DEVELOP WESTERN FORESTS
STATIONS TO BE ESTABLISHED UPON RESERVES
Model Forests to Be Maintained as Object Lessons for Public—Reproduction of Valuable Yellow Pine
Forest experiment stations will soon be established in a number of the national forests of the west according to plans which have just been completed by the United States forest service. These new stations are expected to do the same for the development of American forests as agricultural experiment stations have done for the improvement of the country's farms.
As a first step in this work an experiment station has already been established on the Coconino national forest in the southwest, with headquarters at Flagstaff, Arizona. Stations in other national forests will be established later and it is the intention ultimately to have at least one experiment station in each of the silvicultural regions of the west.
One of the most important parts of the work of the new experiment stations will be the maintenance of model forests typical of the region. These areas will furnish the most valuable and instructive object lessons for the public in general, for professional foresters, lumbermen, and owners of forest land, and especially to the technical and administrative officers of the national forests.
In the recently established station on the Coconino national forest one of the first problems to be taken ledge of American silviculture, the indirect benefits of the forest and will deal particularly with problems of particular importance to the regions in which they are located.
While work of this character new in this country, it is not out precedent abroad. The vast systematic organization of best research work was officially organized in Germany in 1870, the first forest experiment station was established in Baden, in connection with the Polytechikum at ruhe. Half a dozen of the states followed the example, including main experiment stations in nection with forest schools and ches in various forest districts, work done is intensely scientific, the policy of forest experiments is steadily growing in fact.
In India, where after half a century of administration the state forest is hardly better than the United States at present, work of research has been wholly neglected, and the result apparent in the poor progress technical forestry. Very lately ever, the need has been recognized by the government, and an Imforest research institute and has been created at Dehra Duo a faculty chosen from the Imforest service.

stations will be the maintenance of model forests typical of the region. These areas will furnish the most valuable and instructive object lessons for the public in general, for professional foresters, lumbermen, and owners of forest land, and especially to the technical and administrative officers of the national forests.
In the recently established station on the Coconino national forest one of the first problems to be taken up will be the study of the reproduction of western yellow pine and the causes of its success and failure. A solution of this problem of how to obtain satisfactory reproduction of the yellow pine is of the greatest practical importance to the southwest, since the yellow pine, which is by far the most valuable tree there, is in many cases not forming a satisfactory second growth. The study will be carried on largely by means of sample plots, which will be laid out for future observation to determine the effects of grazing, of the different methods of cutting and disposing of the brush and of other factors on the success of reproduction.
Other studies which will be taken up soon are a study of the light requirements of different species of different altitudes and the construction of a scale of tolerance which will be based on the actual measurements of the light intensity, and not only, as has hitherto been the case, on general observations alone; the taking of meteorological observations to determine the effect of the forest upon temperature, humidity, melting of snow, wind velocity, etc.; a study of the relative value of the germinating power of seeds from trees of different sizes ages, and degrees of health; and similar studies of value to the region. A complete collection of the flora of the forest will be made to form a herbarium, which will be kept on the forest and will be available for reference at any time.
These stations will carry on scientific experiments and studies which will lead to a full and exact know-

EARLY INDIAN LANGUAGE
Eighty-nine different Indian dogs have been recorded for permanent preservation in the last seven years by the experts of the University California in the course of theirological and Archaeological surveys of California. Twenty-two of these dialects have been studied more accurately than the remainder view to ascertain their geographical structure, which is in most not as rude or even entirely lax as is commonly imagined, but has been created at Dehra Duplex faculty chosen from the Inland forest service.
In the United States consider research work has already been in connection with forest protection but the chief trouble so far has been the lack of persistence and patience which has characterized work, and failure frequently tends all the factors which are involved. The new system provides the permanent assignment in an en region of specially trained who will have an opportunity to come thoroughly familiar with region, and the work will then conducted with the greatestiveness and least expense.
The work will be not only difficult in character, but will also extremely practical, and will allow every case to solve problems most important to the lumberman, forester, and people whole. Valuable results will undoubtedly be obtained in this way were not possible under the old tem of general observation.

Very lately, howed has been recognized achievement, and an Imperial such institute and college existed at Dehra Dun with chosen from the Imperial United States considerable work has already been done with forest problems, trouble so far has been persistence and permanence has characterized the failure frequently to conceive factors which are new system provides for each family the dialects show similarity, but as between the families no relationship or similarity has yet become apparent. The greatest problem of aboriginal history in California is the explanation of the origin of the tribes speaking these many dissimilar and unconnected languages.

NATIONAL BISON RANGE
The bison range in the Flathead Indian Reservation in Montana, to establish which Congress at its last session appropriated $40,000, has been selected. The location of the range is the one recommended by Prof. Marion J. Elrod, of the University of Montana, after he had carefully examined several parts of the country. It lies directly north of the Jocko River near the towns of Ravalli and Jocko. Approximately 12,800 acres are embraced in the tract, which will be fenced in a substantial manner under the direction of the Engineering department of the United States Forest Service.
Of the $40,000 appropriated only $10,000 will be available for fencing the range and constructing the shelt-

Of the $40,000 appropriated only $10,000 will be available for fencing the range and constructing the shelter sheds and other buildings necessary for the proper maintenance and care of the bison. The remaining $30,000 will be paid to the owners of the land, many of whom are Indians. Funds for the purchase of bison are being raised under the auspices of the American Bison Society, which was largely instrumental in securing the appropriation.
The first person to spend actual money in the effort to preserve the American bison from total extinction was the late Austin Corbin, who many years ago fenced some 6,000 acres at Blue Mountain Park, New Hampshire, and secured a herd of bison. The Corbin herd became in course of time the inspiration of the national movement which is now furthered by the American Bison Society. This society, of which President Roosevelt is honorary president, and William F. Hornaday, director of the New York Zoological Park, is president, was founded in 1904, and the Montana bison range is directly the results of its efforts.
Details of the management of the herd in the new national bison range will be worked out as soon as the herd is purchased, when the construction work on fences and buildings will also be begun.
