Chandos Cited to Appear The Pacific telephone and telegraph company, formerly the Sunset has been cited to appear before the Santa Ana board of equalization to show cause why the assessment on its franchise should not be raised from $750 to $1000 per mile as it was last year. The company has never taken out a franchise from the city of Santa Ana. The Home company turns in 2 percent of its gross earnings to the city treasury on its granted franchise. To equalize the two companies' taxes the Santa Ana trustees last year fixed the Home franchise assessment at $500 per mile and the Pacific at $1000. The Pacific brought suit against that city which matter is still in litigation. City Assessor R. L. Freeman reduced the Pacific assessment to $750 per mile, and the board of equalization proposes to return to $1000. The Pacific company has thirty-five miles of poles and wires in Santa Ana. Engine Starts Fire Fire started by sparks from a freight engine on the Santa Fe burned over 150 acres of grass and stubble on the Munger lease four miles south of El Toro on Friday and destroyed between 350 and 400 sacks of barley. Ranchers turned cut and helped get the fire under control. Call and see our refrigerators at Nagel's.
