STATE CAPITAL REMOVAL The following letter from the alumni association of the University of California will be found self-explanatory: Berkeley, Nov. 20, '08. Editor Gazette.—May we ask you to publish the following statement of facts in your paper in order to help us to correct an erroneous impression that has been created in connection with the recent capital removal project? The alumni association of the university of California, consisting of the graduates of the university and of the affiliated colleges, through its council, adopted the following resolutions: "Whereas, circulars were distributed throughout the state by the promoters of the attempt to remove the state capital to Berkeley, with the following heading, 'University of California Alumni Capital Removal Committee, Berkeley, California,' and "Whereas, this caption conveyed the impression that the letters were issued by the alumni association of the university of California; and "Whereas, this circular had no official sanction whatsoever from the alumni association or its officers; therefore, be it "Resolved, that the council of the alumni association regrets that the name of the university and the alumni were used in connection with the capital removal, and deprecates such use in connection with any other political measure not officially authorized. Land Tribune, a well known Pacific organ, favors Knight pointment and says, "Mr. assumed friendliness for co would count for nothing; be powerless to give their advantage." The Pacific Mail under Mr. Harriman, has given California and the Panama any reasonable shipping rail facilities with the eastern Panama. Because of this government of the United States poses to put on a line of its own between Pacific ports and Panama, just as been compelled to do between York and Panama. These government ships, the oneation, the other to be in are under the control of the navy. It would queer spectacle to see lines competing, under the of Mr. Harriman's attorney, retary of the navy, with man's Pacific Mail steamship pany and Mr. Harriman's Pacific. Such a condition intolerable and ought to besible. Instead of being to give them any advantage Harriman's attorney, as seen the navy, could be a millstone the neck of California and nugatory any attempt of th ment to aid California ship their attempts to free them from the transportation's "ocean sea" in the person of Knight, as national comm as chairman of state conven delegate to national conven "Resolved, that the council of the alumni association regrets that the name of the university and the alumni were used in connection with the capital removal, and deprecates such use in connection with any other political measure not officially authorized. George Edwards, Pres. The alumni association, as the general organization of all of the university's graduates, to whom she should be able to look for unselfish devotion, has been working for and still advocates certain definite objects believed to be of prime importance not only to the university but to the state at large, namely, the protection of the university from any diminution of income as a result of change in state taxation; a liberal appropriation by the legislature for the erection of a suitable building for the college of agriculture on the university grounds in order that the agricultural interests of the state may be more amply served by fuller opportunity for education and research; increased appropriations for the express purpose of increasing the salaries of instructors, not only up to a fair living scale, but also that we may be able to compete with other universities in keeping the teaching force up to standard; and appropriate legislation which shall make the president of the alumni association a member of the board of regents of the university so that the association can better live up to its purpose of service to the university. Kistler, Proprietor According to a recent estimate, there are in the United States more than two million miles of public roads but not more than ten per cent of these are held as improved. If all of these two millions of mileage were properly and permanently constructed and kept in good shape the estimated saving to farmers and to the public generally would equal two hundred and sixty millions annually. If our country roads were the really excellent thoroughfares that they are in England, France and Germany, there would be less need of railroad extensions. The railroads would then gladly send out freight automobiles to collect produce and passengers, thus greatly reducing the cost and labor to farmers and doing more than President Roosevelt's commission to bring about the millennial agricultural condition that he probably has in imagination.
