Billy Kretschmer underwent the novel experience some nights ago of being held up by two masked high-waymen as he was about to enter his home at Hollywood, just before midnight. Billy plays the slide trombone in a Los Angeles orchestra, and returns to Hollywood each evening after the performance. He was nearing his home when two men wearing masks leaped from behind a hedge and ordered him to throw up his hands. They placed a gattling gun at his head and Billy complied with their polite request. The robbers took $5 from Billy's pockets, but returned his watch at his request, as it was an heirloom in the family.
Rev. Dr. Miller who is temporarily filling the Methodist pulpit during the enforced absence of Rev. Moore, because of illness, is from Connecticut, although much of his time has in recent years been spent in Iowa. Dr. Miller spends his winters with his wife in Southern California, and it was while sojourning in Los Angeles that he accepted the call to come here temporarily. He is a pulpit expounder of grace and force and is just now delivering a series of Sunday-evening sermons to the young. On Sunday evening he told his hearers how it is all off with a young man who starts in to gamble. Mrs. Miller is a sister to Congressman Hill of the Fourth Connecticut district, who has been prominently mentioned for United States senator from his state. He has represented the district twelve years, and has transformed it from a democratic stronghold to an old-fashioned republican district, polling about 14,000 majority.
