A PROSPEROUS NURSERYMAN
Theo. Ford was in town on Tuesday from his nurseries near the river south of town. Mr. Ford ended the shipping season yesterday by forwarding 1000 walnut trees to Hemet. He has shipped several thousand walnut trees to the upper valley this season, and the year has been in every respect a prosperous one.
"The year has been one of the best I ever saw in California," said Mr. Ford. "The country never looked better, and sufficient rain has fallen to insure good crops. The walnut business has been good, despite the fact that many are going in for oranges. But the limited area adapted to walnut culture will tell in the long run. Orange county will produce half the nuts grown in the country in the near future, and besides this county there is only a small coast strip where these trees will do well. Orange culture is spreading out, while the walnut area is restricted. Of course a good orange grove is as good as a gold mine, but when the walnut growers perfect their new organization and do away with the large sums hitherto annexed by brokers, you will see the industry hum."

BIRTHDAY PARTY
Oswald Fulde celebrated his fifty-seventh birthday on Wednesday of last week, when a number of friends gathered at his hospitable home on Lemon street to felicitate him upon the happy event. Games were play- ed, social converse indulged in and a bounteous spread provided. Late in the evening the voice of serenaders was heard without, and on investi-gation it was found that a quartet of male voices were in the front yard adding to the joyousness of the occasion. The singers were invited in and joined in the reveling until a late hour. Mr. and Mrs. Fulde prov-ed themselves hospitable hosts, and when the guests departed it was with the expressed wish they would be there again on Mr. Fulde's next birthday.
San Francisco, March 29.—Reports from Bishop, Inyo county, California, indicate that porcupines are seriously damaging the lodge-pole pine forests of the eastern slope of the Sierras. Practically the entire area of the Inyo national forest has been affected to some extent. In many localities the damaged trees aggregate as high as 25 percent of the total stand. While these areas are not large, it is evident that if something is not done to curb the attack, much of the timber will be killed.
The porcupine feeds to a large ex-tent during the winter months upon the inner bark of the pine. To secure this he travels about upon the snow and completely girdles the trees just above the snow line. Of course, this results in the death of the tree. The damage would not be so serious but for the fact that the porcupine seldom makes two meals off of the same tree, but prefers to visit several trees in the course of a night. Since its habits are nocturnal, hunting this animal is very difficult. The attention of the Forest Service has been called to the ravages of these animals, and plans for their extermination are under consideration.

San Francisco, March 27.—Lee Kim, a young Chinese merchant, wealthy and possessed of some education and more than ordinary intelligence, was ordered deported by the Immigration Commissioner today, because of facts revealed when he came into court to testify in behalf of his friend, Yum Kee, who faced a similar fate. It was shown that Lee Kim had known the defendant all his life. Surprised at the suddenness of the attack Kim admitted that he had not complied with immigration regulations, and was ordered deported.
Since the close of the Civil war in 1865, there has been paid in pensions the sum of $3,654,653,365, and the cost of maintaining pension agencies and administration of the pension bureau has been $112,852,547.
In 1902 there were 999,446 pensioners on the roll at an expense of $137,504,267. Since that time the number has decreased to 951,687, but owing to the passage of the McCumber age law and the Sulloway widows' law, the appropriations to pay pensions increased $153,093,062 for the last year.
It is estimated that 60,000 pensioners died during the last year. It is estimated that within ten years the pension roll will not carry over $75,000,000 or $80,000,000, unless additional legislation should be enacted.

The bill provides for the purchase of six steamers at the average price of $300,000 each.

WICKERSHEIM IMP'T CO., Fullerton — California
J. Francis Burton Harrison of New York, in a speech on the tariff, declared against an increase of duty on lemons, declaring that it was local legislation and designed solely to benefit local California growers by making consumers of the Atlantic seaboard pay the freight from California when they might otherwise get cheaper fruit from Italy. Smith of California asked if it were not a fact that oranges, under protective duty, had become cheapened to the consumer. Harrison begged the question, but maintained his hostility to the lemon tariff.
Present plans seem to be to have a vote taken on half a dozen of the big schedules, including lumber, hides, wool, ore, coal and perhaps barley, and then put the bill to vote. It is predicted now that lumber will lose even the dollar given it by the Payne bill, but the lumber interests are looking to the senate to put the tariff back to $2. Needham and McKinlay are both to speak on the tariff bill Monday.
