fannie French, and died in Idaho while there with her, has been sold by Carpenter's window, Mrs. M. A. Carpenter of Long Beach, as administratrix of his estate, to Frank Dowling for $20,000. The property lies near Fullerton, and the sale, for which an order of court was granted, includes 20 shares of water stock.
Assemblyman Melrose attended a banquet tendered the Los Angeles legislative delegation by the national guard at the Jonathan club in Los Angeles on Saturday evening. The affair was recognition of the passage of a bill appropriating $100,000 for the erection of an armory building in that city. Brig.-Gen Wankowski, Col. Schrleber and other military notables were present, besides the Los Angeles delegation, with the exception of Speaker Stanton, who is ill of pneumonia at a Los Angeles hospital. Mr. Melrose was included among the guests for his earnest advocacy of the bill, and during the evening made a lengthy address upon the national guard and its influence for good in the community.
E. W. McCollum and Billy are back from a several-day Tulare. They intend in the future to move thither and their residence.
