WALTER JOHNSON WINS PRAISE Washington Paper Prints Glowing Account of His Steel Arm Walter Johnson seems to be going some in the big league His work has been phenomenal, and he is freely referred to as the greatest pitcher in the business. The Washington Post of recent date prints Johnson's photograph and a picture of the lad while in the act of delivering a ball. Johnson seems to be the whole thing in baseball at the national capital, for he won the Post prize offered the most popular member of the team. Speaking of Johnson's second consecutive victory over Philadelphia, the paper says: Yesterday's victory was Walter Johnson's fifth straight, and these games have been pitched in eight playing days, a record unprecedented in baseball, and which proves Johnson to be a pitcher with a steel arm. Years ago Joe McGinnity was named the "Iron Man," because he pitched several double-headers during a season, but McGinnity's display of stamina is nothing compared to that of Johnson. Just who Manager Cantillon would pitch yesterday was a matter of conjecture until a few minutes before the game. Cantillon looked his pitchers over in the morning, and there was hardly a man among them who did not have a complaint of some kind which would incapacitate him from working. When the warming-up period came before the game, Cantillon sent Charley Smith out to warm up. One glance at Smith's motion was enough to convince the local manager that Smith would not do, yet he would NATIONS IMPORT IN Plays Prominent Part in between World Pow Few people have theception just how important timber and unmanufactured in the trade between the nations, and doubtless it many to learn that their portations of the various amount to $285,600,000. Cantillon looked his pitchers over in the morning, and there was hardly a man among them who did not have a complaint of some kind which would incapacitate him from working. When the warming-up period came before the game, Cantillon sent Charley Smith out to warm up. One glance at Smith's motion was enough to convince the local manager that Smith would not do, yet he would probably have pitched him, because he was virtually forced to do it. When Smith warmed up Walter Johnson picked up a ball, gave Mike Kahoe a wink, and the pair strolled down to the clubhouse. "Let me try my arm, Mike," said Johnson, and he began to warm up. After he had pitched about ten minutes Johnson remarked, "Well, she is better than she was yesterday," and slowly meandered to the players' bench. When the preliminary practice was over Cantillon said to Smith: "Well, Charley, I'll have to ask you to go in, sore arm and all. We haven't any one else." "I tried my arm out, Joe, and she feels pretty strong," put in Johnson. "Well, Walter, if you think you can work, it will be a big favor to me and the other pitchers," explained Cantillon. "Well, I'll tackle her," drawled Johnson, and picking up his mitt, walked to the pitchers' position. Johnson was much more effective than on the day before, and but for Delehanty's fumble of Barry's grounder would have allowed the visitors but a single run. Under the circumstances it would have been a hard game for Johnson to lose. He was fast and had control, giving but one pass and striking out nine men. That Johnson is unquestionably one of the greatest pitchers the game has ever produced has been proved within the last two weeks. MATIONS IMPORT LUMBER Prominent Part in Trade Between World Powers People have the slightest concern just how important a part and unmanufactured wood play trade between the world's great cities, and doubtless it is news to learn that the lumber imports of the various countries at to $285,600,000. This is according to estimates for the whole compiled by Dr. Ernest Friedland of the German commercial high seat Leipzig. Withstanding the fact that it owns its own supply dwindling, the United States furnishes about 20 per cent of the lumber imported by other states. Austria-Hungary furnishes per cent, Russia 16 per cent, Japan 13 per cent, Sweden 18 per Finland 10 per cent, and Norway Roumania a small quantity. The countries importing wood are on the highest economical which were themselves in earnest densely wooded, but whose have been denuded to a great-less extent to make room for nature and other industries, says Consul James L. A. Burrell of Bourg, in a report to this government. Only 4 per cent of the city of Great Britain is covered forests, and during the year 1906 country imported to the value $561,750. Germany has still 26 per cent of its territory covered by land, but imported in 1906 lumber at $61,285,000. INGERSOLL AT THE TOMB OF NAPOLEON A little while ago I stood by the grave of the old Napoleon, a magnificent tomb of gilt and gold, fit almost for a deity dead—and gazed upon the sarcophagus of rare and nameless marble, where rests at last the ashes of that restless man. I leaned over the balustrade and thought about the career of the greatest soldier of the modern world. I saw him walking upon the banks of the Seine contemplating suicide. I saw him at Toulon. I saw him putting down the mob in the streets of Paris. I saw him at the head of the army in Italy. I saw him crossing the bridge at Lodi with the tricolor in his hand. I saw him in Egypt, in the shadows of the pyramids. I saw him conquer the Alps and mingle the eagles of France with the eagles of the crags. I saw him at Marengo, at Ulm, and at Austerlitz. I saw him in Russia, when the infantry of the snow and the cavalry of the wild blast scattered his legions like winter's withered leaves. I saw him at Leipzig in defeat and disaster—driven by a million bayonets back upon Paris— Only 4 per cent of the country is covered forests, and during the year 1906 country imported to the value $1,561,750. Does these countries, those lying on the dry western side sub-tropical zone lacking force forced to import wood. Egypt is wood and coal to the value at $16,660,000 annually; Algeria Spain, Portugal (with only 3 percent forest land), Italy, Greece 50 per cent forest land)the east part of Asia, British South Africa the western part of Chile and the Argentine Republic and Australia all poor in wood, are dependent import. I saw him at Leipzig in defeat and disaster—driven by a million bayonets back upon Paris—clutched like a wild beast—banished at Elba. I saw him escape and retake an empire by the force of his genius. I saw him upon the frightful field of Waterloo, where chance and fate combined to wreck the fortunes of their former king. And I saw him at St. Helena, with his hands crossed behind him, gazing out upon the sad and solemn sea. I thought of the widows and orphans he had made, of the tears that had been shed for his glory, and of the only woman who ever loved him, pushed from his heart by the cold hand of ambition. And I said I would rather have been a French peasant and worn wooden shoes; I would rather have lived in a hut with a vine growing over the door, and the grapes growing purple in the amorous kisses of the autumn sun; I would rather have been the poor peasant, with my wife by my side knitting as the day died out of the sky, with my children upon my knees and their arms about me; I would rather have been this man and gone down to the tongueless silence of the dreamless dust than to have been that imperial personification of force and murder known as Napoleon the Great.
