END OF GUMSHOE POLITICS Republicans of Orange County Initiate Movement for Primary Law—Largely Attended Meeting Held at Santa Ana Endorses the Plan—Petitions Out Republicans of Orange county on Wednesday evening last at Santa Ana initiated a movement for the inclusion of the county in the districts now under provisions of the State primary law. No primaries were held in this county August 11, the date for holding such elections in other counties of the State, although a meeting of nearly 1000 indignant Republicans, in meeting assembled at Santa Ana a month ago, made formal demand upon the county committee that such primaries be called. This demand was ignored by the chairman of the committee, who held that such procedure would be "illegal." Subsequently a meeting of the committee was called, upon initiative of members who desired primaries, but they were outvoted by those members who take orders from the machine, and the list of appointed delegates held their places. A resolution calling upon them to resign was voted down by the committee, which is under control of the political machine now ruling the state. Republicans throughout the county at once took up the matter of providing a primary law for this county and last week's meeting was the direct result of this a gitation. H. H. Hale of Placentia, was chairman of the meeting and J. P. Baum circulation, and vote for the November election Board will be submitted to vote election. P. Baumgartner of Santa Ana, served as secretary. On motion of E. E. Keech a resolution was adopted expressing the sense of the meeting as follows: Resolved, that we declare ourselves in favor of a direct primary law and will work to bring about the enactment of such a law, and as the first step in that direction, that we now inaugurate a campaign to secure the compulsory application in Orange county of the present primary law. The essential differences between the present State primary law and the proposed primary law amendment to be voted upon in November, was pointed out by Mr. Keech, Mr. Baumgartner and other speakers. In brief the present primary law provides for the election of delegates to county and State and district conventions. This is the plan hitherto pursued in the county until the county committee, working under the instructions issued by the railroad machine in Los Angeles, which was fearful of the result of an open prio to the state and district conventions. The primary law amendment to be voted upon in November provides for voting for candidates for office direct at primaries. However, if this amendment be carried at the Novem ment must be subsequently adopted by the Legislature and thus the beneficial efforts of the law may be deferred for years. The amendment should be voted for of course, but voters should also sign petitions now in The board of trustees regular session on Thursday present, Trustees Rust, Ger, Stock and Fiscus.
