FREE RAW SUGAR
In another column will be found a timely article upon the Menace of Free Sugar. The article is by a well-known resident of Los Alamitos, and is called out by recent utterances of Claus Spreckels and other sugar refiners before the ways and means committee at Washington. Mr. Spreckels, it seems, favors the introduction, duty free, of raw foreign sugars, but strenuously opposes free refined sugar. His position is clear, and leaves nothing to be desired by those thirsting for information. Mr. Speckels wants free raw sugar, because he will be enabled to pocket the duty, and free raw sugar does not come into competition with him; but he is tooth and nail against the importation of refined sugar duty free, because that comes actively into competition with him! Thus the millionaire refiner cares not a rap for the interests of the American farmer, who will be ruined by the importation of free raw sugar; but is careful to guard his own business interests with a jealous eye. Great is the tariff, when the very act itself is sought to be amended so. If raw

Thus the millionaire refiner cares not a rap for the interests of the American farmer, who will be ruined by the importation of free raw sugar; but is careful to guard his own business interests with a jealous eye. Great is the tariff, when the very act itself is sought to be amended so. If raw sugar is to be admitted free, refined sugar should be also. The article should be perused carefully by our readers.
MASQUERADE BALL
Sixty couples attended the masquerade ball given at the opera-house on Tuesday evening. The first lady's prize, a piece of cut glass, was awarded Mrs. Abbott of Olinda, who represented The Queen.
The second lady's prize, a gold bracelet, was awarded Miss Mabel Gade, in the character of a Japanese girl.
The gentleman's first prize, a watch fob, was won by Fred Conrad who represented George Washington.
The gentleman's second prize, a gold stickpin, was awarded Roy Firebaugh, who represented a Chinaman.
Excellent music was furnished and an enjoyable time participated in.
Daniel T. Hindman, president of the First National bank of Britton, South Daokta, was in town Tuesday, and expressed himself as being pleased with the climate of Southern California and the surroundings of this city. Mr. Hindman is spending the winter in Los Angeles, and will probably be in this city again in a few days.
Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence and little daughter visited relatives in town this week, from Cochise, A.T. They went to Pasadena yesterday, and will later go to Reno, where they expect to take up their future residence.
Alfred and Oscar Heying returned last evening from San Francisco to spend Christmas with their parents.

AROUND THE WORLD
Robert Hellmich, a German, who
makes the claim that he is riding
around the world on a bicycle, was
in town yesterday, having come down
from Los Angeles to see the town.
Hellmich says he started with two
others, one an American and the
other an Austrian, from New York
July 14th, on a run to Paris. The
American is now in Seattle, and Hellmich claims to be 12 days ahead of him. The Austrian was last heard of in Omaha.
Hellmich returned to Los Angeles
in the evening. He says he will pass through Anaheim at 10 o'clock on Sunday morning on his way to San Diego. There he proposes to strike for the City of Mexico, and thence on to Central and South America. His course takes him by steamer to Japan, where he resumes his ride,
and crossing the Japan sea he will head through Manchuria for St. Petersburg,B erlin and Paris.
A Berlin club offers three prizes of $2500 to the three men making the journey.
Hellmich says he will ride 21,000 miles and be 15 months on the road. He is a young fellow of polite habit who speaks English imperfectly, but had no difficulty in making known his purpose to girdle the world on his wheel.
"You've got nerve," said a by-stander. A large crowd collected to converse with him.
