WILL MAKE UNIFORM RATE CITY TRUSTEES CONSIDERING A SCHEDULE OF POWER PRICES Application of Walnut Association For Reduced Rate for Lighting Warehouse Under Advisement—New Cement Work Ordered—Sidewalks Constructed by Private Contract The board of city trustees met in regular session on Thursday evening; present, Stock, Gates and Fiscus; absent, Rust and Kroeger. Superintendent of Streets Steadman reported cement curbs and sidewalks constructed on Broadway in front of the public library, on South Los Angeles street in front of power house, also fronting railroad property north of power-house. Finance committee reported approval of demands against the city amounting to $243.41. Public Improvements committee reported that a cement sidewalk should be constructed leading to the power-house entrance. Fiscus of the special committee appointed to investigate the rates for light furnished the walnut growers' association, reported he favored a reduction and quoted rates of Edison company, used by orange growers' association of Fullerton. A discussion followed whether or not to give the walnut growers' association lower rates. The matter went over for further investigation. Petitions of Wm. Gerdes, August Staehnke, J. C. Zimmerman, D. Gervais, Peter Wohlgemuth and Conrad Stueckle, requesting permission to construct cement curb in front of their property on South Los Angeles street by private contract; granted, provided work was done before city let contract for work already on hand. Engineer Steward submitted a diagram of cement curbs on South Los Angeles street, both sides, from Santa Ana to South. The same were adapted and placed on file. It's up to the grocery man to deliver eggs that are fresh, in as well as in theory. No more dling of hen fruit of questionable cestry or disputable age. So McCartney's bill to give the baker a cinch on the grocer has made a law, and sixty days after it will be in full force and effect here is what the new law provides for: "Food and liquor shall be ed mislabeled or misbranded if an imitation of or offered for under the distinctive name of an er article of food. or if it be la or branded or colored so as to receive or mislead or tend to de or mislead the purchaser. "If in package form, the con must be plainly and correctly ed on the outside of the packa weight and measure. CHAMBER OF COMMERCE BANQUET The Fullerton chamber of comm held its annual banquet on Friday night, the attendance being the best in the history of the associ Counting the invited guests over Petitions of Wm. The same were adopted and placed on file. Resolution of Intention No. 82, ordering construction of cement curb on Los Angeles street, between Santa Ana and Broad streets, was adopted. It will be found in another column. A letter received from Assemblyman Melrose in reference to Assembly bill 272, relating to powers of city trustees to levy licenses, was read. The letter was published in these columns last week. Bond of the Associated oil company, which was recently awarded contract for furnishing city 1500 barrels of road oil, was approved. Stock & Backs requested a duplicate warrant on treasury, issued to them October 8, 1908, amounting to $12.20, the original having been lost. The same was ordered issued. Building permits were granted as follows: Keith Rush, $300 frame building on Olive street. Mrs. Matilda E. Schulz, $500 alteration on frame building on Philadelphia street. Attorney Spencer reported that Mrs. Schumacher would deed city a strip of land for widening W. Center west of Citron, provided city would pay for removing a cement ditch. Laid over for investigation. A six-foot cement sidewalk was ordered constructed leading to the city power-house. Trustee Gates reported that Palace Market wanted their electric fan placed on power meter, and the same was granted. The board discussed the propriety of establishing a uniform rate for all users of power. The same was taken under consideration, and at the next meeting the board expects to adopt a schedule of rates. REFORESTATION MEASURES Senate Bill 1054, by Senator Willis, will have a companion in the assembly by Mr. Melrose. At the present writing the assembly bill has not been introduced, consequently its number cannot be given. This bill aims to perpetuate the valuable species of forest trees on cutover land CHAMBER OF COMMERCE BANQUET The Fullerton chamber of commerce held its annual banquet on Friday night, the attendance being the lowest in the history of the association. Counting the invited guests over people were present, including aegation of boosters from Anaconda. The toasts were as follows: Chamber of Commerce, C. C. Man; Boosting for Fullerton, A. L. Vincent; The City Beauty Miss Daisy Swerdfegery Munroe Progress, D. J. Harrigan; The Law Prof. D. Brunton; Our Streets Roads, A. I. Stewart. E. S. Man, president of the chamber, toastmaster and Shriver's orchard furnished the music. Eleven tunes were killed for the banquet. SUCCESSFUL FUMIGATION The board of horticultural consultants recommends to all farmers of orange and lemon trees they use the Woglum dose, which composed of one ounce of cyanine one ounce of sulphuric acid and no ounces of water for every 100 feet of space beneath the fumigation. This prescription was put by the government expert, after several months of testing. Woglum says the gas produced for the crop named will not only kill the bugs but will kill the eggs of all pests except the Mealy bug and white scale, which are too well-treated for the gas to penetrate Woglum proposes having tents erected on the outside so that theators can tell exactly the air beneath the canvas. Reports to commissioners say scale in this city is on the decrease, owing to persistent fight. DEFIES THE CITY Frank Thompson has defied city of Santa Ana to stop him building a blacksmith shop on Fourth street. He has a permit which was issued to him by the living inspector through a misuse of the city ordinance. Has been notified by the truth that it is illegal. He says he build anyhow. Residents of the trict are talking of bringing an junction suit to stop him. Should build, the city can keep him conducting a smithy, as none can do it. REFORESTATION MEASURES Senate Bill 1054, by Senator Willis, will have a companion in the assembly by Mr. Melrose. At the present writing the assembly bill has not been introduced, consequently its number cannot be given. This bill aims to perpetuate the valuable species of forest trees on cutover land by requiring those who conduct lumbering operations to leave five trees per acre to serve as seed trees. The bill is fathered by the Tri-counties Reforestation Committee of Riverside. It was first suggested by resolution of the national irrigation congress at its meeting in Sacramento, 1907. Since that time the state of Maine has submitted to the supreme court the question as to whether such a bill would be constitutional and has received an unanimous answer in the affirmative. It is clear that it will be incumbent upon the state to take action in this direction at no distant date and it would seem nothing more than good business to begin now before the virgin forests are irreparably damaged. OLIVE RANCH TRADED By a deal in which $80,000 is said to be involved, the Crookshank ranch, belonging to S. E. Este, near Olive, was traded for a wheat ranch in Osbourn county, Kansas, belonging to Clifford Stanfield of that place. The deal was made through the agency of the real-estate firm of Schaffert & Littlefield. The Crookshank ranch is a fine 45-acre place, twenty acres of which are in Valencia oranges and the remainder in full-bearing walnuts. The Kansas property consists of 840 acres of the finest wheat land. Mr. Stanfield took possession of his ranch the first of March. Frank Thompson has defied city of Santa Ana to stop him building a blacksmith shop on Fourth street. He has a permit which was issued to him by the building inspector through a misuse standing of the city ordinance. Has been notified by the truth that it is illegal. He says he build anyhow. Residents of the trict are talking of bringing an junction suit to stop him. Should build, the city can keep him conducting a smithy, as none can run outside the fire limits with a special permit from the trust Thompson has laid a foundation than a foot from a dwelling. HUNTINGTON BEACH Huntington Beach. March 1.—special meeting held Wednesday morning the trustees decided to add liquor ordinance similar to that in force at Riverside. The city shall was elected poundmaster his salary fixed at $40 a month fees as poundmaster, that of the clerk at $15 a month and that the treasurer at $5 a month. City attorney will be paid $20 month. Many ranchers in the peatland have determined to plant a large reage this year in asparagus. believed that this will furnish an ing crop. A lodge of Daughters of Rebecca will be organized here the event of March 2, and will be visited the state president and a deputy who will conduct the work. A petition to the supervisor being circulated at Garden Cottage and signed by nearly all the families to whom it is pre-ceded.
