Death of J. F. W. Fesenfeld
A letter from Herman Fesenfeld brings news of the death of his father, formerly a well-known citizen of Anaheim, at Grays Harbor, Washington, July 17. The Washingtonian of that city in its issue of the 18th contains the following brief biographical sketch of deceased:
Johann Frederick Wilhelm Fesenfeld, for many years a prominent business man of this city, succumbed shortly before noon yesterday to heart failure, following a long illness: The end was not unexpected, for on the previous day Mr. Fesenfeld's condition had been grave. Members of the family were summoned to the bedside and prepared for the worst.
Heart failure first attacked the deceased about two years ago. Of strong constitution, Mr. Fesenfeld stood up under the attack, but other strokes followed. For the past year he had been in poor health, and of late had been quite ill. The family physician, Dr. A. J. McIntyre, had no hope for the recovery of the patient from the latest attack, and at noon yesterday Mr. Fesenfeld passed peacefully away.
Mr. Fesenfeld was born in Oldenburg, North Germany, April 25, 1836, and was therefore 72 years of age. In 1859 at the age of 23, he left Germany and went to Australia, and two years later at Melbourne, was married to Miss Sarah Fenn. In 1869, with his family he returned to Germany from Australia, remaining two years. Then the family came to America, locating at Chicago. In 1873 the family came west to California, and in 1882 continued north to Washington, settling in Tacoma. In 1889 Mr. and Mrs. Fesenfeld and children came to Hoquiam, which has since been their home.
Mr. Fesenfeld engaged in business here, and for many years was one of Hoquiam's most progressive citizens. He was widely known and generally respected, and his death has been a source of great sorrow to all those who knew him. He is survived by Mrs. Fesenfeld, five daughters and one son.

International Irrigation Congress
Elwood Mead, formerly chief of the irrigation investigation in the department of agriculture, and now chairman of the state rivers and water supply commission of Victoria, Australia, is urging the holding of an international congress of irrigation and water conservation. This he urged should be held in the city of Melbourne and gives as his reason that Australia, and especially Victoria, is far ahead of the United States, and most other countries in its irrigation laws. On the other hand, he admits that American irrigation engineers are better qualified than those of any other section of the world.
Mr. Mead's idea is that the bringing of the bright men of America and other sections where irrigation has become almost perfect in its engineering problems together in the country where irrigation laws have become almost perfectly administered, will be a great advantage to all.
Country's Fuel Supply
The fuel-testing plant of the United States geological survey, at Denver, Colo., one of the factors in the conservation of the coal supply of the country, will resume operations the latter part of July. At this point the government is endeavoring to obtain greater efficiency from the coals of the Rocky Mountain fields by washing and coking them. Many of the coals of the west contain such quantities of impurities—ash and sulphur—that they are not of much value for commercial use. It has been the government's purpose to wash the impurities out of these coals so that they can be utilized. The chief handicap to commencement. With the finest minous and anthracite world located in the eastern country, it has been felt in some instances could not manufacturing. The result the government have done dispel this idea and the way going forward at a rapid further developments upon the completion of the year. The Denver plant of A. W. Belden, assist Delamater. Judgment for $500 has Miss Georgia Maganety in court against the Pacific way for damages received the collision at Slauson June 19. The railway omitted the carelessness of and judgment was entered company. The judgment

Many of the coals of the west contain such quantities of impurities—ash and sulphur—that they are not of much value for commercial use. It has been the government's purpose to wash the impurities out of these coals so that they can be utilized. The success already obtained warrants a continuation of this work. During the last fiscal year, ninety tests of coals were made at the Denver plant, resulting in many of them being decidedly improved.
Of thirty seven western coals tested at the Denver plant all but three produced good coke though a number of them were considered as non-coking. The importance of this is seen when the immensity of the smelting business of the west is realized and the therefore enormous demand for coke.
Several of these coals without washing have failed to make coke fit for metallurgical purposes owing to the large amount of sulphur in them. Other coals would not even make steam without the washing process.
It is likely that the final results of these tests will add millions of dollars to the fuel values of the west. It has already been shown that a number of coals that in the past have not been mined because of their impurities, can now be profitably utilized. This will extend the life of the fuel supply and make possible vast industrial enterprises in the west that would not locate there had the government not taken this step.
The lack of knowledge of the nature of the coals of the west has been its
