WHO FOR JUDGE?
It is not a bit too early for Southern California to put on her thinking cap, and figure whom she wants for member of the state supreme bench.
There are to be two vacancies to be filled by the election next year, the terms of Judges Sloss and Melvin expiring January, 1911. It is conceded that one of the judgeships will come to Southern California, owing to the growth, not alone in population, but in legal business.
There are seven members of the supreme bench and the only one who hails from south of the Tehachapi is Justice Shaw. From whatever viewpoint the matter may be regarded, Southern California is entitled to not less than three members of the bench.
Not only that, but our varied and peculiar interests demand, in opinion of the Express, increased representation.
Our vast oil interests, to say nothing of the water problems, are such as to demand special knowledge and familiarity with local conditions. The judges who have grown up about San Francisco, and who spend their time there, cannot be expected to be sufficiently informed with the problems that affect the southland to do justice to the south.
Southern California demands, and the north appears willing to acquiesce, that one of the judgeships to be vacated shall be filled by a southern man. There will not be another chance until 1915, hence the opportunity must not be permitted to slip by.

But taking it for granted that the north will not contest our right the pertinent question remains Who shall be chosen for the bench?
