TO HELP JACK TAR AFLOAT
WORLD'S WORKERS GATHER FOR SAILOR'S BETTERMENT
First International Congress in History to Study Seafaring Problems — American Society Calls Representatives From Many Lands.
New York, Sept. 17.— Travelling fifty thousand miles for over three thousand hours, representatives from a dozen nations are today bound for this city to plan organized help for the sailor on every sea of the globe. For the first time in history an international conference in the interest of millions of men who live on the ocean has been called by the American Seamen's Friend Society, and from almost every country in the world delegates are hurrying here to be present at the gathering on October 4th. America will be represented by authorities on the interests of the seamen from more than a dozen of the society's branch stations in the leading ports on both coasts.
To outline and propose remedies for the problems with which the great international body of seafarers is faced on every shore of the world today is the object of this unique congress. The world-wide ways of the crimp, the boarding master, the shipping agent and ship owner will be discussed by men who have made a life long study throughout the globe of these vital elements in the life of jack-ashore. The treatment of jack-les in the navies of the nations as well as the merchant marine will come up for consideration. Efforts of agriculture for regular systematic study of agriculture and for agricultural practice and young men who are main at the farm for two years. The work is planned for the very large number of subjects and the science directly thereto. This cannot fulfill the requirement trance to college, since it is to furnish a technical agriculture to those who felt that they desired or to pursue a college course.
The course of study for year will be: English 5 periods, Arithmetic 3 periods, Soils Botany and Plant Propagation 2 periods, Dairying 7 periods and Farm Practices as offers.

today is the object of this unique congress. The world-wide ways of the crimp, the boarding master, the shipping agent and ship owner will be discussed by men who have made a life long study throughout the globe of these vital elements in the life of jack-ashore. The treatment of jackles in the navies of the nations as well as the merchant marine will come up for consideration. Efforts will also be made to perfect the organization by which the American Seamen's Friend society is aiming to keep in touch with the shifting body of sailors through their forty-five stations all over the world.
From Great Britain E. W.Matthews, secretary of the British and foreign sailors society of London, is on his way to give the conference the benefit of his investigations in a tour of the globe which he has just completed. The problems of the sailor man in Mediterranean ports will be reported by T. J. Irving, who is bound for New York from Naples, where he has for years been an active worker for stranded seamen. Chaplain Wollesen of the society's station at Copenhagen has arrived in this city and will be followed by other leading workers in the ports of Germany, Holland and Sweden.
From the Western Hemisphere veteran workers for the American seamen's friend society from Montreal down to Buenos Ayres are already embarked on their long journey to the American conference. Tucker, who has succeeded a long line of striken workers at the branch in Rio de Janiero, which for seventy-four years the society has battled to maintain against the ravages of yellow fever, is to report on conditions surrounding jack-ashore in South America today. Another experienced worker in Argentine has begun the long voyage from Buenos Ayres. Reports will also be received from the other South American stations of the society at Valparaiso, Montevideo, and Rosario.

FARMERS' SHORT COURSES
Instruction In Practical Agriculture at State Farm at Davis
The college of agriculture of the University of California has favored us with an illustrated circular calling attention to the preparations of the university to meet the needs of the many men and women who will go to the farm to attend the short courses in agriculture, and to give details regarding the School of Agriculture to open in January, for boys of fifteen years of age or over. The first point is presented largely through illustrations, all of which have been taken upon the Farm and show farming operations and implements and the work of constructing a few of the many buildings which will be needed as the institution grows.
The short courses are primarily for farmers—for busy men and women who want to know more about their everyday problems, but who can not spend as much time away from home as when they were boys, or as much as they plan for their sons to spend in an agricultural school. Any one who is seventeen years of age or over and desires to learn will be welcomed.
Opportunity is offered in the school
Agriculture for regular and systematic study of agriculture subjects in agricultural practice to boys young men who are able to re-enter the farm for two or three years. The work is planned especially for the very large number who do better fit themselves for occupation of farming. In the field of agriculture the student pursue essential academic subjects in high school, such as English mathematics, but devotes most of his time to agricultural science and the sciences relating to thereto. This course does not fulfill the requirements for enrolment to college, since its object is to furnish a technical training in agriculture to those who have not yet desired or were able to take a college course.
Course of study for the first year will be: English 5 periods, Arithmetic 3 periods, Soils 7 periods, Plant Propagation 9 per-daying 7 periods per week, Farm Practices as opportunity candidates for admission to the course of agriculture must be at least 2 years of age and must be of character and good behavior. Candidates thus qualified will be admitted without examination upon pre-requisition to a diploma of graduation any grammar school (eighth of the state). Candidates who do not hold a gram-mount certificate, but who sub-recommendation from their teacher or their superintendent, will be admitted upon satisfactorily an examination in Arithmetic, United States Geography covering the work done in the grammar course. The examination for the course provides dormitories for as many as possible of the young men attending the school of agriculture, but owing to the unavoidable delay in beginning the building which is now being constructed, no announcement of accommodations for the coming year can be made at the time of writing.
Calendar, School of Agriculture, 1909.—Entrance examinations and registration, Tuesday, January 5; Instruction begins, Wednesday, January 6; Washington's Birthday, Monday, February 22; Recess of one week, Saturday, March 27—Monday, April 5; First term ends, Friday, May 28.
LARGE REALTY DEAL
An extensive exchange of real estate was made on Thursday when deeds were filed from Jacob Stern of Fullerton to M. A. Newmark and Herman W. Frank of Los Angeles, to a big tract of land near Olinda in the Rancho San Juan Cajon de Santa Ana, and a mortgage against the property for thirty thousand dollars also recorded.
The tract contains somewhere about two thousand acres and has been acquired piece by piece by Stern until the holding has grown to its present proportions. According to the documents filed, Herman W. Frank acquires a fourth interest and M. A. Newmark one three-eighths interest, the balance of the whole being retained by Stern himself, and all of the property is subject to the thirty thousand dollar mortgage. The land is directly on the line of the electric road running to La Habra and will be very valuable, and the supposition is that perhaps the money raised on it is to be used in acquiring more property in the immediate vicinity. The mortgage is given to the Southern Trust company of Los Angeles.
