A TRIBUTE TO THE MARTYR LIFE AND CHARACTER OF ABRAHAM LINCOLN Address by L. A. West at Memorial Exercises Friday Evening — The Railsplitter, Rising from Obscurity, to the Seat of the Mighty No one who heard the address upon the Life and Character of Lincoln, delivered by the Hon. L. A. West of Santa Ana at the opera-house on Friday evening, can have failed to appreciate more highly the fame as well as the patriotic services rendered the nation by Abraham Lincoln. Mr. West is probably the foremost public speaker in Orange county, and he never spoke to better advantage than when dealing with the subject which appeals to his heart, as it does to every American. His eloquent words are in part as follows: There’s a name that brings a picture Of a man great souled and grand; One whose deeds on history’s pages, Carved in bold relief shall stand. There’s a name that brings a picture Of a time when blood was shed; When the boom of cannon sounded, And the star of war was red. There’s a name that brings a picture Of a shackled race set free; Brought from out the ban of bondage To the joys of liberty. Tis the name of martyred Lincoln Calls these pictures from the past; And that name with the Immortals, Shall live while earth shall last. Call the roll of the great from the fields of his native Kentucky; Call it from the prairies of Illinois; Call it at the fireside of the humble and the poor and of the people that preserved the nation; and of the shackled race set free, for the answer, to whose name is greatest in the affections of all the people in the whole history of this nation and the response from the depths of their grateful hearts is the name of Abra- And that name with the immortals, Shall live while earth shall last. Call the roll of the great from the fields of his native Kentucky; Call it from the prairies of Illinois; Call it at the fireside of the humble and the poor and of the people that preserved the nation; and of the shackled race set free, for the answer, to whose name is greatest in the affections of all the people in the whole history of this nation and the response from the depths of their grateful hearts is the name of Abraham Lincoln. Greatest name written on the pages of American history; greatest because of the hardships, privations, poverty and disappointments over which he rose to eminence and distinction; because his life is a demonstration of the possibilities and opportunities of our Western Civilization, and an exemplification of the wisdom and liberality of our republican institutions. Mark well what I say in the because for I would not disparage the revered name of our great Washington—between whom and Lincoln there is a distinction as broad as distinct; the distinction between him who from the forest and factory takes timber and steel and builds a vessel, and launches her upon the highways of the nations, trims her sails and mans her, and sets his captains over her crew, places chart and compass in their hands and starts her on her voyage; and the same vessel has sailed on many years but now there is mutiny in the crew; the waters become troubled and the vessel is drifting far from her destination and into strange currents, the name of the designer and builder is almost forgotten and the vessel is nearing dangerous reefs and the wild winds and mad waves are bearing her toward the rocks and sure wreck; when from out the fog and the storm appears the tall form of the pilot with troubled face, brawny arm and calloused hand, but cool headed and clear eyed and he boards that vessel and with the same chart and compass carries her into the harbor and anchors her there in perpetual safety with the chains of Liberty and Union, now and forever, one and inseparable. A generation has seen and coming generations will never forget the spectacle of the rail splitter and the flatboatman passing from the scenes of poverty, obscurity and melancholy to the seat of the mighty, and wringing from adversity, an exalted name to all posterity. Can you conceive of Monarchical Europe with its refinement and etiquette, or sceptered Asia tolerating the awkward form and simple manners of Lincoln on a throne—Lincoln who now has secure a place in history as the most exalted of the earth. There is something in Lincoln with all its adventures by him in a large than by any of our nationalers. Sympathy. It is pro-Stanton or Seward or Chase of the other great and so devoted characters of the world have accomplished the sea that Lincoln achieved. I believe, for the instrument that sen was taken from the living day and from among men advanced in culture learn many ways superior in the where culture creates sad but they were not chosen comes in the power, the power that moves in a way its wonders to perform of calm as well as storm. Here also comes in the invincible logic of these debates and in summary this declaration that slavery that the national sin can be atoned in national suffering for every drop of blood task masters lash shall be one shed by the sword. I cannot get away from thought of the Divinity, to city in which he trusted as whom he so often converses lines of Shakespeare "The Divinity that shapes our enew them as we may." Wendell Phillips says, "He whom responsibility educates showed himself more and more equal to duty as year added and laid on him fresh God given and God led and ed we must ever believe he is exactly my view of the expresses it to my satisfaction often hunt for expressions by our best estimation of a new looking over the field of a new temporaries we find in this tion of the co-laborer or ourary the correct estimation whom we admire or censure. History is retrospection, mighty difficult to say when everyone is talking about us today. But if history trespassion and review of those us travel in our minds eye find look at the struggles for liberty. That which has impressed stamped upon the memory world in indelible character struggle of the weak age strong for the rights that creative mind and the print truth everywhere is embraced one word Liberty. How was generations will never forget the spec tacle of the rail splitter and the flatboatman passing from the scenes of poverty, obscurity and melancholy to the seat of the mighty, and wringing from adversity, an exalted name to all posterity. Can you conceive of Monarchical Europe with its refinement and etiquette, or sceptered Asia tolerating the awkward form and simple manners of Lincoln on a throne—Lincoln who now has secure a place in history as the most exalted of the earth. Born in Kentucky on a farm upon the edge of the frontier in a log cabin, we see him with his restless father in his earliest youth, upon the highway of the rolling stone, wending their way to Indiana; thence to the prairies of Illinois; we then mark in passing the stations of farm hand and railsplitter, flatboatman, country merchant, disciple of Blackstone, soldier and captain in the Black Hawk war, home again, candidate for the legislature of his adopted state, defeated, then his election and faithful and yet not striking service for a number of years, back to the law office and the disputations of a rural community, thence a seat in congress, home again, the law office and the circuit; in the political arena with Douglass and gaining of national fame and throwing away against the advice of friends a seat in the senate as we now believe for the hope of the presidency, his nomination and election to the chief magistracy of the nation; steps as familiar to the school boy of today and as real to them as it is possible for history to portray the great character of him who traveled this highway from obscurity to glory. Where the school in which Abraham Lincoln was educated and where had wisdom her seat of learning? "God moves in a mysterious way, His wonders to perform," and the answer of Lincoln alone will suffice. "I am but God's humble instrument." How comforting the thought and how seemingly true it is that in that which has impressed stamped upon the memory world in indelible character struggle of the weak age strong for the rights that creative mind and the print truth everywhere is embraced one word Liberty. How warmed. It is but the same story that has been ringing through the countless ages gle and suffering have means to the end whether or municipality. It is not that it is so for outside of religious liberty what else greater or more desirable? We session counts for aught with Do any sensible, scholarly question that Abraham Lincoln ed the lists of the champion cause of Liberty for any sense? The language of Edward Tucker to a sneering courtier is unto that defamation, "Honorable y pense." Strange how history records how simple it is when we go to the philosophy of it. It is dream of the old Hindo that the vast and varied races of it led out to their fortune he saw men bitted and cured the reins went back to an irony But his dream changed on an ill at last he saw men led that went back to an unseen reins that came from the book. Now let us look at this other standpoint. We have through history that men in at one time took no prisoner all the battles were under the flag, then the scene changed on until the captives were on then we saw it change again Roman amphitheater and theatorial contests and the making the conquered fight and peril that has come to tion through some unmistakeprovidence at the signal hour at the helm of state a man ent unto the hour. It was true days of the building of the narue with Washington and the continentals, in their ragged details, Yielding Not." It has true since his and that day. True when stars were about to ring from the flag, but the form of the prairie lawyer rose in the fields of Illinois and his soul to the task held here and their enlarged field released number and the additon of liberty to four million peels marks the life work an death of him who was but humble instrument." Mons make men, occasions rough God, make men His instruments. It has been of all ages, countries and Men have arisen from obscugreatness by the demand of Our Lincoln is not alone option. The pages of history date with the examples of dedo duty, that through its atsuffering brought fame to and liberty to the people— bought for the consideration and suffering and retained the Warranty of Eternal Vigwas the case of the Italian Garibaldi, who "desiring to and unify Italy went before of young men and appealed its. What are your inducethey asked. "Poverty, hardtles, wounds and victory," the hero. And the Italians this enthusiasm and enlisted spot and the world knows it. is something in the life of with all its adversities posby him in a larger degree any of our national characmpathy. It is probable that or Seward or Chase or some other great and strong and characters of the day might complished the same thing colon achieved. I say proba- each other for the entertainment of voluptous Rome. Again the scene changes and we saw the amazing spectacle of the Dutch ship at Jamestown, and the grafting into the nation the seeds of that institution that brought forth the emancipation. It seems to me that the declaration as written by Jefferson was finished by the hand of Lincoln. The nation through him and his proclamation was given a new birth of freedom. Let us look at it from another view. I say, and without fear of successful contradiction from either history or historian that the great seals up on the escutcheon of liberty as put forth in formal declarations and in living pieces of literature that will stand as long as the English language has been, are not in number more than you can count upon the fingers of one hand. Yes, they are less. Merchant of Venice DATE Students of the high present "The Merchant to Date" at the opera-day evening. The play of Shakespeare's master filled with numerous lustions. It is probable that or Seward or Chase or some other great and strong and characters of the day might complished the same thing Lincoln achieved. I say probabie the instrument that was choctaken from the living of that from among men who were in culture learning and in ways superior in the things culture creates superiority, we were not chosen. Also comes in the power of invisible logic of the Douglass and in summary the prophetation that slavery is sin and national sin can only be national suffering and that drop of blood shed by试者 lash shall be repaid by by the sword. Not get away from the of the Divinity, the Divinich he trusted and about so often conversed in the Shakespeare "There's a that shapes our ends, Rough as we may." Philips says, "He was one responsibility educated, and he himself more and more near to duty as year after year laid on him fresh burdens and God led and sustainust ever believe him." This is my view of the man and it to my satisfaction. We set for expressions to satisfist estimation of a man when over the field of a man's cones we find in the estimate the co-laborer or contempor correct estimation of him admire or censure. Is retrospection, and it is difficult to say anything anyone is talking and admirlday. But if history be re-read and review of the past let us our minds eye for awhile that the struggles of people which has impressed upon the memory of the indefelible characters is the of the weak against the rights that in God's mind and the principles of anywhere is embraced in the Liberty. How was it gain but the same story repeats been ringing down the countless ages. Struggling have been the end whether in nationality. It is not wondrous also for outside of civil and liberty what else is there more desirable? What possents for aught without it? sensible, scholarly people that Abraham Lincoln enters of the champions in the Liberty for any selfish purgeage of Edward the Third. Ring courtier is sufficient defamation, "Honi soit qui se." How history records and he it is when we get down philosophy of it. It was the old Hindo that he saw and varied races of humanit to their fortunes. First men bitted and curbed and went back to an iron hand. Team changed on and on until he saw men led by reins back to an unseen hand, came from the brain. We look at this from an endpoint. We have seen history that men in warfare took no prisoners, that tities were under the black scene changed on and the captives were enslaved, saw it change again to the phitheater and the gladiators and the conqueror conquered fight with Immortal Proclamation. There was a terrible silence. They knew that the words he was about to read, would on the morrow be flashed around the world, the lightning stroke of the divine hope to enslaved humanity, a flame, a torch, to all the people—a new declaration of independence, a new America. Hence, forth, the world would be a step nearer the divine—one step nearer God. Lincoln had become the great liberator. They never forgot his face as it was that moment—America looking through his eyes, speaking through his lips: "On the first day of January, in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and sixty-three all persons held as slaves in any state then in rebellion against the United States shall be then, henceforth and forever free." Such is a brief history of this document as given us by James Oppenheim. When Abraham Lincoln signed that document he was then and thenceforward the controlling stockholder in the corporation of humanity. The wireless telephone is coming.
