PETTY THEIVES Mr. Crone of the folding-crate company reports the loss of $8 which was taken from his clothing at the factory on South Lemon street on Friday. He noticed three boys hanging about the premises, two white boys and a Mexican. One of them occupied himself in turning on and off the water at a faucet, while the two others entered a room where the men's clothing was hanging and made away with the money. Mr. Crone ordered the boy at the water faucet to leave the premises, when the others ran from the adjoining room and all made off together. The loss was not discovered until some hours later. In the evening, Mr. Crone on returning to his home on Olive street found a wire window screen cut. Neighbors saw the three boys loafing about the back yard during the afternoon. The boys are charged with other acts of malicious mischief, and are well on their way to the reform school. Officers have descriptions of them and arrests will probably follow. HELMSEN GETS DIVORCE CASE IN COURT GOES AGAINST WIFE BY DEFAULT Testimony Offered by Plaintiff and Other Witnesses—A Compromise Reacehd Before Trial Joseph Helmsen secured an interlocutary decree of divorce from his wife, Mrs. Christina Vogler Helmsen, on Tuesday in the superior court. Judge Densmore of Riverside presided. The case went against defendant by default, she failing to appear and not being represented by counsel. A compromise in the suit was affected on Friday, when after a lengthy conference between the parties to the suit plaintiff agreed to pay defendant $2000, and she relinquishes all claims upon him in the future. When the case was called Mr. Helmsen was on hand with his attorney, Victor Montgomery, and a number of witnesses. Judge Densmore was surprised defendant was not in court nor represented by counsel. “Is there another train due from Anaheim soon?” he inquired. Judge Densmore was surprised defendant was not in court nor represented by counsel. "Is there another train due from Anaheim soon?" he inquired. On being informed there would be no other train from this city until the middle of the afternoon, he ordered the case to proceed. Plaintiff took the stand in his own behalf and testified to facts contained in his original complaint filed in March. For a number of months previous to that time his wife had refused cohabitation, and had in various ways made life unhappy for him. O. Lagman testified as to the character of the residence plaintiff built for his wife, the same costing, furnished, $6500. E. W. McCollum, the laundry man, testified of plaintiff's cleanly linen, and Mrs. Kluss, his landlady, said he was the cleanest lodger in her house. These witnesses refuted defendant's allegations as to uncleanliness on the part of plaintiff. Mrs. Cadman testified regarding defendant's notions of procreation, which conform to Mrs. Eddy's belief. At conclusion of the testimony Judge Densmore ordered an interlocutary decree of divorce to enter as prayed for. It is understood Mrs. Helmsen agrees to vacate the residence on Claudina street in thirty days. Mr. Helmsen will return to take up his residence there, he having left his home in March on instituting proceedings against his wife for divorce. Alexander Henry, an old-time walnut grower of West Anaheim, believe the crop will be fully 35 per cent larger in well-cared for groves than it was last year, and says there will be less blight this season than in ten years. Mr. Henry has been growing walnuts for thirty-five years and thinks the fungus that has been troubling the growers for eight or ten years is only a climatic disease which is rapidly passing away. He has made a special study of the disease for some time and finds that the walnut districts of France had the same affliction about twenty-five years ago and that it passed away ten years after its first appearance. Mr. Henry also states the disease was slow in making its appearance in the California groves and that irrigation had nothing to do with bringing it on. He finds that trees in heavy soil are more free from the blight than those in light soil. He has no faith in grafting, because he believes the disease must wear itself out.
